Vor ein paar Tagen bin ich über die französisch-deutsche Grenze gefahren. Da standen etwa fünf Polizisten (Zollbeamte) halb gelangweilt bei der Hitze an der Autobahn und haben kurz in die Autos geschaut, während die Autos vorbeifuhren. Es gab etwas Stau, aber das ist alles eine völlig sinnbefreite Aktion.

I keep seeing people say Elon Musk “failed” in his government takeover.
No, he did not fail.
He shut down investigations into his businesses, he garnered huge contracts, and he stole the personal data of everyone in the US.
That’s not a “failure.” This motherfucker won, and won big.
Lest we forget, Gruber's "interviews" with Apple executives were basically highly choreographed PR events, kind of like those corpo events where an employee interviews their CEO with pre-screened questions. It was nothing but milquetoast, softball questions where everyone knew the self-congratulatory answers before they were even asked.
The fact Apple can't even deal with such a massive suck-up event hosted by their biggest unpaid PR attack dog is far more damning than any of the reporting so far dares to mention.

No.
There are ethical principles *my* fiction adheres to, but "fiction" itself has only one function: to communicate counterfactual propositions to other human beings. As such, it can be created by anyone for any purpose, and some of those purposes I would consider utterly depraved. (Example: "The Turner Diaries" and the genre of nazi manifesto fic it spawned.)
Rowling is a particularly egregious case, I felt like a crazy person yelling on the sidewalk for years before she made it clear enough where she stood on How To Have A Society for people to admit it but I got immediately turned off of her books by how clearly her reactionary and simplistic politics seemed to be displayed.
And that's I think getting at a big reason why bad politics can make for bad novels, especially in genre fiction: if you're imagining entire worlds, but your imagination is so poor you can, say, barely imagine the humanity of wide swaths of people, or completely fail to see the power structures of our world and the problems that lead to and from them, then you're probably not going to end up writing anything very interesting!
@keithzg @DrorBedrack I was interested in how a career author like Charlie Stross may or may not differ from the general public in this respect. There are far, far worse cases than Rowling, John Ringo comes to mind, he committed the only book I gave up on in disgust less than 10 pages in due to overt gross misogyny and racism. Fantasy is a genre that seems to attract the reactionary set more than SF, although the latter has more than its fair share.

How about a one-up on that: LLMs insert between you and the applications, so you don't know what you're using.
It's the 'gateway model'.
Then we'll have LLMs go 'get the best of' those, and we'll pay bundled subscriptions we won't understand, containing things we never asked for, in the name of 'value'.
We forget what we wanted in the first place. And still pay.
I don't know what it says about dev culture that the example Cursor chose to promote on their front page, the example that supposedly shows how wonderful their LLM is for coding, is completely extraneous at *best*.
How did no one with any ability to read code and understand what it does take one look at that example before pushing it to live, and how did that not become an immediate laughing stock?

The Cursor AI Editor is so good, it generates code that is literally useless. In the marketing example at the top of their homepage. If these tools just automate bad decisions and useless code, they're a net-negative for productivity.Mastodon
