Death and the Gorgon - Greg Egan

Begrudgingly Yeast (@begrudginglyyeast.bsky.social) on bsky informed me that I should read this short story called 'Death and the Gorgon' by Greg Egan as he has a good handle on the subjects/subjects we talk about. We have talked about Greg before on Reddit.

I was glad I did, so going to suggest that more people he do it. The only complaint you can have is that it gives no real 'steelman' airtime to the subjects/subjects it is being negative about. But well, he doesn't have to, he isn't the guardian. Anyway, not going to spoil it, best to just give it a read.

And if you are wondering, did the lesswrongers also read it? Of course: lesswrong.com/posts/hx5EkHFH5h… (Warning, spoilers for the story)

(Note im not sure this pdf was intended to be public, I did find it on google, but might not be meant to be accessible this way).

Als Antwort auf Ben Curthoys

I'm pretty sure that about 10-20 years ago Egan came out with a serious repudiation of his own ideas about achieving AI through iterated simulations of less-intelligent entities: he noted that implementing it was implicitly genocidal (by murdering all entities that didn't *quite* meet some threshold set by the experimenters, you'd inevitably kill huge numbers of sentient beings just for failing an arbitrary test).
Als Antwort auf Charlie Stross

@Amoeba_Girl @Soyweiser My usual handle when playing online games is "Bickel", because I happened to be re-reading "Destination: Void" at the time that I first signed up my World Of Warcraft account, and killing huge numbers of sentient beings in the pursuit of artificial consciousness was definitely not a problem for Frank Herbert =)

Best tool for creating a basic business website

I'm starting a NonProfit Fediverse powered business called BT Free. I was thinking of making my homepage built on Ghost, but due to some of it's choices, I'm looking for something else.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a self hosted, possibly fediverse powered, software for creating a simple clean efficient business website landing page that explains who we are, what we're doing, etc. I am NOT a designer so something with templates or can hold my hand would be wildly helpful.

I was thinking maybe a static site generator maybe?

Anyone have ANY thoughts or suggestions? Remember there are no such things as bad ideas or comments!

Automatic category/community assignment on received object

I'm wondering how content on threadiverse is automatically assigned its community when received by the software (e.g. PieFed, Lemmy, Mbin). The answer I am expecting is "if the community is addressed (
to
,
cc
,
audience[/cod

I'm wondering how content on threadiverse is automatically assigned its community when received by the software (e.g. PieFed, Lemmy, Mbin).

The answer I am expecting is "if the community is addressed (to, cc, audience), then it is slotted into that community".

However that causes issues for compatibility with microblogs... for example, silverpill@mitra.social recently authored a post that mentioned [swf@socialwebfoundation.org](https://community.nodebb.org/category/swf@socialwebfoundation.org) and it got slotted into that community on NodeBB, which isn't correct since that group is private.

Better practice would be to only trust the addressed community if it is Announce'd by the community directly, but would fall short if my instance does not receive the Announce (say, if nobody follows the community), in which case we'd fall back to "uncategorized", which is where all microblog posts currently go. Then it's neither correct nor incorrect, I suppose.

I think this might be an issue where NodeBB tries to be too many things at once (microblog and threadiverse compatible).

Robots to build Canada’s 9-story timber tower in just 90 days

Mass timer buildings are prefabricated structures made of (hopefully renewable) wood. The pieces are made in a factory and then able to be quickly constructed together on-site.

This can hopefully greatly reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere from producing a building. The cost of producing buildings in this method is also going down. Additionally, these mass timer buildings are typically more dense than single family homes, which can lead to more sustainable communities.

Als Antwort auf aka

Why aren't those windows aligned with each other, this is very upsetting.
Als Antwort auf exasperation

I think it's because the building isn't actually a rectangle shape. It tapers outwards as the height goes up. Agreed thought, the windows not having symmetry is very annoying to look at.

NodeBB is calling https://pleroma.debian.social/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct%3Ajmtd%40pleroma.debian.social with User-Agent and Content-Type headers (curiously, it's not sending Accept, but it also fails if that header is set, so that's irrelevant.)

Navigating to that webfinger url in the browser returns XML, which is :grimacing: but I'm not even getting that when NodeBB makes the call.

Stellar, a very convincing vision of how we can move towards a Solar Punk world.

Just finished the stellarbook, by James Arbib and Tony Seba (from RethinkX). They make a very interesting case on how we can move from our current extractive societies to one of abundance. It touches on many themes that are well known in the solar punk community, still it brought together a clear overview and model of where we are now and how to get to a better world.

I was wondering if anyone here has read it as well. And what your take is.

