We ended the draft because the military's analysis of the Vietnam War revealed that 90% of all draftees would not shoot to kill, even when it was life or death. They'd shoot high or low, but they *couldn't* shoot to kill. As such, they actively degraded the war effort.

Fascism is a machine. All machines have moving parts. You don't attack the reinforced bits. And fascism, specifically, is a machine built to kill. When you take up the same arms, you're attacking them where they're strongest.
So, when you plan your resistance, unless you're a very rare sort--probably with preexisting military experience--don't plan for a violence that you can't and won't win.

Governments are nowhere near as omniscient as you think, and have nowhere near enough resporces to follow up on what data they do have.
Wanna resist? One of the very best things you can do is look suspicious as fuck while doing *absolutely nothing* illegal.
Consume their resources. Frustrate the machine. *That* is how you save lives. Not weapons. Not for the overwhelming majority of you.
Leave that trouble for those truly prepared for it.

Also also? Not to put too fine a point on it, but arming one's self is a responsibility - to do so safely involves building and maintaining perishable skills. And the best time to have started that is not "now" it's "some years ago".

I train with bladed weapons (well, blunt ones) every week, and the thought of using them in self-defense is fucking stupid. Like what's the plan here? You get jumped and then expect to have a minute to pull a knife out of your bag? Or walk around with one in your hand whenever you feel unsafe, thus pre-escalating any confrontation? A knife is an offensive weapon, not a defensive one. They only get more people hurt.
No, your first plan should always be to de-escalate and defuse the situation. Keep your hands low, make it clear you're not interested in a fight. Don't brandish anything at anyone.
Your second plan, if you can, is to run. Keep an eye on your escape routes, don't let people back you into a corner.
Only after both those options are exhausted should you turn to fighting. And the only "weapon" I'd recommend is a good stout umbrella. It's not perceived as a weapon, meaning you can still de-escalate with one in your hand. You can give someone a swift knock in the jaw or round the head to daze them, or you knock the knife out of their hand, and then you run.
Self-defense is about getting away safely, not escalating a confrontation into a fight.

Are you sure that's still true in the age of mass surveillance, big data, and large language models?

First of all, LLMs are not intelligent. They're autocomplete on steroids. Their use actively degrades work efficiency according to every survey I'm aware of.
Second, the mass surveillance is the problem. The government now captures *trillions* of hours of video a year, plus an absolutely incomprehensible amount of text data--so much that it hasn't known what to do with it for decades.
The point of the observation regime is your post. It's the panipticon.
not to mention LLMs are EXPENSIVE to run at scale, they're not something you can keep in a cloud and analyze all the data with unless you are gushing money like niagra falls (as is happening with OpenAI and similar) so the mass surveillance is mostly done on-device, which means you can easily control what data is analyzed by choosing what devices to keep.
If your device has an NPU and an operating system not under your control (non-rooted android, iOS, windows, etc.), it's likely going to be analyzing your data whether you want it to or not. Older android phones work with most apps anyway, because phones haven't really changed in years! Remember, regular data is practically useless to surveillance agencies (analyzing it is hard) but metadata is incredibly useful, so they'll try to make the analysis and such into features (tag your friends with their face on facebook!)
And to justify upgrading these new phones and spending all that money, they try to make it all features... they don't bother hiding away the surveillance but instead trying to make it the hot new thing... LLM summarization in iOS? also easy to do sentiment analysis (not necessarily what they're doing but it's easy). Recall in Windows is treated as a feature but is also a very searchable surveillance tool (that luckily got pushback but is still going to be activated and forced on users).
Recall got pushback because it's an incredibly tangible form of surveillance that's suuper easy for people to understand the implications of: "oh my god it screenshots what i'm doing? i'd hate it if some random person did that to me" is easier to understand than abstract privacy stuff like collecting sentiment analysis and profiling people for ad tracking.
that reminds me of the end of Bonelab, this super innovative VR game where everything has physics and avatar/body switching is a main mechanic (and jimmy here just saved you from a conservative small town where any modification of body, mind, environment is against the law and they hung you at the start of the game for it):

to reinforce that point, a *lot* of resistance during the Second World War was quiet and subtle. Factory workers and slaves discreetly sabotaging things, people hiding Jews, etc.
Plus, those who used guns & bombs had active help from Allied nations via the British Special Operations Executive and US Office of Strategic Services.
Very worth keeping in mind - having a gun in the home multiplies suicide risk by like 6x. Not just for you but for everyone in the home.
Are you absolutely ironclad for certain sure neither you nor anyone in your home has ever struggled with suicidal thought nor ever will? If not, maybe don't get a gun lest it do the fascists' job for them.
I have so many conversations about why I don't have any firearms that are basically just different versions of this.

We're conditioned to consider retreat as being cowardice.
If I find myself unexpectedly having to retreat, either I've been taken by surprise, unprepared, or I've miscalculated or ignored the risks before going into the situation.
Continuing to push forward when retreat is the best option, is not brave, it's foolish
plus, and that even starts with pepper spray (not arguing against carrying that, but beware), if you manage to attack first, they have a reason to detain you and maybe even do worse to you in prison. Even holding can be very bad for queer people and they don't need a conviction for that.
A friend recommended a bright tactical flashlight and shoes you can run in - at least noone can kill you with those.

