As a developer, we wouldn't use a consecutive serial number, we would use a Guid (globally unique ID) because a consecutive serial number would require consulting a central database, while a Guid can be generated offline.

Mostly, yes. But is there a gene that is different, even for identical twins? That's the cool twist of this story; I just don't think that it would be "sequential," because the encoding of our genome is decentralized and distributed.

@Qole Fair enough, but you have to admit, GUID isn't as catchy and creepy as serial numbers.

My point is that relying on a central database to generate every ID is a less robust design. I agree that the story works as-is, however. It's suitably unnerving 😁

@Qole I’m not a fan of „Intelligent Design“ hypothesis either 🤣
But such a serial number would be a very strong indicator.
