The battle for opinions is undeniably part of democracy - but not if the rules are rigged from the start. The Republicans have indirectly controlled the opinion-forming media so that ordinary citizens have been unable to develop a truly balanced opinion.
the super-rich controlling certain media outlets (social media), never before have these media outlets reached so many people - and with highly targeted audiences to boot. As they know everything about their users, they have been able to influence their individual opinions.
We are seeing similar effects from social media here. The right simply makes good use of the technical possibilities. It is much easier to spread lies than to dispel them or counter them with facts. The right-wingers mainly win with emotions. The question is whether the other side must or should stoop to the same level. Facts and the truth should actually be the basis for important decisions.
