Pepper & Carrot, Episode 39: "The Tavern" is finally out!
This 11-page webcomic is a standalone episode that you can read in five minutes. It's about courage and an experiment with sound in the comic medium. Translations are already available. We've got English, Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文, Nynorsk, and Toki Pona, thanks to some great contributors. And a big thank you to my 1106 supporters for giving me the time to create this one.
Official homepage of Pepper&Carrot, a free(libre) and open-source webcomic about Pepper, a young witch and her cat, Carrot. They live in a fantasy universe of potions, magic, and creatures.
These are for one thing great tidings. But I do have a small, insignificant issue with the message. Because do you know who the supporters are, who are giving you the time to create this? It is us 108 people on Liberapay, who don’t pay you like 2€ per comic, but a weekly amount, not tied to any delivery of content. Who are paying you an average total of maye 90€ per week. For the time since the last release you should have gotten some around 10000€ from liberapay supporters. I myself (as your highest weekly public supporter on Liberapay) have been supporting you with 816€ (minus 5.95€ in bank fees) since the last chapter. And even the ones who don’t support you with 8€ a week, but maybe just 25¢/week have in this time supported you with some ~33€.
But we don’t get mentioned in the credits lists or anything (at least I don’t, cannot talk about the others). And that is fine. We are not doing this for acknowledgement. We are doing this because we want to support the idea. But it also feels a bit weird that even som

@lazy Hey Tina, first, thank you. 💜 I can assure that making the credits took me 5h, and all the Liberapay supporters were written in the top level to reflect the amount of donation they sent me and my gratitude for that.
But I also respect privacy: the donation on Liberapay are by default set to 'private' afaik, and can be set to 'public'. I display only this ones. It's written on my page since the beginning. liberapay.com/davidrevoy/ So, please check your privacy settings on your account.

It looks like we have a bug here at Liberapay level, because I kept the raw csv table they provided in my admin area, and for sure I couldn't find your id/name on it (and I get the name of "private", but I can't see the "secret" , the cells are empty, another privacy mode I forget to mention in my previous message). I exported a cvs from the period of 2023/04 to now; to be sure to also mention the supporters not active now, but who were during this period. 1/2

Hey! Thanks for looking at it, and yes, I also did the double check too, I still had the raw csv file of yesterday, and foudn the same result as you. I then concluded that I made a mistake while copying the table to my text file. Maybe a bad range selection on Libreoffice calc. Mea culpa, my fault :) I tried to write it later on the discussion here (Edit: No, I forgot to write that publicly here, so now it is. It was in PM because revealed private info). Thank you for Liberapay!

@rival 😻 Thank you! Even if I felt he had a very passive role in this episode, but I had to do that because the duo Pepper VS Cayenne is taking all the room. I'm working right now on rewriting my script of the future episode 40 to give him a little bit more influence on the events.

The BBC can do debates when there is genuinely an unclear issue. When there is an expert giving their opinion, there should be no opportunity for challenge from a loudmouthed simpleton from Tufton Street, or other propaganda factory du jour.
As for the problem of who decides what is factual, ensure the BBC can be sued pro bono, and let the courts decide what is true, as usual.

@ShadSterling German native speaker here and let me tell you that "raus" in no context means "free". In the context of this cartoon it's short for "get out of here NOW!" Maybe with some more exclamation marks. @Natasha_Jay
I gave up on the BBC a long time ago. Not even the World Service is worthy my attention anymore.
I cannot believe that the public service broadcaster of my youth has turned into yet another news service fawning to the extreme right-wing concept of "balance" in reporting.
The cartoon clearly illustrates how that kind of "balance" works in practice.

@the_wub I got furious about their "balance" regarding the environment in the 1990s... then completely gave up on the BBC because of their "balanace" around the Brexit referendum.

Hab heute Nacht jemanden aus Pakistan kennengelernt, der hier an der Uni IT studiert und nebenbei in der Bäckereifabrik jobben geht. Es war interessant er war sehr begeistert von Deutschland und er liebt unsere Arbeitssicherheit und das Prinzip Berufsgenossenschaft sehr.

Das muss eins mal wirklich verinnerlichen. Die Hälfte der extrem rechts Wählenden hält sich für „Mitte". Was für ein Weltbild.
Migration, Klima, Wirtschaft: Testen Sie, wo Sie politisch stehen, und was die Deutschen insgesamt denken. Aber Achtung: Nicht immer ist die Mitte der beste Ort.

