Study of men who embodied a young woman in VR finds they felt disgust & anger when catcalled. Even those who were not catcalled felt fear: the situation of being a young woman alone at night in a subway station being enough to generate the sense of fear. phys.org/news/2025-12-men-embo…
Unfortunately, many women and girls know all too well what it means to be victims of verbal harassment. They are familiar with its emotional and psychological impact. What about men? What would they feel if they were in the place of harassed women?
Books published in 1930 will enter the U.S. public domain, such as:
The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett: This novel introduced the world to the famous detective Sam Spade. As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner: A masterpiece of American literature. The Murder at the Vicarage by Agatha Christie: This was the first novel to feature the beloved character Miss Marple.
Speaking of the FALCON, a new edition with scene-setting B&W photos of Hammett's and Spade's San Francisco, a "mapback" of crime scene locations, and a coda of two linked Sam Spade short stories answering the question, "What happened to the falcon" is coming in 2026: markcoggins.com/the-maltese-fa…
From #RetroComputing to #RetroMachining and #RetroFarming. Buy a farm, a village. Make it a productive place where generations and machines meet to help each other. Young people can learn old skills. By elder people that bring their machines, knowledge and experiences. The elder get support and, if needed, care. Create those places everywhere and connect them. Add modern technology like renewables. That's another dream I have. May 2026 bring us joy and resilience in decentralised ways :)
devBnB. An idea. Where city based hard- and software developers can book coding opportunities to go to a farm or small village project in need of open source/hardware expertise to build farm solutions, federated power grids, rural traffic solutions, …
@nina_kali_nina It's not just buying a farm, you might be able to purchase a farm in terrible condition with dire problems. Can you afford to maintain the farm? Or even pay the property taxes once you've bought it?
@skyfaller this sounds like a nice retirement plan, but I recommend taking into account how much stamina a farm needs. Especially if things are done without burning lots of fossil fuels.
> Prototyping a more sustainable way of living > > Our goal is to try to find another way to live, one that is more in harmony with our environment. There is a lot to figure out: what building material we use for houses, how do we store energy, what do we eat.

Exactly one year ago, on 30th December 2024, I laid the foundation of FediMeteo.
I took a VM, installed FreeBSD, and set up the first jail to support Italy. The goal was to create a tool for my own use, support a few countries, and announce it.
Unexpectedly, the enthusiasm was incredible. That pushed me to keep going, support more countries and cities, and turn it into what it is today.
FediMeteo now supports 38 countries and 2,937 cities, with more than 7,700 followers in the Fediverse alone, not counting the many people who follow via RSS feeds or visit the web pages.

Today is also Tuesday, a #ThankYouTuesday, so I want to say thanks to:
* OpenMeteo - @openmeteo - for providing accurate, high quality data, without which FediMeteo would be far less useful
* @grunfink - creator of snac, who made all of this possible using very few resources, on a 4 euro per month VM
* FreeBSD, which thanks to the efficiency of the OS and its jail implementation made it possible to run this service in a stable and efficient way with minimal effort
* FediFollows - @FediFollows - that periodically spreads the word about cities, countries, and the enthusiasm around the project
*All of you*, who suggested, encouraged, corrected, and celebrated this project
And forward toward supporting more countries and other interesting features already in the works.

In retrospect, that would seem like a pretty inadequate response.

Erstmal: Ich hab schon Silvester-Geböller in Innenstädten erlebt.

Saw the Fediverse described as where elder millennial, Gen X and boomers go to retire from the internet, and immediately felt the peace that passes all understanding wash over me. None of us have to struggle any longer. We completed our time.

Hello? What if endless fight for fight for fight about a fight is a thing that has ben imposed by state(s), billionaires and people whose work is to sell us something, and this sense of calm is just how real life looks like as soon as you throw all these VR glasses away and detach self from The System of endless run for illusion of the success?
Gen-Xers leave traditional social media because of world-weariness, the fading of our power in a world shifting towards the Age of AI Bullshit, and a spiritual call to the Federated Lands where we can find peace, as our time in the commercialized Internet ends with the defeat of the Metaverse and the destruction of the Meta Quest fever-dream. We travel west on ships from Reddit, X, and TikTok, seeking a final rest in the land of Mastodon, a place free from decay, though some linger or fade away in Bluesky.