Als Antwort auf Ruigaard

If I understand you correctly in the part you talk about labor, robotics and AI, it reminds me of what was said by capitalists when automations started being employed in factories, meaning many, many decades ago.

At the time the capitalist narrative was saying to workers stuff like "we know you work hard, but thanks to the technological advancements in automations your children will work less and have a better life". We very well know this never happened, only the rich got richer, to the detriment of everybody else and the planet as a whole.

So, allow me to say, this approach is not new.

IIRC the coordination problem afflicts all engineering disciplines: with large tech projects like the LHC and ITER, costs scale as something like the fourth power of the energies they're working with, and a large part of the reason is that managing the project is insanely difficult. I'd love to see some numbers for how the management complexity of large software projects (eg. operating systems, LLMs) compares to this.

First solar project! Any tips?

Hello! I wanted to do my first project with solar panels and I don't know where to start.

I was thinking of make some transportable solar panel with a couple of outlets where it will be capable of charging cellphones or laptops, not sure if with a battery or not.

Any recommendations of easy to follow guides?

Edit:
Also, what do I need to do a standard plug "type I" (10 A, 220V)

Als Antwort auf Nexy

If you want to charge cellphones and laptops, getting foldable solar panels to charge a battery bank, like a Jackery, should be pretty simple and wouldn’t require much, if anything, in terms of doing your own electrical work.

If you want something bigger, or to do your own electrical work, that can get a lot more involved, depending on the scope of your project.

Zoning Hacking?

Basically, I was thinking of maybe creating capsule hotels/hostels/boarding houses that are engineered for social/communal living, but zoning wise it is likely extremely difficult. This was just an idea, but I was wondering if there are any communities (leftist/libertarian[international, not USA]/socialist/anarchist) that focus on hacking zoning codes/laws to try to help the poor/homeless/oppressed/fight against NIMBYs. This would be for the US as far as my concerns. But others can absolutely chime in.
Als Antwort auf BrinkBreaker

I don't know much about the US, but many places don't have any of that zoning stuff. Ecuador seems to be famous for the lack of zoning regulations, but I imagine that any tropical rainforest country would probably be similar.

In the US, I remember hearing that some people in Arkansas were able to get away with starting up an intentional community and doing all sorts of permaculture things due to the lax zoning regulations. You might research how Arkansas does things.

UK forestry (as far as I've seen) mostly consists of felling sitka spruce and lodgepole pine monocultures that were planted right after WW2 and never taken care of again. As a result the wood is shit quality and mostly goes for pulp/chipboard or biomass.

Higher grades of timber need to have straight grain and less knots, so that is achieved by selectively thinning out the forest maybe every 10 years, and pruning off lower branches. But this adds a lot of man-hours and cost, so I've never seen anyone doing that in UK. Tbf I haven't been around the industry at all since COVID, and the price of timber went up so much maybe things are changing.

Finally A Right-to-Repair Small Affordable Electric Utility Vehicle

The best daily transportation isn't a car/truck at all, but there is still some need for freight/hauling to be done.

I'm posting because this truck feels like the opposite of modern trucks. I mean the CyberTruck (literally the icon of Cyberpunk dystopia) and other trucks like Rivian are:

 • extremely anti-right to repair
 • brag about their 0-60 (instead of practicality/efficiency)
 • a privacy nightmare
 • massive in size
 • have high prices across the board
 • are absolutely crammed with manadory luxury features like air conditioned seats or motorized trunks

This truck, with manual roll-up windows, seems to be about getting work done. Its not trying to be the biggest baddest fastest most-techo-advanced thing money can buy.

I bet, in less than 1 year, hobbyists will have solar panel array mounted on the back of these.

There needs to be processing, manufacturing, and other infrastructure built for the practical large scale implementation of any new technology. That takes time. Bureaucracy can make steps take even longer.
Als Antwort auf ☂️-

The building industry is incredibly conservative. There will be doubts with this about its durability - nobody wants to have to build something again.
Als Antwort auf LuckyPierre

To add to this. If a company builds with this new material and it turns out there's some unexpected issue with the material, the company will be held liable for the damage. They can shove that liability back on the product manufacturer, but only so many can do that before the manufacturer just shuts down. Then the construction company has to foot the bill of a new building, which they can't afford, and thus shut down.

I absolutely hate how conservative the building industry is, but it's a culture that's been born out of harsh lessons and loss of livelyhoods.

Als Antwort auf ☂️-

Probably because there are no long-term tests yet. You can build a house out of dried cow shit if you really want, but is that building still standing in 25 years? We don't know yet and no company wants to be liable for damages if the houses they've built are falling apart. And in heavily regulated countries like germany, they all have to be approved by the government which will take even more time.
