Remember the days when software used to be sold with licenses rather than subscriptions?
I don't wanna sound like a curmudgeon, but fucking hell... Every time some kinda cool sounding software comes along, I'm so sick of seeing a subscription tied to it.
Even worse yet when its chained to a server! When that company dies, the software goes with it.
At least with purchased software, chances are? It'll still work for years to come, even after development has ended. #software
When you have to subscripe somewhere to use the software, the chances are high that we are looking for alternatives.
It would be interesting to find out how many people do this, too, and how many just go along and subscripe.

@PeterKReilly ok, so...
Do you know how easy it is to jump from a reply to the original toot and showing literarily the whole thread?
And could we agree that toots with wrong/misleading/unrelated hashtags are worse than toots without hashtags?
Especially in a system where hashtags are important?
And if so, could you agree that your reply is a good example why it shouldn't get the hashtags of the original toot?
And do you still think it should be easy for people to transfer the wrong hashtags to every unrelated/unnecessary reply instead of having the user in charge using the appropriate hashtags by themselves wisely?
I'm already got - without being interested in - on your topic because you tooted it under a false flag and I hope you can see why I don't want it easy for people hijacking not only other topics with unrelated replies but even worse with the wrong hashtags...

Everybody knows DOJ is sitting on a gigantic mass of Epstein evidence, besides the explicit porn collection. There's only one logical reason why they won't release that (non-porn) evidence now, after demanding its release for years before they came into power -- because we've all seen the photos of Trump palling around with Epstein "and the girls" and seen how Trump spoke so glowingly of him during that time.
Yes, we all know why DOJ wants to hide this now, why they keep trying to change the subject. We ALL KNOW -- whether Republican, Democrat, MAGA, or not.
DOJ isn't fooling ANYBODY this time.

Is Earth and the rest of the Milky Way floating inside a giant cosmic void? How a team of astronomers discovered that our corner of the universe might be far emptier than we thought, from @sciencefocus

I would describe it as a relatively quiet rural area.
The nearest town is Mars, but finding car service there sucks. Ask Ekmo.
For those wondering, that picture is not not real. The Milky Way does have “void” looking areas like that but they are caused by dust clouds, not emptiness. You would never seen a far away galaxy in a dark patch like that because the dust would block it.
Not sure why they credit ESO/NASA since this is a photoshopped image. My guess is they took two different images and kind of mashed them together to create an interesting, but unreal image.
This looks like an incredible read, and yet I think I'm afraid to read it. I think it just might break me. I know, intellectually, that this happens to Black kids in the USA (and to some extent Canada too). But something about the injustice, the fact her father was taken away at 15...there are things about this book that resonate deep inside me.
Deliberately-chosen link: the store selling this book at this link is a Black-woman-owned business that focuses on providing books about topics of interest to the African diaspora.
If you're gonna buy the book anyway, how about putting the money in her hands first, rather than chucking it on Bezos' mountain of gold?

I updated FEP-fe34 (origin-based security model):
codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/pul…
The "Authentication" section is fully rewritten. I moved requirements from the "Assumptions" section to sections describing related authentication methods.
Besides that, there is a major change in how embedded objects are treated. Previously, the same-origin policy was recommended. In the new version, embedded objects shouldn't be trusted except for 3 cases:
- The object
of a Create
activity.
- Embedded object identified by a fragment.
- Embedded anonymous object.
It is difficult for a server to guarantee authenticity of an embedded object that was published using C2S API. Such object can be embedded somewhere deep in the object graph, and verifying embedded objects at all levels is not practical.
The previous recommendation was only appropriate for a network where servers don't implement C2S API.
FEP-fe34: Update proposal
- Clarified assumptions and moved them to Authentication section. - Location SHOULD match object ID. - Changed authentication rules for embedded objects. - Fixed incorrect example in Authorization section.Codeberg.org

For trans people, we're living in a society where- by default, we're gatekept and called "insane" for needing it.
For cis people, its generally nowhere near that prejudiced and the stakes are a fair amount lower.