The older Zoomers like me that grew up with it and are now winded from the onslaught, wanting to try out something akin to a cabin in the woods, but the cabin is at least attached to amenities.
Yes and no, half of my high school classmates didn't have social media when I last spoke to them. I choose pseudonyms except for LinkedIn due to being hacked and privacy concerns. I will always find a home away from home online though.
OK. As Gen-X i'm willing to concede that some of us technically qualify as elders. After all, i can get the senior citizen discount at Denny's, even if only barely. But the concept of an elder Millenial is just baffling and amusing.
@justincox “Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.”
I feel like this is the slow lane of social media. Chill but updates enough to keep the dopamine receptors ticking over.
I do like that I've met amazing people (present company very much included). It's still very much life, there's issues, imperfections, egos and whatnot. But it's enough for now.
@LevZadov Not to get too granular on a vibe, but I imagine we Mastodon Boomers got our dogs vs cats / Mac vs PC jollies out on UseNet and that’s why we don’t continue arguing on FB. Nobody (save trolls) stoked it. I do not blame Capitalism for that impulse then or now, just the energy of youth without appropriate vehicle. But Platforms make money and build evil power off stoking it. Mastodon Zoomers are too savvy to engage—culture DOES evolve and metabolize such things sometimes!
been doing this all my life, internet and “real life”. I believe it’s a trait of Gen Xers: if you are annoying and/or boring, we will hit you with mighty indifference and move on without you. Their loss not ours 😁
In order to keep up to date with pictures from my daughter and now her partner both working in Canada I went ont on instagram or rather as they said Instagrampa.
"Pilot-Einspritzung“, Temperaturkurven, haufenweise Sensoren, AdBlue-Einspritzung, usw.
Edit: Rechtschreibung

Meredith Whittaker (@Mer__edith) has been invited to speak at #39C3 later today. If you make it to the mic in time, here is an interesting question for her: "If I’m put on a boycott list by the Trump regime because I’m openly anti-fascist or oppose war crimes, will you adhere to US laws and block my access to #Signal?"

It was a Tuesday in 1981 when the San Francisco police kicked in the door.
Inside the small apartment, they expected to find a hardened criminal. They expected a drug kingpin. They expected resistance.
Instead, they found a 57-year-old waitress in an apron.
The air in the apartment smelled sweet, thick with chocolate and something earthier. On the kitchen counter, cooling on wire racks, were 54 dozen brownies.
The police officers began bagging the evidence. They confiscated nearly 18 pounds of marijuana. They handcuffed the woman, whose name was Mary Jane Rathbun.
She didn't look scared. She didn't look guilty.
She looked at the officers, smoothed her apron, and reportedly said, "I thought you guys were coming."
She was booked into the county jail. The headlines wrote themselves. A grandmother running a pot bakery. It seemed like a joke to the legal system, a quirky local news story about an older woman behaving badly.

