As a library, you should give me a directory where I can find anything I want. And these topics could be included in that one directory and not singled out in the middle where anyone looking at it can be targeted by some fucking bigot.
And there generally is, most libraries have a catalogue or at least a directory explaining the numbering system at a topic level. Thing is, this sign doesn't just help people come to the library wanting help with these things. It helps people in the library who are experiencing this and didn't know they could find a book to help them.
Hell some people don't even know they need help with these things until someone offers.

It's just the Dewey Decimal System, so you could look up whatever topic you like to find what it would be classified under. There's thousands of topics that are covered here - there's a reason it's used for every non-fiction clarification in a library - that would be far too numerous to list on a single shelf listing. This library has chosen to prioritize the awkward questions as a way to help someone who otherwise may not know how to get help.
Alternatively, most libraries have a catalogue you can search by keyword and it will give you book results which will let you know where they are on the shelves. But again, that requires you to know that the catalogue exists and how to use it. It's always going to be easier to ask a librarian, who can make sure you find something to help.

You cannot "get addicted to almost anything." That's nonsense. The DSM-V does not recognize masturbation, porn use, or sex as causes of addiction. There's no such thing as "porn addiction," for example. On top of that, it's not as if masturbation addiction is a new idea that science has yet to accept—it's the opposite, with psychology recognizing that the concept doesn't hold up to scientific inquiry.
People who compulsively or excessively masturbate almost always have an underlying cause. Masturbating is the symptom of that cause, and addressing the root should bring any excessive behavior into balance.
The issue arises, though, that the internet often thinks that being horny more than their peers means there is something wrong with them. People tell them they're "addicted" to sex, and purity culture spreads in earnest. There's now entire industries that have sprung up based on this pseudoscience, and often because of cultural or religious upbringing, people do not question it.
There's plenty of good resources covering sexual behavior and addiction. As much as I dislike Google, Google Scholar is a good way to find papers and studies on the subject(s).

The internet is full of bullshit advice (ESPECIALLY around sex and health issues). Doctors and therapists cost money, and frankly aren't the best way to just get basic facts and education.
My small local library has kiosks near the exits where you can check out a book completely unassisted. I could walk in, pick out the most embarrassing book, check it out, and nobody would ever have to know.
Thanks to a sign like this, someone who didn't know the library had such resources, and/or was too embarrassed to ask, has a better chance of accessing that info. And they also know that the library staff WANTS them to be able to access that info, further reducing any stigma they might feel.
Kids/teens whose at-home internet usage is monitored by strict parents, and who can’t seek therapy without their parents’ consent/knowledge. The parents may even be complicit in/perpetrators of the rape.
Domestic abuse victims who live with their abuser.
Homeless who can’t regularly afford internet access or a therapist. Many homeless people regularly rely on public libraries for internet access, and are common victims of rape and abuse. So why not direct them to other resources while they’re there?
Elderly victims, who still fall back to books instead of the internet, and who grew up with a heavy stigma surrounding therapy. Elder abuse is a very common problem, as they’re often a very vulnerable demographic with few friends and limited mobility.
People who just like to read. For many people, books are a source of comfort. Not everything has to be done on a smartphone or desktop.

It isn't comic sans though. It looks sort of like comic sans but it's much cleaner.
It's difficult to tell really because the quality the image isn't best but if you zoom in there's quite a lot of variation of the same letter form so it's an adaptive font.
Look at the two L's in bullying. They're not the same both times and the two t's in cutting merge into each other but not any of the other characters. So there's some custom letter forms going on there which comic sands doesn't support.

I took my young kid to a recent library event - the first time I've been to a library in several years, to be honest - and overheard the organizer (or leader or whatever) of the event saying "that's why we're here: to give people somewhere safe they can have entertainment for free."
I didn't have much in the way of an opinion on that person prior to that, positive or negative, but I respected the hell out of them after hearing them say that.

