I'm of the opinion that most intra-community arguments over trans issues are trivial and semantic and break down by attempting to apply a universal standard to what are multiple overlapping but discrete groups of people with different experiences and motivations.
I also think cis audiences are largely indifferent to the nuances involved in these discussions, especially the more theoretical ones, which is why big swing universalist arguments are more effective when trying to defend our rights.
There is a tendency to believe a specific rhetorical strategy is what's needed, most of which are centered on a particular set of experiences to the exclusion of others, when in fact, cis people do not care.
We're in trouble because anti-trans reactionaries in politics and media have worked tirelessly to create a permission structure for denying trans identities and rights instead of supporting them, which relies on the strength of taboo and the transphobic social default.
More generally, we're seeing the collapse of a whole host of human rights issues not because marginalized people said the wrong thing or because "woke" turns people off but because the primary political vehicle for liberal rights in the US has betrayed us at every turn.
