one would think so, but as of a month or two ago she's announced another book
Als Antwort auf froztbyte

@techtakes Speaking as a working writer: she's a hobbyist writer. At this point she's so rich she could spend £100K/week of her capital and still be a multimillionaire when she dies aged 100+. A novel typically takes a year to write and even JKR is unlikely to make significantly more than £100K from a book (unless it gets filmed). So she keeps writing for ego/self-esteem but not from necessity (to stop writing would leave a hole in her life).

Yes I am old.
I started using the internet before there where search engines around. The best way to find stuff was to hope that somebody made a talking URL. Like when you wanted to know about movies you tried www.cinema.com and www.movies.com.
The next thing where web rings. Like minded people with different homepages had a link on their front […]

Musk appropriating "grok" is on-brand for him, seeing as he fundamentally misunderstands Banks' Culture series and reduces it to "the one with the cool ship names".

Explaining the fediverse is a hard problem.

The answer to that one is obvious - to create free facilities and let communities form themselves. Right now youth centres have disappeared, teens are hurried out of any gathering space, play areas are regimented out of any joy or priced to prohibition and you end up with young people being left with the activity options of isolation, or group activities that are antisocial or involve substance abuse

Solarpunk Means Dreaming Green

Move the debate from Universal Basic Income to Universal Basic Services | UNESCO Inclusive Policy Lab

Universal Basic Services (UBS) is an alternative case to UBI.

Under UBS, the provision of free public services must go beyond health or education to cover other basic necessities (e.g., housing, care, transport, information, nutrition).

UBS can be more egalitarian with a strong redistributive performance and impact on income inequalities.

UBS can also be more sustainable by decarbonizing the economy in a just way - rather than disproportionally loading the costs on the lower income brackets - and by supporting sustainable consumption corridors.

Als Antwort auf Dharma Curious

Most of our stuff is means tested, and not only that - the means test is based on a made up metric from nearly 80 years ago that has never been adequately adjusted to reflect modern healthcare, education, and transportation costs.

In addition, the means testing doesn't have gradual cutoffs, so once you hit the threshold you lose all of your benefits, which is just insane on its face. You don't suddenly stop needing food or housing assistance because you get a ten cent raise. We should set the system up to encourage people to grow into self sufficiency, not punish them into a permanent underclass.
@LesserAbe

Als Antwort auf Prometheus

Absolutely. Been in that situation. I have passed on jobs/raises because it would mean losing food stamps or a rent voucher. Shit fucking sucks.

We will reach a solarpunk future by building community

A projection in Oakland that reads “liberation requires community.” What ways have you found to build community?
Als Antwort auf AEMarling

In the (anarchist) union I‘m in, we have neighborly get-togethers every month, where we talk about our life & work & just eat some food together. But it‘s really nice, there are people of different ages & different professions, so a lot of different perspectives.
Als Antwort auf AEMarling

Sometimes you build community by simply being the first to organize something -- anything.

Simple example: it's really hard to find a D&D game to join sometimes. But if you start a new table (and offer to DM), then you're flooded with prospective players immediately.

The whole "if you build it, they will come" angle works provided you're willing to put the effort in.

It always blows my mind that we’re such a car centric hellhole but when I was in college living in an apartment I’d have to sneak to work on my car because there wasn’t any DIY garages and it was against lease terms to work on cars on the property.

I’d have to wait until 5/6 at night right before it got dark and rush to change my oil or brakes before it got too dark to see.

These days I give my younger coworkers the pin and 24/7 access to my garages if they want to work on their cars or any projects really.

Documentation re: ActivityPub integration in NodeBB

Now that the alpha version of NodeBB v4 has been released, it means that people are starting to look into using NodeBB for testing (or if they're really looking to have fun, production.)

The first step in enabling those intrepid individuals is providing documentation!

While a little bare-bones at the moment, I've written up a brief summary of what NodeBB brings to the ActivityPub landscape, as well as a run-down of various settings/toggles/switches, and how to switch over to the code branch that enables ActivityPub integration.

What I don't know is what's missing. There's a lot about NodeBB's integration that's very obvious to me, since I built it, but what don't you see that you'd like me to write about? Let me know.

Thanks!

A very cool methode to bridge gaps. There is the problem, that it can result in a middle way, where that should not exist (eg. Human rights are non negotiable, so decisions which do not grant these should be excluded from the discussion. There can be no middle ground in this).
It does have the advantage of not creating a polarised field with breaches for anger/ridicule engagement.

Agenda Prep for August WG Meeting

Agenda preparation for the June ForumWG meeting can be found at this public link (anyone can make comments for review.)

Monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month, at 1700 to 1800 UTC. You can find them listed in the SocialCG Calendar. The next meeting will be held on 1 August 2024.

