I think I have my laptop like 95% set up now. I was really hoping to have something native to replace Notepad++, but one thing that became very apparent when I was poking around with Kate and Sublime is that I am very picky about my text editor, more than literally any other part of my computer, and I already have NPP set up exactly how I want it. (And honestly, I needed to get my head around Wine anyhow for when I install Clip Studio, which is the last big thing I need to do.)
Anyhow, time to go snuggle my wife and go eepy, g'night fedi! 
I used to be all about NPP, but I now do everything in VS Code. It's very customizable and there is a vast extension catalog for doing just about anything. It runs on all of the desktop operating systems that I have to work on. I use it for almost all my writing for work, writing in Markdown and then converting it to Word or internal wiki using Pandoc.

I think enthusiasts for the Fediverse underestimate how much a base level of polish and discovery features is what keeps people off of things like Mastodon or Pixelfed versus confusion about picking a server or whatever.
The fact Bluesky — and to a lesser degree Threads 🤢 — are the only things which have gotten any kind of significant adoption by non-tech enthusiasts really speaks to that.
