❝ The study found that just having a first-class section on an airplane quadrupled the chance of an air rage incident and that loading economy passengers through first class doubles that again. "We advance an alternative view: the modern airplane reflects a social microcosm of class-based society, making inequality salient to passengers through both the physical design of the plane (the presence of a first class cabin) and, more subtly, the boarding procedure (whether economy passengers must pass through the first class cabin)," the preamble of the study reads. ❞

Class 'Inequity' Fuels Air Rage - AVweb avweb.com/aviation-news/class-…

probably due to some entitled trumper thinking they can plop themselves on an expensive seat without paying for it.

I totally get this. The boarding procedure screams out your "worth." It parades your "worth" like a town square thrashing. And the spectators sit there, drinking their champagne, pretending to ignore you. Yeah, I can see how that could set some people off.

airlines are deliberately designing those experiences in order to entice upsells.

I thought too much about this in May after not having flown in nearly 6 years. I thought boarding first class first was strange…also why not back into the spot if you board that way? If possible. Also about the class dynamics then I think how many people will ever fly in their lifetime and then i get back to fretting about someone objecting to my dog. 🐩

That's because all the pan dimensional lizzidpeepl fly first class...

...THAT MOTHERFUCKER RIGHT THERE IS NOT REAL!!!

Like the Titanic. With the caveat that everyone dies in a plane crash while the wealthier passengers on the Titanic had a much better chance of survival.

The sardine size seating cramps people too close together, and that alone is a constant irritant. A 6ft tall man has no leg room. We are hip-to-hip with seat mates. It’s ugly up there in the skies. and yes, passing through the roomier version of travel, the comfortable seating, means it can be done, but not for you, BooBoo. I dislike flying

I’m curious which airlines board through first class. I’ve never seen it, usually first class is pretty segregated (on some airlines it has different lounges from business, and often its own boarding tunnel). Usually on the larger planes, you enter and turn left for first class, right for business, premium economy, and economy. It’s pretty depressing going to economy. You see nice seats, then you see ones that are okay, and then you finally see yours. Premium economy now seems to be about as comfortable as economy was 25 years ago. I’m by no means huge, but most economy seats are narrower than my shoulders.

@david_chisnall It's on the big international planes. I've seen it flying to Asia. The Middle East airlines do it too. I don't think US airlines do it much.

There's actually an even higher level class at some airlines where the boarding is from an entirely different lounge. That's generally used for people who actually reserve a private suite on the plane, and only some airports support it. I only found out about that because I asked my daughter how Beyoncé travels, since she doesn't have her own plane.

For those unbothered by class-based air travel, remember that during the sinking of the Titanic the rich survived while the poor were locked below.

The rich are doing the same with climate change and the planet.

The poor will suffer the consequences for the hubris & arrogance of those catering to the wealthiest.

There is no such thing as a first class person. Only some jerk who made money off the labor of other people.

So, if we want to see an uprising against the oligarchs, perhaps we should be taking people on tours of their dachas.
Als Antwort auf Kee Hinckley

@bhawthorne

Would it cause an uprising against the oligarchs, though? Or just your everyday rage incidents against non-whites?

We need more info on who the air rage incidents are directed against, and what made them so rage-ful. Depending on the sort of person who air rages, the cause of the extra rage could be seeing a non-white and/or woman in first class...

fascinating study! One thing puzzles me though: I have never seen an airline that has both single class and dual (or triple) class cabins. Granted, I haven't seen everything, but it's kinda weird!

(Just in case it's unclear - all the flights I took from companies like United, Delta, AA, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa... Had at least two classes, and all the flights from Spirit, Easy Jet, Ryan Air.. had only one class.)

@jpetazzo I just replied to someone else on this. You need to fly the airlines that have high end service (and on those, even economy is pretty good).

Split the plane down the middle with each class being on the left or right, just as in politics. Seems to work just fine.
Als Antwort auf Kee Hinckley

I always found the "boarding through first-class" to be vile.
"Get a good look at what you can't afford, plebes, be lucky you can fly at all."

I just had the mental vision of an Economy passenger boarding through 1st Class while nonchalantly carrying a small replica of La Madame Guillotine at chest level and casually snapping it open/shut, open/shut, open/shut while making eye contact with those seated....