We will be discussing...
* ongoing research regarding resolvable conversational contexts (aka topics/threads), including backfill and synchronization. (Julian)
* FEP 1b12 vs 400e, and cross-compatibility with both FEPs in a forum/threaded discussion context (Angus)
* Implementation of Posts/Comments/Likes style feeds (Aaron Gray)

If you'd like to speak or inquire about a certain topic, comment in the agenda or reply here, the floor is open!

Crowdstrike takes out last remaining threat vector (the users)

The machines, now inaccessible, are arguably more secure than before.

This is fitting. The top topic on Xitter right now is of course the global Crowdstrike/Windows clusterfuck. But the AI summary of the discussion is hilarious, b/c it summarizes a bunch of sarcastic posts and makes it sound like a positive (or at least can-do) story.

Also, and this shouldn't be left unsaid, we're talking about the Windows kernel here. A place with C++ code so cursed it is legendarily unhealthy to work in, as the cosmic horrors contained within slowly eat away at your sanity and warp the perception of time and space. Seeing that code for a few hours is enough to make a grown man cry. Seeing that code for a few weeks is enough to make you never cry again, as the terrible truth worms its way into your mind.

"DEI hire", hah! The creature makes no distinction for race or gender as it fattens itself upon your failure! Even a glimpse at the edge of its abyss is enough to trigger a cycle of revelation - all modern software lies upon a rotting pile of ancient mistakes.

Are they protesting for something in particular or is it just a normal weekend in France?
Als Antwort auf lemmylommy

It part of the protesting movement against the megabassine in what protesters call now the "water war". The objective of this particular protest was to block the port of the city of La Rochelle which is considered by protester to enable the owner of the megabassine to do the business that require such a big use of water.
The mouvement has its own french wikipédia article . You can use a translator to learn more about it there.

Has anyone attempted the bike setup from the Monk and Robot series?

The Monk and Robot books by Becky Chambers take place in a very solar punk setting where significant rewilding has taken place. The main character is a travelling tea monk (you don’t need to know what that is) who travels with what is called an ox-bike. Essentially the setup is an e-bike-driven lightweight campervan or possibly wagon. My impression from the book is that the front bike does not detach from the back.

I’ve done some literal back of the envelope calculations and I think it would be possible to make something like that in real life with our current technology. But I’ve not been able to find any prior art, except for the Wide path bicycle camper, which is more like a trailer than a campervan. My guess is you could improve on the if you made the bike built in, not least because it’s easier to stop without the damned bike falling over.

Have you ever heard of or seen anyone make something like this? Do you think it could work?

Dieser Beitrag wurde bearbeitet. (10 Monate her)
Als Antwort auf Amanda

There was this very cool handmade bike trailer wagon thing: slrpnk.net/post/1833883

For the artist's experiences living out of it: theaimlesslywanderingartist.bl…

But that's a trailer. It sounds like you're describing something closer to a Bicycle Rickshaw, possibly on a tricycle frame.

You could even do a recumbent bike:

It seems like either could be enclosed using techniques learned from popup campers for a fairly comfortable living space.

(I think a lot about all the crazy contraptions people would make if the roads weren't exclusively the domain of giant trucks and SUVs, and if cargo bikes didn't have to fit themselves into narrow bike lanes and roadsides. I think people would come up with some really cool and weird stuff. Add solar panels and ebike parts, and they'd get really interesting.)

Dieser Beitrag wurde bearbeitet. (10 Monate her)
Als Antwort auf Amanda

I'm pretty sure there is a part where they talk about the bike as separate from the wagon. Ah, here's the quote: "Mosscap nodded at the wagon trailing dutifully behind Dex’s ox-bike."

And yes, I know the shading isn't ideal...
Dieser Beitrag wurde bearbeitet. (10 Monate her)
Als Antwort auf poVoq

I'd be surprised if this installation generated anything useful at all, since shading any part of a single panel essentially disables the whole panel, which in turn, especially in small setups like this, affects the whole array of panels.
Als Antwort auf Onno (VK6FLAB)

Newer panels usually don't have that big of an issue with partial shading, but it definetly isn't optimal.
Als Antwort auf Steve

It's fascinating to see the difference in reaction in the post here, vs. the post it links to where they're saying exactly the same thing that you and I are saying.

No idea what the difference might be.

Als Antwort auf Onno (VK6FLAB)

Yea bypass diodes help a little, (and they have existed for a very long time, nothing to do with “modern” panels), but any shade effectively shuts down the entire panel, and unless the charge controller is happy with much lower voltage, the whole series string will stop producing.
Als Antwort auf Steve

Panel Level Optimization

Prevents a shaded panel from affecting the entire string. Pretty standard on Australian residential setups these days.

Als Antwort auf poVoq

With that much overgrowth, surely it'd be more ecological to just let it be plants?
