@RandomDamage @Sobex In my vision, I wanted to make her more like a resident or researcher at the University of Magic, a role where she could study, teach, access the library, speak directly to the headmaster, and get invited to the New Year party, etc... But it's hard to build a more complete lore with just 4 panels at a time.
Though, re-checking all the story, the goth witch looks too young for a post-doc, and also her relation to the info provided by the parrot is really what you might expect from a bachelor or master student, but not someone with a PhD under her belt. A fortiori a permanent researcher would have the ability to check a good chunk of the parrot nonsense, and avoid incinerating herself.
So my personal take, given what we have now could be a witch at the beginning of her PhD, or in her Master's (since she's getting a bit more assertive). A PhD student is a lot closer to faculties and could well be invited for the new year party she's in.
@Sobex For sure, having her in her late years of study could be an advantage if I decide to show other students, and their relation with their Avian Intelligence later. So, I'm not closing this door. I'll see, writing is difficult, and sometime I have to take direction for a good 4 panels and... the lore will follow later :) Thank you for the feedback!
@dereisenhofer Yes, it looks like I'm inspired to continue the weekly comics stories around this two characters. The AI industry pissed me off with the training of 20 years of my artwork without my consent and many other reason, and I find therapeutic to write these little stories to cope with that. 🤣
This comic is perfect to present the problems with LLMs. And the parrot already is my favourite picture to explain LLMs. Like, would we say a parrot is intelligent because it learned to say "Who's there" if someone said "knock knock"?

I met the concept after brainstorming with Framasoft for a mechanical Parrot mascot illustration on one of their campaign peppercarrot.com/en/viewer/fra… . Later, I felt the idea of a cyber AI Parrot character would be a powerful concept and character, like in books of some of my favorite authors ( A. Douglas , T. Pratchett ). And here we are ☺️ .

@tiredbun @voxel I've seen enough blatantly wrong LLM-generated alt text and spell check results that I don't think the technology is fit for purpose. Any purpose. AI "hallucination" is not a solvable problem: It's the exact thing LLMs are designed to do. So, with all due respect to the person being quoted here, I don't trust anyone who would entrust something as important as accessibility to AI.
@Linebyline I totally agree, this is a good point. For sure, I think LLM-generated alt text should only be used as, eg. , a quick placeholder text to fill up an editing text-area, requiring a human to post-fix it. I strongly wish the output of any LLM should never go into public or production unsupervised. A human should always be required in the last chain of the process with a strong expertise on the task to critic, rewrite, adapt and make it better.

Note: I tried out of curiosity and research via a local install of flathub.org/en/apps/com.jeffse… and it was really bad: 'open source' AI LLMs model I tried can't make a punchline, or an ending twist. Every story they output can't surprise the audience: they are statistically tropes, story slop, and the ending is always super cringe. But this test was super educational about CPU usage: super slow despite having a powerful computer. Uninstalled.

@papush_ For the weekly, yes. In background I'm still in the production of a Pepper&Carrot episode that has nothing to do with AI. I understand that this theme feels annoying for those who wants to just stop this topic. But understand that for me, with all the last 20 years of my artworks they trained without my consent, my art style, and all, I feel powerless. Making comic to mock it is my way to cope with that, it's therapeutic. I promise I'll do something else once I'm done with it.

One token at a time (word, piece of word, punctuation, etc), probabilistically.
What happens after text turns to numbers and goes through neural network, is a probability distribution. Similar to Library of Babel, albeit guided'ish. Token #1 is this likely, and #2 is that likely.
And then, sampler (or more often, several) comes into play. Something to not chose most likely (stiff, boring) nor random (model breaks easily) token. Repeats can be discouraged (hi to DRY sampler). Unusual but stable choices can be encouraged (hi to XTC). How about cut-offs (hi to TopK, TopP, MinP, and so forth) of unlikely junk? One can even discourage specific tokens.
And only then, the user asks something, which LLM tries to predict answer to or continuation of.