The part everyone firgets is that a fascist regime really really wants it's citizens to be alive. Fascist states tend to alienate trading partners badly, and so they rely heavily on internal productivity for taxes and power. If I can't deescalate with words I use open hand techniques. No weapons. Find places that teach self defense without weapons. Now, having said that, I grew up with guns and am a veteran. I can shoot 😛 but I again say "no weapons".
Just being near someone, kop or not with a gun, keeps me on super high alert for THEM to use it. As a veteran, I believe in and swore to defend EVERY part of the US Constitution but EVERYTHING has a time and place.

Nobody is born a warrior, and not everybody can become one, but sabotage of infrastructure or equipment can still hurt the enemy.
I post a lot about how queer people should arm themselves. but I always try and maintain that the guns are an absolute last resort.
My ability to have a friendly mask and de-escalate a situation is certainly going to get me much farther than all this time and money I'm spending on firearms training.

However, most white people will never appreciate what the world was like for Black folk during the Civil Rights Era. Having a gun for physical protection meant something vastly different to my family than it does to middle class white people whose first experience with oppression is the comically disconnected threat of social media memes about death camps. My father was beaten into the hospital by police for drinking from a fountain.
I would strongly advise against any equivalency between these two populations in what it means to hold a gun for the protection of your own life.

Gestern fahre ich um 17 Uhr die stockdunkle, unbeleuchtete Strasse zu unserer Siedlung im Wald. Wirklich: Kein Licht ausser von den Sternen und meinen Scheinwerfern.
200m vor mir hüpft etwas kleines gelbes knapp über dem Boden auf und ab. Ansonsten nichts zu sehen. Ist eh 30er Zone, also bin ich ja vorsichtig.
Kann kein Mensch mit Hund sein. Die laufen alle mit Taschenlampen, Reflektoren und LED-Halsbändern - an den Hunden.
Aber wir haben hier ne Bundeswehr-Einrichtung in der Nähe und deren Leute machen auch irgendwelche Einzelsportsachen draussen.
Stellt sich raus: Das ist nen Leut IN TARNKLAMOTTEN. Mit Tarnfarben-Regenumhang und Marschgepäck. Hätte es nicht diesen einen Reflektorstreifen am Fussknöchel gehabt, hätte ich es trotz Scheinwerfer etc erst im letzten Moment gesehen.
Das ist echt Leben am Limit. Meine Güte!

The huge variability in quality of lithium batteries for smaller emobility devices may contribute. Scooters and ebikes are burning down houses frequently enough for fire departments to be warning of the risk.
BYD hybrids are notorious for catching fire, as are some of the EVs LGChem supplied batteries for.
These are hopefully just teething problems of an industry rapid developing.
For stationary storage, LFP chemistries are extremely safe.

Yellow is "wiring or extension cords", green is "switches", dark-green-blue is "distribution board" and red is "other electrical installation".

There is an accurate perception of some small lithium ion batteries being dangerous due to poor quality and regulation. Same with SOME EVs.
This perception bleeds over into large house batteries, which are much better constructed, tested, and regulated. Sorry I was unclear.

I only recently (5 years ago) got my driving licence, and like most new drivers drive a supermini (I'm a single man so have no need for anything larger). When choosing cars I noped out on Ford because so many of their ICE cars caught fire and this is way more common than EVs.

Erstaunlich positives Enby Erlebnis heute in der Sparkasse.
Termin mit meiner Mutter für eine längere Liste und ich bin nicht selbst Kundy.
Beratungsperson (BP), ca. 50, rät erst mal falsch und spricht mich binär an. OK, hätte BP auch nicht wissen können. Ich korrigiere kurz wie immer und Wow! BP erkundigt sich kurz, wie's funktioniert und hält sich dann dran! Wir reden hier von Sparkasse! Nicht von queer-awarem Raum.
Dann werden persönliche Daten hinterlegt, Vollmacht und so. Einiges klappt - "divers ist okay?" - aber an einer Stelle entschuldigt sich BP und ist selbst unglücklich, weil in genau dem Formular nur binäre Anrede geht. "Da muss ich doch sofort mal nen Foto machen" - und geht das irgendwo als Fehler eintüten.
Zwei Stunden später kriege ich folgende Mail:
"Guten Tag (mein Vor und Nachname),
vielen Dank nochmal für das sehr angenehme Gespräch.
Ich habe im Nachgang die falsche Anrede entfernen können und auch im System nachhaltig hinterlegen lassen.

Darf ich dich fragen, wie du Menschen korrigierst, wenn sie dich binär ansprechen? Ich habe mich erst vor kurzem geoutet und bin im Umgang im „Öffentlichem Raum“ also Arzt, Bank, etc. total unsicher.
Sitze auch gerade beim Arzt und hab mich nicht getraut zu sagen, dass ich nicht mit Frau Bunthoernchen aufgerufen werden mag.