Heute morgen waren wir zum trans* Day of Visibility vorm Städtischen Krankenhaus. Wir wollen damit Sichtbarkeit für trans* Menschen in Krankenhäusern generieren, weshalb wir vor dem Eingang geflyert und uns mit Transpi und Flagge auf das Dach gestellt haben.
Wir wurden schnell vom Dach runter geholt, aber durften weiter vor Ort flyern. Dabei wurden überwiegend gute Gespräche geführt. Auch Pflegekräfte freuten sich über unser Dasein und bestätigten uns, dass die Verhältnisse für trans* Menschen im städtischen Krankenhaus sehr schlecht sind, denn das System kennt nur männlich und weiblich, kein divers, dazwischen, daneben oder außerhalb. Es kann nicht sein, dass sich trans* Menschen im Jahr 2025 noch immer fragen, „Wo sollen wir hin?“, immernoch täglicher Diskriminierung im Gesundheitssystem ausgesetzt sind, für geschlechtsangleichende Maßnahmen noch immer lange Wartezeiten haben und sehr weite Wege auf sich nehmen müssen.

Trotzdem können wir empowered aus dem Tag herausgehen, denn viele Menschen bestätigten ihr Entsetzen über die Situation und zeigten sich solidarisch mit trans* Menschen. Eine Person will ihrer trans* Freundin davon abraten, dieses diskriminierende Krankenhaus zu besuchen, während andere Menschen sich den Flyer nochmal in Ruhe durchlesen wollen.
Für uns ist es noch immer nur ein Anfang. Wir werden nicht aufhören zu kämpfen, bis es Gerechtigkeit gibt!

About the whole DOGE-will-rewrite Social Security's COBOL code in some new language thing, since this is a subject I have a whole lot of expertise in, a few anecdotes and thoughts.
Some time in the early 2000s I was doing some work with the real-time Java team at Sun, and there was a huge defense contractor with a peculiar query: Could we document how much memory an instance of every object type in the JDK uses? And could we guarantee that that number would never change, and definitely never grow, in any future Java version?
I remember discussing this with a few colleagues in a pub after work, and talking it through, and we all arrived at the conclusion that the only appropriate answer to this question as "Hell no." and that it was actually kind of idiotic.
Say you've written the code, in Java 5 or whatever, that launches nuclear missiles. You've tested it thoroughly, it's been reviewed six ways to Sunday because you do that with code like this (or you really, really, really should). It launches missiles and it works.
A new version of Java comes out. Do you upgrade? No, of course you don't upgrade. It works. Upgrading buys you nothing but risk. Why on earth would you? Because you could blow up the world 10 milliseconds sooner after someone pushes the button?
It launches fucking missiles. Of COURSE you don't do that.
There is zero reason to ever do that, and to anyone managing such a project who's a grownup, that's obvious. You don't fuck with things that work just to be one of the cool kids. Especially not when the thing that works is life-or-death (well, in this case, just death).
Another case: In the mid 2000s I trained some developers at Boeing. They had all this Fortran materials analysis code from the 70s - really fussy stuff, so you could do calculations like, if you have a sheet of composite material that is 2mm of this grade of aluminum bonded to that variety of fiberglass with this type of resin, and you drill a 1/2" hole in it, what is the effect on the strength of that airplane wing part when this amount of torque is applied at this angle. Really fussy, hard-to-do but when-it's-right-it's-right-forever stuff.
They were taking a very sane, smart approach to it: Leave the Fortran code as-is - it works, don't fuck with it - just build a nice, friendly graphical UI in Java on top of it that *calls* the code as-is.
We are used to broken software. The public has been trained to expect low quality as a fact of life - and the industry is rife with "agile" methodologies *designed* to churn out crappy software, because crappy guarantees a permanent ongoing revenue stream. It's an article of faith that everything is buggy (and if it isn't, we've got a process or two to sell you that will make it that way).
It's ironic. Every other form of engineering involves moving parts and things that wear and decay and break. Software has no moving parts. Done well, it should need *vastly* less maintenance than your car or the bridges it drives on. Software can actually be *finished* - it is heresy to say it, but given a well-defined problem, it is possible to actually *solve* it and move on, and not need to babysit or revisit it. In fact, most of our modern technological world is possible because of such solved problems. But we're trained to ignore that.
Yeah, COBOL is really long-in-the-tooth, and few people on earth want to code in it. But they have a working system with decades invested in addressing bugs and corner-cases.
Rewriting stuff - especially things that are life-and-death - in a fit of pique, or because of an emotional reaction to the technology used, or because you want to use the toys all the cool kids use - is idiotic. It's immaturity on display to the world.
Doing it with AI that's going to read COBOL code and churn something out in another language - so now you have code no human has read, written and understands - is simply insane. And the best software translators plus AI out there, is going to get things wrong - grievously wrong. And the odds of anyone figuring out what or where before it leads to disaster are low, never mind tracing that back to the original code and figuring out what that was supposed to do.
They probably should find their way off COBOL simply because people who know it and want to endure using it are hard to find and expensive. But you do that gradually, walling off parts of the system that work already and calling them from your language-du-jour, not building any new parts of the system in COBOL, and when you do need to make a change in one of those walled off sections, you migrate just that part.
We're basically talking about something like replacing the engine of a plane while it's flying. Now, do you do that a part-at-a-time with the ability to put back any piece where the new version fails? Or does it sound like a fine idea to vaporize the existing engine and beam in an object which a next-word-prediction software *says* is a contraption that does all the things the old engine did, and hope you don't crash?
The people involved in this have ZERO technical judgement.