Do you see something here? Complexity. What you did is admirable; and in my somewhat-educated opinion, best LLM is below of mediocre human writer.
Still. LLMs can be useful if handled with knowledge of what they are, and of their limits (LLMs have probability of stupid mistakes; no, you can't avoid it). They are (opinion based on Anthropic's research of LLM solving math) bundles of intuition that output probability distribution out of vast sea of knowledge (of varied quality).
I think that the best open-weight (not to be confused with open-source) creative LLM is Kimi-K2-Instruct-0905. If you don't have half of terabyte of VRAM (yes, seriously), it will be slow.
For middle-weight I like Gemma 3 27B, and for quickness, LFM2-8B-A1B. Like 'em all with llama.cpp, and tweak/test stuff lots.
Anyway. AI, is mostly, a plague. For greedy people to get richer, for lazy to get lazier. Even if there is some space for hobby that can improve one's life (carefully!).
Just want to say ~ don't discard all 'cause of first try; the picture is incomplete (and moving).
Wanna a funny example of LLM output? I asked it to use MCTS for fox poem (to entertain self), but it gave a poem about fox using MCTS. What a silly poor thing...

Firstly, another aspect is quantization, or in other words, reducing precision (and space taken) of numbers so LLMs will run quicker and in less of video memory (or just RAM, if slower pace is acceptable). There are various formats of it, and llama.cpp uses GGUF format with... very many types. And less precision loss sometimes makes models more stiff (hence why for creative purposes I often prefer Q4 or Q5 quants).
Secondly, LLMs have limited context ~ literally, number of tokens they can process at maximum (and it is another setting to tweak, and possibly quantize).
And 3dly, despite this being a hard thing to get (LLMs are generally trained for "correct" distribution), seeking edge cases and prompting fun ideas, can give good results sometimes. Here is example, of Kimi-K2 (via Groq, 'cause running this giant mainly from SSD is too slow even for my patience).

...it's quite ironic, really, that to get funny bits (only sometimes; not reliably), one must already know writing somewhat and have technical skill, too.
At the bottom of Pandora's box is hope. I still wish to be techno-optimist. Like any technology, machine learning can be used for good and ill.
And generally, technology done good for people. History teaches lessons; modern humans are much tamer than tribal ones, food standards are better, there are more obese people than starving (not ideal, but better than past).
So. Take this piece of knowledge not with fear, but with hope. Good humans exist, and do stuff.
Times get tough and uncertain sometimes, but if changes of the past has teached us something, is that making this world better (even in small ways) is very worthwhile.

In den Monaten vor der Wahl 2024 wurde ausführlich auch über Projekt 2025 berichtet. Es gab viel über die Besetzung des Supreme Court, die Verfehlungen der neuen „konservativen" Mitglieder, die Urteile gegen Abtreibungen usw und die "Diskussion“ über die Immunität des amtierenden Präsidenten.
Dazu massive anti-demokratische Aktivitäten in den rep. dominierten Staaten. Von School Boards, Gerrymandering, usw.
Und schliesslich gab es auch im deutschen ÖRR inkl ZDF Reportagen, wie die Trump-Clique und ihre Wählenden drauf sind.

Äh, doch? Eine ganze Menge Leute haben spätestens seit 2016 gewarnt? Journalistys und Forschende, die sich mit den Netzwerken hinter Trump befasst haben? Es gab sehr viele Artikel in US-Medien und in Europa?
In den Monaten vor der Wahl 2024 wurde ausführlich auch über Projekt 2025 berichtet. Es gab viel über die Besetzung des Supreme Court, die Verfehlungen der neuen „konservativen" Mitglieder, die Urteile gegen Abtreibungen usw und die "Diskussion“ über die Immunität des amtierenden Präsidenten.
Dazu massive anti-demokratische Aktivitäten in den rep. dominierten Staaten. Von School Boards, Gerrymandering, usw.
Und schliesslich gab es auch im deutschen ÖRR inkl ZDF Reportagen, wie die Trump-Clique und ihre Wählenden drauf sind.
@ZDF und andere sollten sich hüten, auch nur im Ansatz zu behaupten, „man hat ja vorher nichts gewusst“. Allen einigermassen informierten Menschen war sonnenklar, dass es bei der Wahl 2024 um Demokratie oder eine faschistoide Autokratie ging.
Nur: Es wollten zu wenige wahr haben. "Wird schon nicht so schlimm werden“.
Dabei lautet der wichtigste Satz im Umgang mit Rechtsextremen: „Wenn sie sagen, was sie vorhaben: Glaub ihnen wortwörtlich“.
Dieser Trööt gestern mit dem Auszug aus Stefan Zweigs "Die Welt von gestern" bringt es auf den Punkt: Nur dass wir es diesmal genau wussten (oder hätten wissen sollen), was da passieren wird. Die Naivität all jener Menschen in den 30ern scheint ungleich verzeihlicher als die rezente Ignoranz: Weil uns bei ein bisschen gutem Willen jede Information zur Verfügung stünde.

