I spent a fairly pleasant day with former congressman Inglis a long time ago.
We traveled out to Uintah County, where over 75% of their economy derives from fossil fuel extraction, to discuss the clean energy transition.
I warned them that they were failing their constituents by not preparing them because it's going to happen whether or not they want it to or not.
They, of course, chose not to believe us.

Krk ist eine wunderbare Insel mit kleinen schönen Städtchen. Krk empfehle ich immer sehr gerne, aber erst bei einer meiner letzten Archiv-Durchsichten habe ich das erste Mal festgestellt, wie oft ich selbst in den letzten Jahren auf Krk war. Jedes Mal bin ich mit tollen Erlebnissen und wunderschönen Fotos zurück gekommen.

I went to a LOT of effort into repairing a broken Disney Sound Source so I could listen to Nazis dying on my 286.
The problem with rolling out public CCTV to "stop crime" is that it can only detect crimes that have already happened (it's not a preventative).
Similarly, the problem with representative democracy is that "vote the bums out" only works AFTER several years of misrule/criminal malfeasance in office.
Right now Project 2025 is in the driving seat in the USA and *if they don't change the rules under you* you'll get another vote after two years of it.
Public CCTV as you rightly say doesn't do a lot to deter crime. But it does have other benefits:
(1) Perps tend to put their hands up when shown the footage, thus saving lots of money in the court system.
(2) People who are in fact in no danger on the streets (the stereotypical example is the little old lady who wants to go out to the bingo) may nonetheless feel frightened enough of the streets to render themselves housebound, but when they know there's CCTV out there the feel confident enough to go out, with the resulting health etc benefits.
(3) I knew of someone who was arrested near the scene of a crime as a likely suspect (the police knew him of old). But the CCTV showed that on this particular occasion he really had been an innocent passer-by, so they let him go again. Without the CCTV he might well have been convicted of something that, this time at least, he didn't do.