Die mittellange Form gestern zum Beispiel: "Weder Herr noch Frau, einfach (Vor und Nachname). Ich bin so ein diverses Sternchen". Der zweite Satz ist natürlich optional, aber ich habe festgestellt, dass diese Erklärung es irgendwie freundlicher macht (auch wenn "divers" an der Stelle nicht ganz korrekt ist, aber das ist, was die Leute kennen).
In Praxen und Situationen, wo ich ggf aufgerufen werde, kläre ich das bei der Anmeldung.
Und ich schiebe auch häufig den Enby Flyer hinterher (blog.enby-box.de/20210824_herz…).
Wahrscheinlich gibt es aber auch Faktoren in meiner Erscheinung, weshalb es bei mir häufig funktioniert. Ich bin recht groß, Ü50, wirke ruhig, meine Stimme ist relativ tief und meist leise.
Das klingt sehr gut. Jetzt muss ich mich nur noch trauen. Schwierig, wenn Mensch sich 40 Jahre immer angepasst hat und erst lernt für sich einzustehen.
Fürs Kind einstehen ist da viel einfacher.

Bei beiden Themen geht es um Selbstbestimmung, aber seltsamerweise sprechen die CxU Leute einmal den Leuten das Recht auf Selbstbestimmung ab (Schwangerschaftsabbruch) und beim anderen Fall fordern sie aktive Selbstbestimmungspflicht zur Pro-Entscheidung (Organspende).
Und naja, Selbstbestimmung über Geschlecht und Körper ist ansonsten ja nicht gerade CxU anliegen.

Die Armen mit dem E-Bike abspeisen zu wollen wird auf dauer nich klappen. Die sind arm, nicht dumm. Die erkennen eine Notlösung, wenn sie sie sehen und planen schon den Exit. Das E-Bike ist eine ökologische Sackgasse.
@geomant Dude. Hier geht es darum, dass Verbrenner-Mopeds durch E-Mopeds und E-Bikes ersetzt werden. Davon sind in Asien Millionen unterwegs. Auch mit einem Verbrenner-Mofa kannst du kein Band-Equipment transportieren.

Also: eBikes extend my personal radius. The average speed is higher, thus saving time. I'm less exhausted. Wind and uphill roads are less draining. There're many trips I would not or could not really go with a motorless bike.
The only alternative here - rural area, next shops, train station etc et least 8-10 km away: Car. Because no public transport to speak of.

Die Statistik der Neuzulassungen in D gibt jedenfalls den "dicksten Stahlpanzer" nicht her. Numerisch gewinnen die Standard-Limousinen wie Golf und Astra.
Gerade Stadtleute verzichten zunehmend auf ein eigenes Auto, weil die Folgeprobleme und -kosten den Nutzen nicht aufwiegen. Knappe, teure und weit entfernte Parkplätze, usw. Die Erkenntnis, dass eins mit einem Auto dort nicht besser dran ist.
Viele Städte - ausser Berlin... - beschränken innerstädtischen Autoverkehr. Da bleibt dann ÖPNV, zu Fuss oder (e)Bike, Roller, usw.
In D unterschätzt du mE auch die Wahlfreiheit. Auch Menschen die ein Auto besitzen nutzen aus obigen Gründen trotzdem und zusätzlich kleinere Vehikel und dann gerne so angenehme wie ein eBike oder einen e(Steh)Roller. Von letzteren sind bei uns im ländlichen Raum erstaunlich viele private unterwegs. Gerade Jüngere fahren mehr damit als mit rein mechanischen Fahrädern.
Das ist also keine Notlösung, sondern Entscheidung für ein besseres persönliches Gesamtergebnis.
Ich denke, dass Lindner nicht mal wirklich einen Fehler sieht - ausser dass der Plan nicht geklappt hat und dann auch noch die Partei, bzw Lindner die Presse nicht unter Kontrolle hatte.
Seine Vorgehensweise selbst findet er meiner Ansicht nach vollkommen okay; die Sabotage der Regierungsarbeit und damit die Gefährdung der ganzen Bundespolitik, die Auswirkungen auf Bürger’innen, Wirtschaft usw.
Denn für ihn geht es ja um ihn allein und seine Glaubenssätze. Alles andere ist egal.
Lindner ist absolut von sich überzeugt. Eine gefährliche Mischung: Machtstrebender Egozentriker auf einer realitätsfernen, religionsgleichen neoliberalen Mission. fed.brid.gy/r/bsky.app/profile…

bitte wenden Sie sich mit Ihren Hinweisen an Herrn Lindner, nicht an mich. Er hat diese und andere Ideen für die Zeit da er sich um Kind und Haushalt kümmert geäussert. Ich habe sie ihm nicht erst als Vorschläge in den Mund gelegt.

Ich habe bisher wegen Erschöpfung (lol) mich nicht in dieses Thema reinfuchsen (Fuchs!!) können. Das gibt mir ein gutes Gitter, um damit weiterzuarbeiten, und ist von den Hürden für mich im Moment bewältigbar gewesen!