Ich erinnere mich an Diskussionen mit meiner Mutter, als ich warnte, dass das - vor der Wahl - bekannte Anzeichen von Faschismus im Aufbau sind. Las zum Projekt 25 - nichts war versteckt.
Zu Beginn der Amtszeit, als "viele" sich ärgerten oder amüsierten über die Dummheit des Präsidenten. Und nicht verstehen wollten, dass das nicht Dummheit sondern boshafter Plan ist.
Nun sind wir einen Schritt weiter, Menschen verschwinden, werden auf offener Strasse hingerichtet. Alles nach Plan.

Ganz ehrlich? Es war klar, dass es unter Trump II schwierig wird. Dass er aber so in imperialistische Selbstherrlichkeit verfällt, hätte ich mir nicht gedacht.
Ich glaube es gibt noch viel zu viele Menschen in Europa bei denen die "neue Weltordnung" noch nicht "angekommen" ist. Zuviele glauben immer noch es ist nur eine Episode, es geht vorbei und dann ist alles wieder gut. Erschreckend ist die Geschwindigkeit.
Er hatte doch vorher großmäulig angekündigt, dass das dieletzte freie , demokratische Wahl ist, wenn er nochmal Präsident wird. Deshalb hatten wir doch alle solche Angst davor. Bloß die Rednecks und Co haben es nicht kapiert (auch viele mit Mex. Hintergrund nicht. Ich kenne niemanden da drüben, der ihn gewählt hat. Alle Bekannten und Kolleg:innen sind entsetzt.

Denn eines stimmt was aus Südamerika kommt darf dort mit Chemikalien und Pestiziden behandelt werden die in Europa aus gutem Grund verboten sind. Und ja es sind EU Firmen allen voran BASF die diese hier immer noch produzieren und dort verkaufen.

Natürlich ist es richtig, dass Landwirte und Landwirtinnen ihr Grundrecht der Demonstrationsfreiheit wahrnehmen. Aus meiner Sicht ist es aber bereits eine Form von Gewaltanwendung, wenn sie dafür ihre Großmaschinen einsetzen. Die Geräte müssen bei versuchtem Einsatz aus dem Verkehr gezogen werden, damit eine friedliche Demo möglich ist.
Mit steuersubventionierten Betriebsmitteln zur Demo fahren? Können die das nicht auf eigene Kosten, wie alle anderen auch? Wer die behindert, die die Ursache für den Protest sind (Autofahrer) ist kriminell, wer Unbeteiligte in Geiselhaft nimmt, verdient den Schutz des Staates? Ich bin so doof, ich versteh nix.
Vielleicht sollten die Bauern mal bei den Verrätern aus den eigenen Reihen nachschauen?

