In Iceland, female guides set sail,
Fishing for salmon, they prevail.
But the wild fish decrease,
Their worries don't cease,
Their love for the river won't fail.

I've said what I can about "prompt engineering," why the idea is facile nonsense, the complete lack of theoretical and empirical basis, and the organizational impact of promoting on the basis of "prompt engineering" skills.
But there's something else to be said, I think, about the underlying fallacy that makes "prompt engineering" appear to be real: namely, the incorrect assumption that LLMs can be "programmed" at all.
Elon Musk has taken over the database that contains all government employees. And he's locked out all the people who should have oversight over that data. It's anyone's guess what he'll do with it, but I expect that he'll be matching names against voter registrations and purging liberals.
We're in new territory here. It's like a gang has taken over the country. Is there a word for "governance by mafia"?

"Wenn also die Union jetzt einen großen zehn-Punkte-Plan zur psychosozialen Versorgung aufgestellt hätte, dann würde ich sagen: Ja, gut gebrüllt Löwe. Das ist eigentlich die Problematik, die dahintersteht."
Wobei ich mich frage: Warum ist eigentlich keine der anderen Parteien auf die Idee gekommen, mit genau so einen Plan zur psychosozialen Versorgung zu kontern, um den Diskurs wieder rechtzurücken?

James Joyce was born #OTD in 1882.
Together with Virginia Woolf and Dorothy Richardson, he is credited with the development of the stream of consciousness technique in which the same weight is given to both the internal world of the mind and the external world of events and circumstances as factors shaping the actions and views of fictional characters.

#Canada PM Justin #Trudeau in his speech Saturday reached out to Americans & reminded them that these #TrumpTariffs will hurt them economically just as much as Canadians.
The tariffs will “put your #jobs at risk, potentially shutting down American #auto assembly plants & other manufacturing facilities. They will raise #costs for you, including #food at the #grocery stores & gas at the pump.” In emotional references to the nations’ shared history, he adds: “we have fought, & died, beside you.”
#Trudeau says Canadians are “perplexed why our closest friends & neighbors are choosing to target us instead of so many other challenging parts of the world.” He adds: “I don’t think there’s a lot of Americans who wake up in the morning, saying ‘Oh, damn, Canada. Oh, we should really go after Canada.’”
Trudeau calls on Canadians to choose Canadian goods, to forgo Florida orange juice, Kentucky bourbon, or holidays in the United States.
Neoliberals: gross inequality is fine, actually.
Fascists: excellent, this is what we believe also.
Neoliberals: wait, not like that!
Yeah. Cosmetics and aesthetics, but fought over with big fanfare and seemingly fiercely by all the political brass until they settle on "rough" with everybody defending the new norm. Disgusting, innit.

The core problem with the CDC's move to embrace censorship is that it puts the legitimacy of all their publications under erasure.
Any scientific organization that will bow to political pressure for transgender issues, will bow for anything else Trump doesn't like.
Please digest the grave implications of this. It means that you cannot know what is suppressed. It means it is no longer a trustworthy institution.

Latter. Once Domain (codeberg.org/domain/app) is out and folks can set up their Small Web places easily on their own VPS servers using it and Place (codeberg.org/place/app) exists and is being used, I plan on looking into offering a little device you can plug into your home router.
Of course, you can do that yourself today by getting a single-board computer running a Linux distribution that uses system-d, installing Kitten via the one line installation command at kitten.small-web.org, and then running `kitten deploy <Git URL of kitten app you want to serve>` and you’d have your own little Small Web server device (if you’re technically-savvy but everything I’m working on is for everyday people who use technology as an everyday thing and that’s why there’s so much more I have to do to get it to that level).

Als Antwort auf Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️ • • •Let me step back, though, and be careful about what I mean by "programmability."
Traditionally, in computer science, that's meant that the device or software in question can be made to emulate arbitrary Turing machines; in its strongest form, it even requires no worse than polynomial overhead.
Colloquially, though, one can program a TV remote or similar — that doesn't mean you can run DOOM on it (well, some of you can). It means you can intentionally affect its behavior.
Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️
Als Antwort auf Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️ • • •I posit that LLMs admit neither the strict nor colloquial sense of programmability. The former could be argued formally in terms of the number of states that can be explored, using the busy beaver numbers, but that would be original research well beyond the scope of a few toots.
Practically speaking, LLMs fail even the TV remote sense of programmability — if there is some desired behavior you wish for an LLM to exhibit, there's no a priori way to decide what actions to take to achieve that.
Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️
Als Antwort auf Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️ • • •Should you use "please" and be more polite to it, or should you use "fuck" to bypass its guard rails? Who knows! As discussed, there's no theory to help you here, so you're stuck without a map to track back to what "prompt" you should start with.
The problem is that some prompts *seem* to work. Because these things are trained on lots and lots of stolen labor, it's not too hard to find text that superficially resembles some task or another.
Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️
Als Antwort auf Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️ • • •It's the whole thing where if you ask an LLM to multiply two small numbers together, someone has probably done that somewhere, so it "works," but it completely fails for larger numbers. "Reasoning" models can get around that by giving an escape hatch to eval, like the original chain-of-thought paper, but then why not just use eval directly?
But regardless, if you think of a task common enough that it has been solved in the training corpus, then it "works," right?
Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️
Als Antwort auf Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️ • • •The next step of the fallacy is to conflate the strict and colloquial senses of programmability. If you can give an LLM "instructions" to multiply two numbers, couldn't you give it "instructions" to do anything else?
Well, no. That's a giant leap, and one that's fully unsupported by evidence. But it *feels* right, if only because you can again try out common problems and find solutions somewhere in the training corpus.
Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️
Als Antwort auf Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️ • • •Computer scientists, as a lot, tend to have a pocket industry of proving that this or another toy model is equivalent to Turing machines. Billiard balls can be used to implement the Fredikin gate, which is universal for computation, and thus you can program your local pool table. Magic: the Gathering is infamously Turing complete, a fun fact to bring up during draft.
Those kinds of proofs are useful because the easiest way to show something can be programmed is to do it.
Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️
Als Antwort auf Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️ • • •That's precisely what you *can't* do with LLMs, though. Can you use an LLM to simulate a Fredikin gate if you say "fuck" enough, or do you need a "please" or two in there?
What's the construction? What *concrete* steps do you take to get an LLM to do what you want, and how do you know that you're correct?
With billiard balls, you have Newtonian physics. With MtG, you have the comprehensive rules. With LLMs, you've got ?????????.
Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️
Als Antwort auf Cassandra Granade 🏳️⚧️ • • •Even if you had an LLM-based implementation of programmability, will it always work? Will it work for programs up to a certain size? How will you know when it stops working? Will it work for a different seed or at a different temperature?
The programmability fallacy, as I'll coin it, lies to us and tells us not to worry about those problems because we can tell LLMs to multiply small numbers by each other and sometimes get the right answer.
