@thunderbird Please consider setting android:allowBackup="true" on Android. Backups are an essential security feature. Without the ability to easily backup & restore data, it is extremely vulnerable to being destroyed or ransomed. Security is not just about preventing unauthorized access, it's also about protecting authorized access.

Currently, Thunderbird for Android sets a flag in its manifest that prevents it from being included in backups. My emails, and the client configs for my email providers, are some of the most important data on my device.

I composed a message while out and about, but the message didn't send because my mobile provider has ended up on #Spamhaus #XBL. The message sits in the #Thunderbird Outbox.
On getting home to my WiFi network (whose internet connectivity is provided by an entity which is not my mobile provider) and attempting to resend the message in the Outbox, the message still fails to send, with the same error. However any email composed and sent while on my home network is sent reliably.

What's with the random GPG mention? It's a single implementation of an open protocol with multiple implementations. And most corporate email that needs to be end-to-end encrypted uses S/MIME not PGP. And both support either signing or encrypting and are primarily use for signing not encrypting (integrity, not confidentiality).
And, as others have pointed out, even with S/MIME or PGP for encryption, a lot of metadata remains unencrypted and visible to Google (who have an entire business model built around harvesting this information and selling products that are built from it.

We ask commercial users to support us because otherwise the servers they need cannot exist. Even our biggest supporters *have no control over our day to day operations*. I am not using ListenBrainz myself, but got notified by someone unpleasantly surprised by how their usage data is gathered. They expected a pure ethical music service, and the role of Big Tech consuming these metrics was unclear. They wanted to set their listening data to "followers-only", and found that impossible. Only then learned about this.
Idk how well you inform people upfront, which should be very clear.

On the home page, by your screenshot, we try to be as clear as possible that the website as well as the listening data is all open source. It is good to be aware that the nature of *every* open source and open data project means that it can be used by *anyone*. -a
I found time to do a quick review. This information is on a few pages, but I think we could have additional clarification in the footer (since not everyone navigates to the ‘about’ page or reads all the signup screens, etc).
Not familiar with ListenBrainz myself, I am a long-time humane tech evangelist. I've been passionate about open data for a long time, but I find my perspective shifting under current dystopic tech and societal trends. I fear "Fascist AI" fed by the treasure trove not just of human knowledge, but mankind's PII, the spoils of surveillance capitalism.
"Listen data" is very personal, can be inferenced on, and I would consider offering opt-outs or better even opt-ins for certain data.
That way you leave the consideration of this modern-day reality to every individual person: Do I want to share this for the benefit of the commons, or do I weigh in favor of protecting my own privacy? That would the most ethical, though it might disadvantage ListenBrainz slightly wrt the quality of the datasets.
Interesting discussion. In a perfect world we would have all the options! Sadly we are a small team and need concise goals.
