The gal at the gas station told him "Don't drive that road at night". But Todd dissed her words and went on.
Now he was strapped in the bed of an old truck, looking at the stars and his life pass by, Townes Van Zandt’s music blasting from the speakers.
Without warning, the driver slammed on the brakes. Todd hit his head hard and lost consciousness.
Shouting awaked him. The radio was silent. He could recognize the voice of his kidnapper arguing.
The sounds of a struggle followed. He could not turn to see, restrained as he was. It ended fast with the sound of a body slumping to the ground.
The sound of boots walking in the gravel road toward the truck convinced Todd we was done. A bearded face appeared in front of him. He could not focus well in the dark to make up the face, but the silver blade on his hand was clear.
"Don't kill me please!"
The blade cut the leather straps with one swift move.
"Don't worry. Chuck Norris, Texas Ranger. At your service."
When I joined Fediverse via Mastodon back in ... 2022(?), someone explained to me that Mastodon is a micro-blogging solution.
"My man... you couldn't have been more wrong!", is what I keep thinking whenever I remember it (or see someone posting something like that here)
Fediverse (including but not limited to Mastodon) is like an ancient forum: there are lots of groups of people standing around and discussing important topics, politics, science, sex, make jokes, talk shit...
... and you just listen in into some of those conversations and jump in and out, if you feel inclined to, ... and as long as you behave, this works wonderfully.
So, no, none of this is a (micro-)blogging service. If you think so, than you'll feel very lonely very quickly
Also the orphan source jokes are almost as stale as EMF-the-band jokes at this stage, get some new material.
in all earnestness "here are signs to check for hazardous waste" and a point of contact to get someone out to check would be a safety improvement
although i don't expect another orphan source i would not be surprised by mercury batteries

I love the implication in this article title that britain does not usually produce healthy babies.
Anyway, they now have a way to make children from more than two parents. James Holden is now possible

Healthy babies born in Britain after scientists used DNA from three people to avoid genetic disease
Eight healthy babies were born in Britain with the help of an experimental technique that uses DNA from three people to help mothers avoid passing devastating rare diseases to their children, researchers reported Wednesday.MARIA CHENG (Phys.org)
it is genuinely exciting to think some day that queer parents can have children together….but definitely more important that we make The Expanse possible. 🤭
I mean, I already live in a polycule household that is raising kids together. Now if only we could actually own land 😅

2025: ICE disappears Leon (now 82), lies to family that he's dead, he's actually in a Guatemalan hospital
He did everything right and legal, and ICE disappears him anyway. This is fascism through and through and anyone who supports this is complicit.

Today I saw for the first time a Swasticar in front of me with this "I bought this car before Elon got mad".
And thought: That's a lie. You preferred to not listen, when we told you that he is a sociopath, drug addict, misogynist, transphobe and proud nazi. There were reports about the terrible work conditions in his companies. And about the technical deficiencies of his products.
By the time I was working for a German EV manufacturer, jokes about the problems with Teslas were paramount.
And yet, here you are, pretending you had been lied to. Coward.

Somebody must make "I ❤️ my swasticar" stickers that could be applied to such vehicles when the owner isn't looking.
Eg whilst they're in the motorway service station, having left their swasticar on charge.
@TimWardCam Or at the repair shop, when they thought it was possible to use a carwash with a Tesla
Some models were reported to be unusable afterwards, because someone at Tesla thought, you could "grease" bowden control cables with soft soap instead of fat

Naturalized Citizens Are Scared
“Last month, DOJ released a civil-enforcement memo listing the denaturalization of citizens as a top-5 priority, pledging to “maximally pursue” all viable cases, incl those who are “a potential danger to national security” & , more vague, anyone “sufficiently important to pursue.”
#Trump suggested that targets may incl citizens he views as political enemies, such as #Mamdani”

