"Money can't buy happiness"

But neither does poverty, so thanks for providing me with literally zero actionable advice

Ian M. Mackay, PhD (he/him) hat dies geteilt.

Als Antwort auf Mallory's Musings & Mischief

a little money helps get rid of the things that make you unable to be happy (hunger, homelessness,..). The pursuit of money, often mistaken for the pursuit of happiness, is a sure path to never get happy.
Als Antwort auf Mallory's Musings & Mischief

Happiness is puzzle.
Some solve it now and then.
And, yes, it has little to do with buying power.
Sensations excite us.
Acquisition is merely another sensation.

40 years ago today, the Philadelphia Police Department used a helicopter to firebomb the headquarters of MOVE, a radical collective that was being evicted for what amounted to building code violations. Eleven people died (including five children). The fire eventually spread and completely burned down two city blocks.

Then the remains of those killed, were, for unclear reasons, turned over to the U. Penn Museum, where they sat for decades. share.inquirer.com/m7vjmf

"Despite this dismal success rate, companies are going all-in on AI, driven largely by the belief that everyone else is doing it. Nearly two-thirds of CEOs (64%) say “the risk of falling behind drives them to invest in some technologies before they have a clear understanding of the value they bring to the organization,” according to the study."

I have seen very little significant innovation among large US corporations the last 20-25 years or so.

Their growth in size and revenues(ie now monopolies) has turned them into ossified companies, fully dedicated to protecting profit margins and stock prices with monopolistic tactics .

Wanna know what the ultimate #UK #autism easy spoons meal is?

Mild chicken curry super noodles mixed in with a small hand full of peas, mixed with a chopped up Birds Eye tempura batter chicken fillet. Make sure you put in an OXO chicken stock cube at the end too and mix it in with the remaining water… god fucking damn is it good.

If you have an air frier, you can go from no dinner to dinner in like 14 minutes.

you know what? A lot of people I know IRL are shocked to find out I was home schooled because I’m apparently very good with people.

I didn’t really have many irl friends while being home schooled. Idk how much of that is masking, probably a fair amount BUT:

I also think people underestimate the power of over 1k hours of Garrys Mod DarkRP serious role play 😂 istg I learnt so much about interacting with all sorts of people

I can't stop wondering why everyone is knitting chickens. Frankly, it's becoming a bit of a problem. I can't sleep. I can't eat. I keep THINKING ABOUT THESE GOD DAMNED KNITTED CHICKENS ironicsans.ghost.io/why-is-eve…

What is your favourite pithy saying that is surprisingly profound and that you wished you'd learned earlier?

I have a few:

"Is this a problem to be solved, or a tension to be managed?"

"Trade, don't persuade."

"Never teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig."

"The cucumber gets pickled more than the brine gets cucumbered."

and, of course, my favourite of all:

"The purpose of a system is what it does."

Foundational rule of settings management in UI design:

Make sure the only thing anyone ever wants to change is in the Advanced Settings submenu, and make that as difficult as possible to discover. If it can actually be discovered, put in place a short timeout to prevent the user making the change before the option disappears.

Another brilliant Apple design decision.

Hey, you know those giant glass stairs in the Apple Store? So sleek, so Apple... So cracked. Every one of them.

They should have put a screen protector on these. I don't think AppleCare is gonna cover this.

Apple have some design flexibility: here in Edinburgh, their Store has classic stone steps—glass would probably violate the World Heritage Site planning regs (the Apple Store is on Princes Street, in the middle of a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site).

Augh, I wrote a long post explaining what a news wire is and then accidentally nuked it
Als Antwort auf Charles ☭ says trans rights

Anyway, most of the news stories in your local newspaper are written this way. A news wire has a reporter go do original reporting and fact checking. This is reported according to a style guide. This reliably sourced news item shows up on a feed at the newspaper office. One of the journalists there rewrites to fit more into their house style and maybe add in a local angle or some additional information. And that's most of your newspaper. Because doing original news gathering is super expensive.

You may have heard of the AP, Reuters, Bloomsberg, or the AFP. But there are also loads of smaller wired like Court News UK, which covers things like dental tribunals.

There are also video news wires.

Meet Bode's (M81) and the Cigar galaxy (M82).

The larger M81 passed the smaller M82 quite some million years ago, leaving it deformed. This also causes the dust and gases inside to collide much frequently, making this a starburst region where stars are born at a much higher rate than usual. This also causes the ejection of the bright red hydrogen.

For this image I took ~14 hours of RGB data and another 10 hours of just the hydrogen. I still struggle a bit with star shapes in the corners, but nothing BlurX can't fix.

Probably my last #astrophotography before the summer break.

I'm sorry, but the absolute last thing I want is a #Pinterest clone done by #Google. They only want to launch a clone so they can destroy Pinterest and then cancel the website leaving users hanging.

Just like they've done with every other fucking thing Google has launched... other than Gmail and Google Docs.

Wait, WE paid for those 54 Afrikaners to be flown here with all their shit? On nothing more than lies and Preznit Dumbfuckistan's delusions and his weird obsessions where he grabs on to a thing — groceries, toilets (where he spends a goodly amount of time sitting on them, and probably poopin’ in a solid-gold one at his rotting old golf hotel), Greenland, etc. — and absolutely will not let go of it.

Some assholes fed him a story about how badly whites are treated in SA and predictably he got all up in a tizzy and ordered this ridiculous and expensive transfer of "refugees" (sneer quotes mine).

Of course, it was all bullshit. It's always bullshit with these idiots.