But Mary wasn't baking for fun. And she certainly wasn't baking for profit.
To understand why Mary risked her freedom, you have to understand the silence of the early 1980s.
San Francisco was gripping the edge of a cliff. A mysterious illness was sweeping through the city, specifically targeting young men. Later, the world would know it as AIDS. But in those early days, it was just a death sentence that no one wanted to talk about.
Families were disowning their sons. Landlords were evicting tenants. Even doctors and nurses, paralyzed by the fear of the unknown, would sometimes leave food trays outside hospital doors, afraid to breathe the same air as their patients.
Men in their twenties were wasting away in sterile rooms, dying alone.
Mary knew what it felt like to lose a child.
Years earlier, in 1974, her daughter Peggy had been killed in a car accident. Peggy was only 22. The loss had hollowed Mary out, leaving a space in her heart that nothing seemed to fill.
When the judge sentenced Mary for that first arrest, he ordered her to perform 500 hours of community service. He likely thought the manual labor would teach her a lesson.
He sent her to the Shanti Project and San Francisco General Hospital.
It was a mistake that would change American history.
Mary walked into the AIDS wards when others were walking out. She didn't wear a hazmat suit. She didn't hold her breath. She saw rows of young men who looked like ghosts—skeletal, in pain, and terrified.
She saw "her kids."
She began mopping floors and changing sheets. But soon, she noticed something the doctors were missing. The harsh medications the men were taking caused violent nausea. They couldn't eat. They were starving to death as much as they were dying of the virus.
Mary knew a secret about the brownies she had been arrested for.
She knew they settled the stomach. She knew they brought back the appetite. She knew they could help a dying man sleep for a few hours without pain.
So, she made a choice.
She went back to her kitchen. She fired up the oven. She started mixing batter, not to sell, but to save.
Every morning, Mary would bake. She lived on a fixed income, surviving on Social Security checks that barely covered her rent. Yet, she spent nearly every dime on flour, sugar, and butter.
The most expensive ingredient—the cannabis—was donated. Local growers heard what she was doing. They began dropping off pounds of product at her door, free of charge.
She packed the brownies into a basket and took the bus to the hospital.
She walked room to room. She sat by the bedsides of men who hadn't seen their own mothers in years. She held their hands. She told them jokes. And she gave them brownies.
"Here, baby," she would say. "Eat this. It'll help."
And it did.
Nurses watched in amazement as patients who hadn't eaten in days began to ask for food. The constant retching stopped. The mood on the ward shifted from despair to a quiet sort of comfort.
Mary Jane Rathbun became "Brownie Mary."
For over a decade, this was her life. She baked roughly 600 brownies a day. She went through 50 pounds of flour a week. She became the mother to a generation of lost boys.
She washed their pajamas. She attended their funerals. She held them while they took their last breaths.
She did this while the government declared a "War on Drugs."
By the early 1990s, the political climate was hostile. Politicians were competing to see who could be "tougher" on crime. Mandatory minimum sentences were locking people away for decades.
In 1992, at the age of 70, Mary was arrested again.
This time, the stakes were lethal. She was charged with felonies. The district attorney looked at her rap sheet and saw a repeat offender. He threatened to send her to prison.
One prosecutor famously whispered to a colleague that he was going to "kick this old lady's ass."
They underestimated who they were dealing with.
They thought they were prosecuting a drug dealer. In reality, they were attacking the most beloved woman in San Francisco.
When the news broke that Brownie Mary was facing prison, the city erupted.
It wasn't just the activists who were angry. It was the doctors. It was the nurses. It was the parents who had watched Mary care for their dying sons when the government did nothing.
Mary turned her trial into a pulpit.
She arrived at court not as a defendant, but as a grandmother standing her ground. The media swarmed her. Reporters asked if she was afraid of prison. They asked if she would stop baking if they let her go.
Mary looked into the cameras, her voice gravelly and firm.
"If the narcs think I'm gonna stop baking brownies for my kids with AIDS," she said, "they can go fuck themselves in Macy's window."
The quote ran in newspapers across the country.
The court didn't stand a chance.
Testimony poured in. Doctors from San Francisco General Hospital wrote letters explaining that Mary’s brownies were medically necessary. Patients testified that she was an angel of mercy.
The charges were dropped.
Mary walked out of the courthouse a free woman. But she didn't go home to rest. She realized that her personal victory wasn't enough. As long as the law was broken, her "kids" were still in danger.
She needed to change the law.
August 25 was declared "Brownie Mary Day" by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. It was a nice gesture, but Mary wanted policy, not plaques.
She teamed up with fellow activist Dennis Peron. Together, they opened the San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club—the first public dispensary in the United States. It was a safe haven where patients could get their medicine without fear of arrest.
But Mary wanted more. She wanted the state of California to acknowledge the truth.
She campaigned for Proposition 215. She traveled the state, despite her failing health. She spoke in her simple, direct way. She didn't talk about liberties or economics. She talked about compassion. She talked about pain.
She forced voters to look at the issue through the eyes of a grandmother.
In 1996, Proposition 215 passed. California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana.
It was a domino effect. Because one woman refused to let her "kids" suffer, the public perception of cannabis shifted. The Economist later noted that Mary was single-handedly responsible for changing the national conversation.
She never got rich.
She had always joked that if legalization ever happened, she would sell her recipe to Betty Crocker and buy a Victorian house for her patients to live in.
She never sold the recipe. She never bought the house.
Mary Jane Rathbun died in 1999, at the age of 77. She passed away in a nursing home, poor in money but rich in legacy.
Today, over 30 states have legalized medical marijuana. Millions of people use it to manage pain, seizures, and nausea.
Most of them have never heard of Mary.
They don't know that their legal prescription exists because a waitress in San Francisco decided that the law was wrong and her heart was right.
They don't know about the 600 brownies a day.
They don't know about the thousands of hospital visits.
Mary didn't set out to be a hero. She told the Chicago Tribune years before she died, "I didn't go into this thinking I would be a hero."
She was just a mother who had lost her daughter, trying to help boys who had lost their way.
She proved that authority doesn't always equal morality.
She proved that sometimes, the most patriotic thing a citizen can do is break a bad law.
Every August, a few people in San Francisco still celebrate Brownie Mary Day. But her true memorial isn't a date on a calendar.
It is found in every oncology ward where a patient finds relief. It is found in every dispensary door that opens without fear.
It is found in the simple, quiet courage of anyone who sees suffering and refuses to look away.
Mary taught us that you don't need a law degree to change the world. You don't need millions of dollars. You don't need political office.
Sometimes, all you need is a mixing bowl, an oven, and enough love to tell the world to get out of your way.

Let's ignore if it is AI or not. Also, spending those 4 minutes reading on something that could have technically been a bit shorter and less emotional will not make or break your day. It made valid points that are by now scientifically mostly solidified and provided some historical background.
Now, what needs to happen is scale, more research and regulation to ensure safe access, balanced and scientifically informed education, quality control, availability and prevention such that those who might be harmed by the substance are not harmed by it and those who could profit from it and chose to do so can do so in an informed, safe, pleasant and cost efficient way.
Since this is a US focused post, I'd like to point out the obvious link, curious to not have seen it here yet. I'll spare the comment on who signed it.

Oh, and you can still put your money where your words are. There are a few big board listed equities, the rest is #OTC or #CSE. Size-wise you can chose from ultra-corporate overlord (miniature edition) to basically-mom-and-pop store and of course #REIT or ancillary. Most of those still run on retail money to a large degree. Some might have some substantial future upside. You can have #Bitcoin style risk (and some of its upside) with actual manufacturing economy sector equities that do create actual jobs...but please, as with the substance: do substantial research what you are getting involved in. #weedstocks

Irgendwann beginnt man abzuschalten. Zumindest braucht man Pausen.

Also: sich davor schützen heißt: Anhalten! Ruhe suchen. Nachdenken.