Oh I feel you, I disabled spellcheck on my phone because it's gotten *worse* since everyone started shoving LLMs into everything. (But also I think you're being modest. Avian Intelligence and the Amphora of Great Intelligence are very very good critique of the current trend.)
I have mixed reactions to the message. I agree that doing something by ourselves is an act of resistance, but I feel that doing things imperfectly is completely on brand with the current AI slop. Quality, accuracy, precision, ... do not seem to have any role in the AI world the tech bros are trying to create.
Don't mix imperfect with bad; many creators are just preventing themselves to share their creation because a subjective feeling of having to make things perfect. They can be tempted by using the plagiarism machine for escaping this feeling or , on another hand, go reverse and embrace a philosophy like en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sab… , that's what my message convey here, as well as enjoying the process and the benefits of seing in the self-reflection of our efforts something to be proud.
As a software engineer, the main message I receive in this world is to make things fast, sacrificing on quality, ethics and everything we have learned. So your message somehow triggered my hatred for all the vibe-coding messages I see around me. I understand the art world is different, and I do actually enjoy making my own private, very imperfect art. This is why I had mixed feelings; it triggered something deep in me, even if I understood and agreed with your message with my head. I suppose I never realised I am starting to have almost PTSD from all of this.
@antopatriarca I totally understand your reaction toward AI slop, vibe coding, and all this mediocre content. True, my usage of "making something imperfectly" can unfortunately be mistaken for that. I'm also tired about this, about the rules like 'find the 20% that does the 80%' , the pressure of the late stage capitalism in all area to rush and produce low quality for the highest price. It's hard in all of this to make a room for the 'imperfect but authentic' art form or craft.

If AI was just a "tooling" upgrade as your metaphor suggest about comparing it with a tech upgrade like computers did ~ 50 years ago, I would have no problem with it ... mostly (OK, still have problem with the energy part, the massive rip of online content for the dataset too, and their control/dev by the largest worst companies in world.)
This is why I sometimes consider just making art traditionally. AI still can’t do that (not yet anyway) and no one can accuse you of being slop artist (tho im sure some one will still say otherwise)
An even better solution is a bag with which to cover the bird’s head. Everyone knows that birds go to sleep when it gets dark, even if the dark is artificial.

dieses indische schwarze Salz verliert beim Kochen den Geschmack, also erst hinterher nehmen. Es fehlt noch Pilzpulver. Also getrocknete Shiitake oder Steinpilze ... hinzugeben, dann aber auch 20 min. durchgaren. Und Senf macht auch schön Aroma. In z.B. Aachen hat Cardamom hervorragende Gewürze. @eickot Yes, that's part of my plan and TODO, but nothing is done yet: I need to script it part of my update routine for the backend ( framagit.org/peppercarrot/tool… ) , the challenge being to trigger the process only once monthly, version the ebooks with a YYYYMM pattern, and also find a way to split them into sub-books for the weight. There is also research for the format, compression. Then, the appearance, and page on the website to serve them. A big task!
I'm busy, you know XMas time, but do you accept help? maybe I can take a look into that when Xmas time is over :) (I don't warranty anything, but cbz/cbr were a simple zip)
@eickot That's very nice to propose, thank you very much; but I think I'll be super fast for the Bash/Packing as CBR or EPUB; the real work will be how to manage the covers, creative commons notice, attribution, then the Website frontend to distribute them and make them easy to find. I just need to brainstorm about it to have clear vision of what it should be; the technical path to accomplish it will be solved quickly once I'm out of the blurry vision I have right now.
@eickot Something that can help me a lot, would be a recommendation or a download link to CBZ/CBR/EPUB you find particularly well done for comics. I need to experiment that on my Kobo HD Aura :)
Well, I can take a look, I've got some things with right protection but I'm not super into comics, just this year I bought a tolino shine color, (A Kobo clara color, with different software) If you wish, I can try to send to you in private some of the stuff that I've hat I think were well done.
Looking into it, in my e-reader, I think the only one that I've got with good metadata is a spyXFamily commic in epub with drm removed. (I bought that)

@eickot TBH, I wasn't aware metadata were supported in a CBZ file, provided that it's just a Zip file 😅 That's where OPDS is an interesting choice: you can separately provide info about the books.

Though, re-checking all the story, the goth witch looks too young for a post-doc, and also her relation to the info provided by the parrot is really what you might expect from a bachelor or master student, but not someone with a PhD under her belt. A fortiori a permanent researcher would have the ability to check a good chunk of the parrot nonsense, and avoid incinerating herself.
So my personal take, given what we have now could be a witch at the beginning of her PhD, or in her Master's (since she's getting a bit more assertive). A PhD student is a lot closer to faculties and could well be invited for the new year party she's in.

