I was just watching and listening to a lecture from Zen Buddhist Master Thich Nhat Hanh, and at one point he talks about how environmentalism not only helps "the environment", it helps humanity. Protecting the animals, plants, and resources of our planet protects us as well.
But key to this relationship is that it isn't transactional. The benefit to us isn't necessarily material and quantitative. The benefit is spiritual. We benefit by knowing we live in a society that cares about such things.