Warum muss ich eine binäre Anrede auswählen, wenn die dann nicht benutzt wird? Warum können die an einer Stelle (automatisch) neutral, wenn sie dann doch wieder nach Vornamen raten?
Das gibt's doch nicht erst seit gestern, sondern seit sechs bzw zwölf Jahren.
@Kate Hildenbrand (DE) Das schlimme ist ja, dass ich von Berufs wegen weiss, wie solche Prozesse funktionieren. Da wird an einer Stelle geändert, weil irgendwer genau darauf aufmerksam gemacht hat. Es werden aber regelmässig nicht die Schnittstellen verfolgt, denn das kostet. Es sei denn, es geht um Geld. Die anderen Prozesse kriegen also entweder gar nichts mit oder Daten, die sie nicht verstehen. Also werden die Eingaben von woanders ignoriert - oder man versucht ohne auszukommen - oder es wird (anhand des Vornamens) geraten.
Bin mal gespannt, was auf Adresslabel und Lieferschein stehen wird…

Diese Doku hatte ich gestern gesehen und als ich Deinen Feed sah, erinnerte ich mich an die durch mich zitierte Aussage des Justizminister Hessens als vorweg genommenes Ergebnis einer bedrückenden Gegenwart von Gewalt gegen Frauen. Diese Doku schildert eindringlich wie wenig Hilfe der staatliche Souverän Frauen ggü. in der Lage ist zu leisten, insbesondere bei Tätern, die diesen nachstellen und eine Bedrohung darstellen, wenn nicht gar mehr.
Das spannende Problem wird sein, zwischen „echtem“ Bewusstsein und der perfekten Emulation eines Bewusstseins zu unterscheiden.
Und das nicht nur bei Maschinen. Philosophie und Neurowissenschaften haben ja auch begründete Zweifel, dass es „Bewusstsein" tatsächlich existiert; nach welcher Definition auch immer.
Vielleicht haben ja buddhistische und andere Philosophien recht, dass unser Bewusstsein nur eine Illusion ist. Quasi eine Emulation, um bestimmte Funktionen zu realisieren.
Ich denke, dass es in der Praxis auch keinen Unterschied macht, ob unser Gegenüber ein „echtes“ oder „nur ein emuliertes" Bewusstsein besitzt.

I said, "this is unofficial, k? I'm speaking here as a trans woman in your community, not a lab instructor. This will not affect my evaluation of your work.
"But you do know that that gear is going to make for unhappy days for any trans or nonbinary person, and many other queer groups?"
He says, "Oh, yeah, I know about Rowling being TERF and such, but i thought since I do know that, it would be ok."
I looked at him dubiously. Social work student, mind.
"For me? That doesn't really mitigate you helping to fund my loss of rights. So...why not subvert it instead? You wanna do HP, first, don't buy any more merch. Second, you don't do Potter.
"You do Herman Grainger. A trans guy. Curly hair, haughty attitude, swot, top student vibe. Subvert it! Make it something JKR would hate. That's a powerful message of allys

He liked the idea. And I think got the deeper lesson, about being in a social justice field, you need to think about these things. If you had a trans client who came in on Hallowe'en, how are they going to feel seeing you wear merch that enriches someone who wants them not to exist?
Great teachable moment, and I think he got the idea. No further action needed, to me.
* I'm working, as every autumn, at a local small college that has a Bachelor of Social Work program, as well as a summer intensive MSW program. I'm one of three long-time activists teaching community organising alongside a prof of social work. We 3 are the lab instructors. Class goal: plan and execute a social action. A rally, sit-in, whatever. Something disruptive. They get 10 weeks to plan what we each could do and have done in three days. It's a fun job. Radicalising young social workers. 💚
I want that entire media franchise to be a washed up, has been, culturally irrelevant piece of junk frankly nobody cares about anymore. They make some new series or video game or LEGO set, and people just ignore it. They don't they don't watch it they don't buy it, they don't get it from the library, they don't even pirate it.
Zilch. Nada.
Every single thing you do about Harry Potter, whether you spend money on it or not keeps it culturally relevant. It means people think about it. The buzz is there online so corps think that intellectual property still has value.
If you REALLY insist on watching it, you pirate it, and tell nobody whatsoever. Treat it as more embarrassing than your forbidden crush. That's it.
Haha, years ago I heard a radio essay (so many years ago, the word "podcast" was still unheard of) about the linguistics of this song and how it cleverly exposed the male chauvinism in Aussie society (back then - surely, it's completely different now).

Because do you know who the supporters are, who are giving you the time to create this? It is us 108 people on Liberapay, who don’t pay you like 2€ per comic, but a weekly amount, not tied to any delivery of content. Who are paying you an average total of maye 90€ per week. For the time since the last release you should have gotten some around 10000€ from liberapay supporters. I myself (as your highest weekly public supporter on Liberapay) have been supporting you with 816€ (minus 5.95€ in bank fees) since the last chapter. And even the ones who don’t support you with 8€ a week, but maybe just 25¢/week have in this time supported you with some ~33€.
But we don’t get mentioned in the credits lists or anything (at least I don’t, cannot talk about the others). And that is fine. We are not doing this for acknowledgement. We are doing this because we want to support the idea. But it also feels a bit weird that even som

Als Antwort auf Tina • • •@lazy Hey Tina, first, thank you. 💜 I can assure that making the credits took me 5h, and all the Liberapay supporters were written in the top level to reflect the amount of donation they sent me and my gratitude for that.
But I also respect privacy: the donation on Liberapay are by default set to 'private' afaik, and can be set to 'public'. I display only this ones. It's written on my page since the beginning. liberapay.com/davidrevoy/ So, please check your privacy settings on your account.

If anyone looks at your Liberapay profile my donation should display at the top of the list, as it has done for quite a significant while now:

So I did assume that liberapay donations don’t go into the list at all. If they do I stand corrected.
