NVME
Ein SATA oder SAS Controller ist eine Karte, die auf einem PCIe Bus sitzt, protokollwandelt, Pakete auf einem seriellen Kabel verschickt und drüben wieder zurück protokollgewandelt wird und Daten an die Flash Chips schickt.
Das kann man sich auch gut schenken. Dann bekommt man NVME, also "Flash Chips direkt auf dem PCIe Bus". Das stimmt nicht ganz, da ist immer noch ein Controller dazwischen, aber insbesondere bietet NVME viele, viele parallele Queues an, während das bei SATA eher nicht so der Fall ist.
IOPS, Latency
Einen Block auf eine HDD zu schreiben dauert lange, 5 ms oder länger wenn ein Disk Seek involviert ist. Das ist die clat, die commit oder completion latency, die fio (das Linux Plattenbenchmarktool) ausgibt.
Du kannst also ca. 200 Random Writes pro Sekunde von einer HDD erwarten. Du kriegst auch 200 IOPS (IO Operations Pro Sekunde).
Von einer SATA SSD kannst Du, wenn sie sehr gut ist, eine clat von 1/20_000s (0.05ms, 50µs) bekommen. Und auch ca. 20k IOPS.
Von einer NVME SSD kannst Du immer noch nur 20_000 Random Writes pro Sekunde bekommen, d.h. die clat liegt immer noch bei 50µs. Aber im Spec Sheet steht was von 800k IOPS oder gar 3.3M IOPS.
Wie geht das?
Die NVME Spezifikation gibt Dir mehrere Queues, die parallel verwendet werden können – und müssen! – um die vollen IOPS von dem Device zu bekommen.
Wenn Deine Workload diesen Grad an Parallelität nicht hat, weil Disk Operationen voneinander abhängig sind, dann kriegst Du keine 3.3M IOPS von dem Ding. Im Worst Case halt nur 20k.
Von einer Nicht-Enterprise Samsung QVO bekommst Du keine 50µs clat, das ist auch klar. Aber es ist immer noch ordentlich schneller als eine HDD.
SLC, MLC, TLC, QLC
Eine Speicherzelle in einem Flash Baustein konnte einmal 2 Ladungswerte speichern: 0 und 1. Das war auch sehr schnell – SLC.
MLC Zellen können 4 Werte speichern, also nicht 1, sondern 2 Bit.
TLC dann 8 Werte, 3 Bit, und QLC 16 Werte, 4 Bit.
Das wird immer langsamer, weil beim Schreiben der richtige Ladungslevel in die Zelle gebrannt werden muß, dann zurück gelesen (kalibriert) und nachgebrannt wird.
QLC Drives haben also einen SLC oder MLC-Bereich, in den schnell geschrieben wird. Der Flash Controller geht dann heimlich im Hintergrund dabei und schreibt das langsam in den QLC Bereich und macht das schnelle Flash wieder frei. Das merkst Du nie, solange Du nicht mehr am Stück schnell schreibst als dieser Puffer groß ist.
DWPD
"Aber Flash geht doch kaputt!" Ja, eine einzelne Flash Zelle geht nach einigen tausend Flash-Vorgängen kaputt.
SD-Karten in einem Raspi zum Beispiel werden direkt exposed und Writes auf eine SD-Karte gehen direkt und fest auf genau bestimmbare Blöcke. Wenn man da ein ext4 Dateisystem drauf tut, dann dengeln Log Writes im ext4 (oder Syslog-Writes auf die SD) immer auf dieselben Blöcke und das Ding ist ratzfatz tot.
CFexpress Karten und SSD haben deswegen einen Flash Controller mit einer Komponente, die Flash Translation Layer heißt, und die dem Rechner hinsichtlich der Blocknummern die Hucke voll lügt. Du sagst Block #17, aber intern ist das was immer die FTL denkt jetzt dran ist und mapped das lustig um.
Dadurch nutzt sich das Flash gleichmäßig ab und geht nicht sofort kaputt wie eine SD im Raspi.
Man mißt stattdessen Endurance (Durchhaltevermögen) in DWPD, Drive Writes Per Day. Wie oft pro Tag müßtest Du die SSD komplett durchschreiben, damit sie im Rahmen der Garantie kaputt geht?
Dein Home NAS speichert Deine MP3 und Filme, wird also einmal beschrieben und das war's dann. Eine DWPD von 0.1 ist schon reichlich. Enterprise-Zeugs gibt es auch mit 1, 3 und 10 DWPD.
Das sind alles dieselben Platten, sie sind nur unterprovisioniert, also, ein Teil ist schlicht nicht partitioniert. Das gibt der FTL Blöcke zum Spielen und dann geht sich das mit den DWPD aus.
