[ RESOLVED ] With oksh because I set the EDITOR variable from hx to nvim, this contained the word vi in it and the shell presumed it would work in vi mode. So to resolve I had to put in my .kshrc after the EDITOR is set set -o emacs and logged out and back in and my default editor is now neovim and ctrl r aka reverse search works again.
Now that is weird !? As you know I'm using the oksh shell, and I've recently switched back to #Neovim. So this evening I thought I'd change my EDITOR="hx" to nvim and the same for VISUAL . I then logged out and back in, and discovered that my ctrl r function stopped working so no reverse search. If I revert those back to hx and log out / in then reverse search works. Now I'm confused ??? Will this mean I might have to go back to my old faithful bash ?
Wow! You're right. I have oksh on one server. Can reproduce. Usually EDITOR is "emacsclient". If I set it to "vi" Ctrl-R, Ctrl-P, et cetera stop working but I do get vi commands instead. Type ESC and then hjkl starts working for moving the cursor, et cetera.
Yeah well I typed in a terminal set -o emacs when EDITOR was set to nvim and I got reverse search back. But if I put it in my .profile or .kshrc it didn't help , still no reverse search.
According to the oksh man page, "If set, [$VISUAL] controls the command-line editing mode for interactive shells. If the last component of the path specified in [$VISUAL] contains the string “vi”, “emacs”, or “gmacs”, the vi(1), emacs, or gmacs (Gosling emacs) editing mode is enabled, respectively."
If $VISUAL is not set, the same behavior applies to $EDITOR.
You can override this by using "set -o emacs" (or "set -o vi") explicitly.