I get really annoyed by that poem because it is so trite and so lacking in understanding of how power works.
It needs to start with something like:
First they came for the criminals and I did not speak out
Because the criminals had been a problem for a long time.
Then they made some group, that I knew nothing about, out to be criminals and I did not speak out
Because I had no way of knowing they ere false accusations.
By the time they work their way down to a group that is obviously not criminals you have long since lost because by that stage they have everything practices and anyone with a conscience removed from the enforcement arms.
And if you do speak out ...
Then they came for me because I had spoken out and was now an enemy of the state.
Then they came for my family and friends because they were known associates of an enemy of the state and they needed to make more examples to encourage people to shut up.
Rarely do we get the luxury of seeing an obvious hate victim group being a first step. And yeah in modern times it may well be possible to speak out but I would not bet my friend's and family's lives on that in the USA today.

Für die Bullies - Trump, Putin, Orban, etc - ist die Power Lie einerseits Loyalitätstest und Machtdemonstration. Andererseits bewirkt sie eine Erosion der Wirklichkeit: Wenn die Führung eine beliebige Lüge zur Realität machen kann, spielen Fakten faktisch(!) keine Rolle mehr.
Ganz wichtig, nochmal: Es ist egal, ob die Lügenden selbst ihre Erzählungen glauben, also für real halten. Es ist sogar ziemlich egal, wie viele ihrer Anhänger*innen sie wirklich glauben. Entscheidend ist nur, dass sich die Mehrheit der verordneten Ansage fügt. Insbesondere jene, die die Anweisungen ausführen.
Deshalb ist es auch reichlich sinnlos, diese Phantasmen (also irrationalen Weltbilder) "inhaltlich stellen" oder einzeln faktisch widerlegen zu wollen(1). Es kann nur das System an sich verdeutlicht werden.
Zum Beispiel so, wie Jason Stanley es in "Wie Faschismus funktioniert" tut.
Und dann dagegen angehen, wie Timothy Snyder es in "Über Tyrannei" empfiehlt.