Du kannst auch einfach ein DWPD Keks Device kaufen und dann selbst unterprovisionieren. Das ist exakt gleich.
Du kannst eine SSD nicht durch überschreiben löschen. Die FTL verhindert das – Du kannst physische Blöcke nicht gezielt ansprechen.
Stattdessen kannst Du Disk Encryption (in Hardware, also vom Flash Controller; oder in Software, also von Linux) verwenden. Statt die Platte zu löschen kannst Du dann den Key überschreiben. Das funktioniert sicher.
Du kannst SSD nicht leicht shreddern. Ein normaler Disk Shredder macht die Teile nicht klein genug. Spezielle SSD Shredder liefern etwas, das wie grober Sand, Plastik-Granulat oder so etwas aussieht.
Verwende Encryption und sei das Problem los.
Balance
In einem Storage setzt Du SSD ein, weil Du Speed brauchst (oder Lärm haßt).
Eine NVME SSD ist jedenfalls meist aus Bandbreiten- oder gar clat-Gründen im System.
Sie belegt 1, 2, oder gar 4 PCIe Lanes.
Nun ist das Storage meist ein NAS, der Compute sitzt also nicht in dieser Büchse.
Wenn das Netz also nicht das Bottleneck sein soll, dann mußt Du da passend Netzwerkkarten rein stecken und die PCIe Lanes der Netzwerkkarte sollten die der (konkurrent aktiven) NVME Disks matchen.
Das System muß also balanced sein.
Du wirst in einem Synology NAS mit einer Intel Apollo CPU und 4 GB Speicher also nicht mit 4x Micron 9500 ankommen wollen, denn das arme NAS kann die 800k IOPS pro Micron gar nicht saturieren und das Netzwerkinterface schmilzt Dir aus dem Gehäuse, wenn auch nur eine von den Microns mal ernst macht.
Du wirst in der Syno also immer 1x bis 4x Samsung QVO 4 TB oder ähnlich drin stecken haben, weil die Hardware für solche Drives gemacht ist.

Weil die Kiste trotz der ganzen Software meist eine Load < 1 hat und eine dicke CPU auch dick Stromrechnung macht. Meine Maschine hat trotz der ganzen VMs und Container einen Leistungsbedarf von im Schnitt 45 W (soviel hatte mein QNAP mit 4 GB Intel Apollo und 4x 3 TB HDD auch!).
Das ist ja schön, wenn man sich eine EPYC 5 daheim hin stellt, aber die ganzen Watts muß man ja auch bezahlen und dann weg kühlen.
Bei mir ist es auch kein NAS geworden. Synology wird gerade doof mit ihrem "nur teure Synology branded Laufwerke" und ein QNAP habe ich gehabt, ins OS geguckt und laut gelacht.
Dann lieber ein richtiges Linux, das man auch absichern kann.
Ich habe die Boot-NVME (rl), die beiden SSD (data) und die vier HDD (hdd) in jeweils eine LVM2 Volume Group getan.
Da schneide ich mir nach Bedarf Logical Volumes draus, mit dem Mirroring und Striping, das ich brauche.

Das ist immer ein XFS, weil das als Dateisystem stabile und gleichmäßige Performance bringt (kein Jitter), und das für berechenbare Leistung zentral ist.
Ich habe ein restic, das stündlich nach backup sichert, einen Haufen Time Machines für die Macs im Haus und Backups von Dedis und VMs auf den Platten.
Aller Content liegt auf SSD. Da dann auch unraided, weil, wieso?
Was heißt das am Ende?
SMB schreibt mir bei 1 GBit/s Ethernet in der Tat 110 MB/sec sustained sauber weg. das ist nahezu Nominalleistung.
Das ist auch meine Außenanbindung (1 GBit Glas symmetrisch feste IPv4) und bisher hat das alles gereicht.
Wenn ich das Angebot meines Providers annähme und mir 2.5 Gbit, 4 GBit oder gar 8 GBit gönnte, dann müßte ich im Haus auch das kabelgebundene Netz austauschen (vermutlich gegen Glas) und die Wifi Access Points upgraden, um das weiter als bis zum Modem nutzen zu können.
Und ich müßte sehen, daß ich mehr als 110 MB/s sustained auf Platte persistiert bekomme. Das sehe ich im Moment nicht.
Also bleibt alles so wie es ist, weil es so zusammenpaßt, also balanced ist.
Das ist kein TrueNAS oder sonst eine Software, sondern ein pures minimales Rocky 9 (also ein RHEL), das ich mal upgraden muß. Ich hatte vorher Ubuntu, aber deren SNAP-Wahn ging mir auf den Keks.
Software ist keine installiert, außer dem Basis-System für das File Serving und kvm.
