"display: none" is a CSS property that tells the browser not to display the thing it's on, which AFAIK also hides it from screen readers.
The idea is that if you put that property in a separate "style.css" file, screen readers will fetch the file and see they shouldn't display the text, whereas scrapers won't fetch the file to save on bandwidth. I guess you could easily test if this is true by just looking if scrapers actually fetch the style.css file.