Eine absolut großartige TV-Sendung von 1989 aus den USA. Interessant vor allem wegen "Toby", inzwischen besser bekannt mit dem echten Namen als Jim Sinclair.
Sinclair ist intergeschlechtlich und erklärt nichtbinär - "I remain openly and proudly neuter, both physically and socially" Quelle. Ausserdem autistisch und in dieser Richtung seit den 1990ern ganz besonders aktivistisch unterwegs. Das kommt in der Sendung noch nicht so raus. Etwas deutlicher wird, dass Sinclair auch asexuell ist.
Ich bin absolut beeindruckt, wie klar und schlagfertig Sinclair alles beantwortet. Auch die Nachfragen dieses Psychiaters, der hartnäckig wissen will, wie Sinclairs Chromosomen sind. Sinclair: "Wenn ich ohne Augen geboren worden wäre und Sie mir sagen, 'ja wenn du welche hättest, dann wären sie grün', welchen Unterschied würde das machen".
Fünf kurze Teile, alles englisch, ich hab es sehr gefeiert. So weit war es schon mal 1989. Leider leider sähe das heute immer noch nicht viel anders aus.

Yes! It was a good match for the limited VIC-20. A very compact language and very efficient in execution, it basically boils down to very quick CPU code jumps. Jump to address, execute what might be another jump, etc, until you land in a core executable routine. Execute that, pull return address from the stack, and jump back.

@stephie Meine Einschätzung ist immer noch, dass das Thema als nicht sonderlich prestigeträchtig betrachtet wird und sich keine der Seiten davon Gewinn verspricht.
Schliesslich müsste dann wieder ein ganzes Gesetzgebungsverfahren mit vielen Diskussionen stattfinden. Das dauert, während die praktischen Erlebnisse der Bevölkerung sagen, dass die Welt offenbar trotz tausender (nachgeholter) Änderungen nicht untergegangen ist. So wie in der Schweiz, Dänemark, Norwegen, Finnland, Spanien, Portugal, Belgien, Island, Irland, Luxemburg, Malta, um mal nur Europa zu nennen.
In den Diskussionen käme dann wieder hoch, dass die CxU-Seite von keiner belastbaren Expertise unterstützt wird, weil die Identität nun mal nicht objektiv ertestbar ist.
Im Gegenteil. Sie müssten ausserdem rechtfertigen, warum für eine kleine Minderheit wieder erhöhte Verwaltungskosten etc aufgebracht werden müssten.
Mit ein bisschen Glück geht das ganze also in einem Nebensatz unter, falls überhaupt erwähnt, und wird dann auf Prio 99 verschoben.

Ich hatte heute in irgendeinem anderen Dokument einen rot markierten Satz dazu gelesen. Sowas wie "wir wollen uns um die medizinischen Anliegen der queeren Community kümmern", schwammig und nichtssagend
die aktuelle Situation ohne Rechtssicherheit jeglicher trans-affirming care ist aber auch beschissen :/
Koalitions-Absprachen AG 9, "Bürokratierückbau, Staatsmodernisierung, Moderne Justiz".
Alles digital, mögichst antragslos ("Etwa nach der Geburt eines Kindes sollen Eltern automatisch einen Kindergeldbescheid erhalten"), zentrale Plattform, keine Schriftform. Und das Highlight:
"Jeder Bürger erhält verpflichtend ein Bürgerkonto und eine digitale Identität. Wir werden
die EUDI-Wallet für Bürger und Unternehmen bereitstellen, mit der Identifikation, Authentifizierung und Zahlungen ermöglicht werden. Wer den digitalen Weg nicht gehen will oder kann, erhält Hilfe vor Ort."
Ich übersetze mal: Wir lassen die Leute allein, schaffen persönlichen Zugang ab, machen uns von einer noch überhaupt nicht existierenden IT-Struktur abhängig, geben keinen Nachweis (Schriftform) das irgendwas angekommen ist (Fristen? Sanktionen?), und koppeln das mit einem zentralen ID-System, das wir auf irgendwelchen (unsicheren) IT-Geräten (Smartphones) mit uns rum tragen.
Also mehrere verkettete Single Points of Failure mit drohendem Komplettausfall, völlige Intransparenz für die Bürgys, Abschottung von echten Behördenmenschen, quasi eine Smartphone-Pflicht und ein geklautes Gerät schliesst dich erst mal von allen Möglichkeiten aus (siehe hier, was da alles rein soll).
"Hilfe vor Ort" kennen wir auch, oder? Call-Center und unterbesetzte Büros, deren unterbezahlte Leute keine Fachahnung haben, wenn ich da mit einem non-Standard-Anliegen komme, weil sie nur Klick-Hilfen sind für Menschen, die mit der Technik nicht klar kommen.
Und wie gesagt: Bei Anliegen, die die zentrale Plattform nicht kann: Pech gehabt. Computer says no.
Aber, ganz wichtig: "Etwa Unternehmensgründungen wollen wir innerhalb von 24 Stunden möglich machen." -- Warum? Welche Unternehmensgründung ist so wichtig, dringend und eilig, dass sie bis morgen Mittag durch sein muss? Mir fallen nur Scheinfirmen ein.