Der Home Assistant hat seine KVM, und für alle anderen Anwendungen habe ich Linux-User gemacht und fahre die als Container im Rootless Podman.
Auf diese Weise ist die Installation leicht zu sichern und leicht zu rekonstruieren und zu upgraden.
Ich bin komplett von NFS oder SMB weg und mach nur noch SFTP, das wird unter den für mich relevanten Systemen wunderbar unterstützt, auch im graphischen Dateimanager, der mir das transparent im Userspace mounted und mir öffnen im lokalen wie entfernten Terminal anbietet.
Ich bin jetzt nicht so der Mac-Fan, aber ich musste mal - aus Gründen - einen Mac Mini anschaffen. Die Kommunikation mit dem SMB-NAS ist ein stetiger Quell der ... äh ... "Freude". Ständig vergisst der die Verbindung und weigert sich dann auch gern mal nachdrücklich, sie wiederzufinden. Irgendwann habe ich den Mac nach Netz-Recherche auf CIFS umgestellt. Das funzt halbwegs.
Bitte macht das nicht! Einfach nur ein SCP Cronjob und sshd auf euren Devices, der dann Text Dateien und Files per Rsync auf Krypto Verzeichnisse kopiert, welche ihr bei Bedarf Clientseitig manuell nach Schlüssel oder Password einhängt.
Es ist so simpel. Nur vermeidet auch eine Indizierung der Dateien oder eurer Bildschirminhalte, durch Webbrowser, A.I., pdf Reader oder Apple und Google Smartphones.
Hätte ich meine ganzen Booking Aktien noch und bräuchte ich ein Petabyte unter dem Schreibtisch, würde ich das in Erwägung ziehen.
Wobei ich was auf einer Messe sah, das hatte 96x EDSFF in 2U, das geht noch weiter. Wenn man da 30 TiB Module rein steckt, dann hat man eine wirklich unangenehme Situation geschaffen.
Da hast Du dann bummelig 3 PiB in 2U und jetzt stell Dir vor, das Ding geht kaputt und offline. Selbst wenn Du ein Backup hast, wie lange dauert der Rebuild?
Gibt PCIe Karten auf denen man U.2/U.3 montieren kann. Aber Achtung: Wenn es >1 drive ist braucht es entweder ein system das PCIe bifurcation unterstützt oder eine Karte die ein PCIe switch enthält. Das macht sich vor allem beim Preis bemerkbar. Solche Karten kann man auch in externen PCIe Gehäusen die über Thunderbolt oder (sehr selten) Oculink angebunden sind. Es gibt auch ein paar wenige dedizierte Thunderbolt Storage Gehäuse die U.2 unterstützen. // @isotopp
Habe U.2 neben der Server Hardware auch in so einem Thunderbolt U.2 Gehäuse laufen. Das hat vor allem den Hintergrund, dass bei M.2 nicht nur der Steckverbinder bescheiden ist, fast alle M.2 SSD sind bei HW und Firmware „consumer optimiert“: Preis plus nichts-aussagende „Benchmarks“ mit Peak-Throughput bei (sehr kurzen) R/W Tests. Einige Hersteller bieten ihre „Enterprise“ oder Server SSD teilw. auch M.2 an, aber als 2280 und techn. bedingt nur mit sehr geringer Kapazität. @isotopp
@RecoveredExpert Mehr Geld ausgeben geht natürlich immer. Im Kontext "Storage für Zuhause" sehe ich eher nicht, dass U.2 da jemals populär wird, genausowenig wie es SAS nie war.
@Lalufu Für zuhause wird das mit sehr hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit nie populär. Das hat u.a. mit dem Preis (Geiz ist geil), und IMHO irreführender Werbung (“peak throughout”) zu tun. Aber auch mit der bewussten Segmentierung des Marktes in dem sich viele gut eingerichtet haben.
Aber die Frage war ja ob’s da was gibt, nicht ob es populär ist. @isotopp

There is some vulnerability with over gerrymandering, and with Texas already gerrymandered, let's hope they really go for it and shoot themselves in the foot.
Seats should be in proportion to the number of people in the states. Redrawing districts for red voters means less people in it and that should result in less seats, not more. Mathematics has already been invented, this is a lame effort to reinvent something in a worse image.
the move comes with risks, according to Politico. If they siphon off too many voters who are safely red to bolster the GOP elsewhere, it could put those GOP districts in play. One thought is that sitting GOP TX members are not happy.
Also, don’t you love how on the one-week anniversary of what killed or disappeared 300 or so TX residents, the GOP is only thinking about their political future.
District maps should be locked in place for 50 years with no possibility of change and then the maps should be reviewed by every federal judge in the region and voted on by the general public.
