Fedi, it’s your lucky day! You get to recommend me a Linux distribution to install on a partition of my new AMD Framework 13 laptop.
I’m much more comfortable with dpkg-based distributions than rpm-based ones. I have no favourite desktop window manager.
I will be using it casually, dual booting with Windows 11. Bonus points if it handles suspend well.

I'm listening to Brian May's guitar solo in Queen's "Somebody to Love" and realizing how much I've subconsciously copied his style, or at least tried to
he so often plays these classical, major-diatonic solos
it sounds like he wrote it on a trumpet and transcribed it to a guitar
very few bluesy bent notes
Man I do this *all* the time too

Question to all the #KDE users out there. On Gnome I use this extension to improve battery life: extensions.gnome.org/extension…
It allows to set charging limits, e.g. to keep the battery charging level between 60% and 80%. If the charging level is reached and the Laptop is plugged-in, it runs completely with the power from the plug and saves the battery.
Does something like this exists for KDE?
that's a built-in functionality of #KDEPlasma
It can be found in System Settings under:

→ Power Management
→ Advanced Power Settings

Once again @pluralistic has managed to distill into once sentence something I've had trouble finding the words to explain. I'll be stealing this one!
> "The classic leftist distinction goes: leftists want to abolish a system where 150 white men run the world; liberals want to replace half of those 150 with women, queers and people of color." pluralistic.net/2023/09/05/not…
See also: Why I refuse to be labeled as a 'Liberal'. (I'm not a 'Leftist' either, exactly. But I'll leave that for another toot.)
The first thing to understand about USA politics is: everything is shifted one slot to the right.
Forex, Democrats aren't wishy-washy 'Liberals' really. They are more like a European Center Right party. What Europeans call 'Liberals', we call 'Socialists' and what Europeans call 'Socialists', we call 'Communists'.
The founding fathers of the USA tried to create a system hostile to political parties. In the end they created a system favorable to only two parties.
When I lived in Europe (where there are actual left-wing parties), I found it comical that Americans thought the Democrats were “left-wing”.
Now I live in the US, it doesn't seem comical at all.
But Trump & friends now claim the Democrats are "far-left radicals”: absurd, but many Americans seem to accept the new lie as uncritically as they accepted the previous one.
Meanwhile, the American right has gone far-right, but still pretend to be moderates.

It seems that a few people are being misinformed about the deprecation of the X11 backend, usually because they read screeds from well-known bad faith actors.
The X11 backend being deprecated mainly means that we're not going to spend time implementing new features, like dmabuf, graphics offloading, or Vulkan support. X11 support will still exist until GTK4 is EOL, which will happen once GTK *6* is released. We're talking about a 20 years horizon, at this point…

A think people miss about Ghandi is that he and his activists didn’t merely march in the streets.
They took mass direct action. They non-violently shut down facilities and dismantled procedures directly relevant to the operation of the British empire.
It is civil *resistance*.
For it to work, the thing you are peacefully doing needs to directly undermine their power and authority.
The idea that all they did was march and write strongly worded letters is liberal propaganda. They shut down railways. They openly flaunted the British salt monopoly. They sewed their own clothing both as a symbolic protest against western cultural norms AND because it undermined the British textile industry.
Obviously, doing that would be very illegal. As were the things Ghandi’s people did. It is not safe to do.
The reason people march holding signs that accomplish little instead of doing that is because it is ostensibly safer.
And the reason it is safer is because it isn’t nearly as threatening to the ruling elites.

Theologin: Katholische Kirche trägt Mitschuld an religiösem Trump-Kult

Admittedly they're not running particularly new hardware (mostly Haswell era) but as long as your machine is older than the newest Ubuntu LTS it should be just fine

Downside is that it's gaming-centric, so there's a lot of focus on that specific kind of plug-and-play.
Otherwise ... I've heard good things about Elementary OS, and Mint.

I wouldn't go for an Ubuntu derivative like Mint, Pop, or elementary, just because (despite those all being very good distros in every other way) having an extra level of indirection in the packaging process means that they can get very, very out of date.