Wir denken an ein bayrisch geführtes Verkehrsministerium und "experimentell" vereinfachte Projektgenehmigungen gegen Naturschutz und Bürgyeinsprüche.
Übrigens: Vieles in "Bürokratierückbau, Staatsmodernisierung" ist aus dem Volt-Wahlprogramm abgeschrieben. Da bin ich doch mal gespannt, wie sich deren SciFi-Fans zu den zu erwartenden Fails verhalten werden.
Oh mann, wir brauchen nicht eine weitere Wunschliste Digitalisierung, sondern geeignete Standards, an die sich die föderalen Behördensplitter dann zu halten haben. Gute Standards entstehen durch einen gut organisierten iterativen Workflow, der die Stakeholder und die Öffentlichkeit mit einbezieht. Und dazu braucht es Hilfe bei der Realisierung, etwa durch ausgereifte und portable Referenzimplementationen.
Wenn das alles transparent und richtig gemacht wird, dann kann die Politik auch Werte unterbringen, die was mit den Themen zu tun haben. Etwa Sicherheit um die Leute vor Betrug oder Übergriffe aus dem Apparat zu schützen, statt Überwachungsphantasien unter vorspielung falscher Tatsachen zum Ziel zu erheben.

Dazu ist die Technologie... Schwierig. Wenn ein Fenster einen Kratzer hat, muss es dann komplett getauscht werden? Wie oft müssen die geputzt werden, um optimal zu laufen? Wär wahrscheinlich sinnvoller, einfach die Fassade mit regulären Solarzellen zu pflastern.
Reguläre Zellen sind keine Alternative, weil niemand in einer schwarzen Hölle wohnen will.
Und lass die doch erstmal den Prototypen bauen, bevor die ganzen "Ja, aber..." kommen. Ist doch grundsätzlich super!

Generell hört sich transparent geiler an als es ist. Es fehlt uns selbst im dicht besiedelten Deutschland definitiv nicht an Flächen für Solar.
Je weniger Solar in der Fläche, desto besser. Gibt schon genug menschenbedingten Flächenfraß in meinen Augen.
Das mit der Bullshit-PR stimmt allerdings
So gerne ich transparente Solarzellen in allen Fenstern/Glasfassaden hätte, ich fürchte, das bleibt Faktor drei oder mehr zu teuer (auch weil die geringe Lebensdauer von Perowskit-Zellen bei Gebäudeintegration ein noch viel killigeres K.O.-Kriterium ist als bei normalen Modulen).
krass, von sowas habe ich Ende der 1980er in einer Wissenschaftssendung (im BR Fernsehen?) zuerst gehört. Uni Lausanne, Titandioxid, glaube ich. Wenig später hat Kohl die #Solarzellenforschung hierzulande eingestellt.
When I was a student, I read a lot about how Silicon Valley companies were looking for 'problem solvers' rather than people with experience with specific technologies. At the time, this struck me as odd because problem solvers are not rare. Most people can solve a problem if you explain it to them. Indeed, the lesson from most of the formal verification classes was that a sufficiently detailed description of a problem is indistinguishable from a solution to that problem.
The real rare skill is working out which problems are the right ones to solve. Without that, you keep falling down dead-end rabbit holes and chasing local optima.
Everything I've seen in the last decade or so indicates what happens when problem solvers end up in senior leadership positions. You get companies that are great at solving completely the wrong problems.