To become Americans, we promised to defend the laws of the United States. What if defending them now puts our status at risk?Chris Feliciano Arnold (The Atlantic)
There's a concept known as "minority stress," which has only ramped up in the last 6-8 months.
Even if you haven't been directly targeted (yet), the simple idea that you MIGHT be puts you in a constant state of fight-or-flight.
The security of living in a country where at least you felt "doing nothing wrong" meant you'd be left alone has gone out the window.
Every day, I feel tired, scared, distracted, uneasy, sad, and uncertain. It's not a good way to live. It damages relationships, careers, friendships, and so much more.
We should be removing these people from office immediately just for putting people in this situation, much less acting on it.
Jessie (they/she) 🍓 🏳️⚧️ 🍉 hat dies geteilt.
@RobinFriend @IveyJanette
The most ridiculous part? I'm a perfect example of a contributing member of society.
I have a well-paying job with healthcare, a healthy 401k, I own a house (and land), I participate in the local economy, I have friends and family I'm close with, and I check numerous other boxes.
Not that any of that should matter. But none of us are safe. You can do all the right things and still be ousted by a bigoted government. And there's nothing you can do about it bc people aren't loud enough. They're not uncomfortable enough yet.
Hell, half my liberal friends are still humoring their magat parents and just "keeping the peace" over dinner. While they watch their friend struggle bc of the reality those people have created.
Until everyone's ready to speak up, it won't get better.
@CordiallyChloe
> We should be removing these people from office immediately just for putting people in this situation, much less acting on it.
That will require violence that will be resisted violently and disproportionately.
This is 1933 Germany. The correct maneuver for anyone not trained as a SEAL is to LEAVE.
@VulcanTourist
I've been trying to think of how to respond to this bc I've known since you commented it that it feels off.
But basically, this isn't helpful.
"Leave" isn't really an option for most people. And telling a minority that we *should* be scared is a terrible thing to do.
We know what's going on. And we don't all have the resources to do anything about it.
If you want to actually be helpful, start participating in local orgs that assist underprivileged minorities. Offer links and resources and ideas that can help people get to safety.
Just saying "leave" is telling people "go make tens of thousands of $$ apparate out of nowhere, give up your family, friends, and home, and then somehow move to a country where you don't have citizenship."
Give more practical and helpful answers.
@CordiallyChloe
I'm aware what's involved. I've been serious about leaving myself, but my limitations have thwarted that plan so far. That doesn't discourage me from encouraging others to make the plan if at all possible.
> telling a minority that we *should* be scared is a terrible thing to do.
It's absolutely not when it's true. And it very much is.
@VulcanTourist @CordiallyChloe the other thing wrong with this advice is: leave to where? My wife is a naturalized citizen, and she got herself the fuck out because it's a horrible police state where women aren't safe. Guess what America is becoming?
Let's say you flee to Canada, and assume for a second book issues with getting a visa, work permits, etc. Do you know what Canadian politics look like right now? They look a lot like American politics circa maybe 2023? IDK maybe worse than that?
My point is, the political battle against fascism/capitalism is global, and "flee" doesn't get you out of that. Definitely America is worse than some other places right now, and if getting out is right for you, go for it without any shame. But saying "you should run" in a thread where people who are in a precarious position at begging you to fight doesn't sit well with me.
@VulcanTourist @CordiallyChloe I literally knew almost nothing about Costa Rican politics until inspired to look them up by this post, but um...

Seems like under the previous president LGBTQ rights advanced and were decent, but now they're under threat.
You can stop digging this hole at any time.
@tiotasram @CordiallyChloe
You looked for what your bias wanted to find. Costa Rica has ranked as more democratic and free than the United States for DECADES. Does it have blips and struggles? Yes. Every nation does, even Finland at the very top of the list.
If you need excuses not to leave, I'm certain you can always find them. If you stay, you'd better learn some soldiering skills.
You just aren't capable of being helpful, eh? And just gonna keep doubling down on it? You should probably just recluse and leave others alone. Nobody is better off for your comments.