For sure, I think LLM-generated alt text should only be used as, eg. , a quick placeholder text to fill up an editing text-area, requiring a human to post-fix it. I strongly wish the output of any LLM should never go into public or production unsupervised. A human should always be required in the last chain of the process with a strong expertise on the task to critic, rewrite, adapt and make it better.

Note: I tried out of curiosity and research via a local install of flathub.org/en/apps/com.jeffse… and it was really bad: 'open source' AI LLMs model I tried can't make a punchline, or an ending twist. Every story they output can't surprise the audience: they are statistically tropes, story slop, and the ending is always super cringe. But this test was super educational about CPU usage: super slow despite having a powerful computer. Uninstalled.

They are many layers of connected numbers, modified numerous times to predict what's next in text.
One token at a time (word, piece of word, punctuation, etc), probabilistically.
What happens after text turns to numbers and goes through neural network, is a probability distribution. Similar to Library of Babel, albeit guided'ish. Token #1 is this likely, and #2 is that likely.
And then, sampler (or more often, several) comes into play. Something to not chose most likely (stiff, boring) nor random (model breaks easily) token. Repeats can be discouraged (hi to DRY sampler). Unusual but stable choices can be encouraged (hi to XTC). How about cut-offs (hi to TopK, TopP, MinP, and so forth) of unlikely junk? One can even discourage specific tokens.
And only then, the user asks something, which LLM tries to predict answer to or continuation of.

Do you see something here? Complexity. What you did is admirable; and in my somewhat-educated opinion, best LLM is below of mediocre human writer.
Still. LLMs can be useful if handled with knowledge of what they are, and of their limits (LLMs have probability of stupid mistakes; no, you can't avoid it). They are (opinion based on Anthropic's research of LLM solving math) bundles of intuition that output probability distribution out of vast sea of knowledge (of varied quality).
I think that the best open-weight (not to be confused with open-source) creative LLM is Kimi-K2-Instruct-0905. If you don't have half of terabyte of VRAM (yes, seriously), it will be slow.
For middle-weight I like Gemma 3 27B, and for quickness, LFM2-8B-A1B. Like 'em all with llama.cpp, and tweak/test stuff lots.
Anyway. AI, is mostly, a plague. For greedy people to get richer, for lazy to get lazier. Even if there is some space for hobby that can improve one's life (carefully!).
Just want to say ~ don't discard all 'cause of first try; the picture is incomplete (and moving).
Wanna a funny example of LLM output? I asked it to use MCTS for fox poem (to entertain self), but it gave a poem about fox using MCTS. What a silly poor thing...
In emerald fields where sunlight streams,

Its gaze, a search, a branching mind,
Exploring paths where truths unwind.
Each rustling leaf, a choice unseen,
Of cunning traps or paths serene.

Firstly, another aspect is quantization, or in other words, reducing precision (and space taken) of numbers so LLMs will run quicker and in less of video memory (or just RAM, if slower pace is acceptable). There are various formats of it, and llama.cpp uses GGUF format with... very many types. And less precision loss sometimes makes models more stiff (hence why for creative purposes I often prefer Q4 or Q5 quants).
Secondly, LLMs have limited context ~ literally, number of tokens they can process at maximum (and it is another setting to tweak, and possibly quantize).
And 3dly, despite this being a hard thing to get (LLMs are generally trained for "correct" distribution), seeking edge cases and prompting fun ideas, can give good results sometimes. Here is example, of Kimi-K2 (via Groq, 'cause running this giant mainly from SSD is too slow even for my patience).

And generally, technology done good for people. History teaches lessons; modern humans are much tamer than tribal ones, food standards are better, there are more obese people than starving (not ideal, but better than past).
So. Take this piece of knowledge not with fear, but with hope. Good humans exist, and do stuff.
Times get tough and uncertain sometimes, but if changes of the past has teached us something, is that making this world better (even in small ways) is very worthwhile.
