It’s time for the RENAISSANCE SPORK!
And the fascinating problems museums face when dealing with objects no one expects. 1/?

Sharing for my countdown to the release “Inventing the Renaissance” coming Feb UK/Mar US buff.ly/4j6qkoS #HistoryPix

Als Antwort auf Ada Palmer

This is a real Renaissance modular transforming spoon-fork, with a spoon cavity that slides on and off of the fork tines using little metal grippy brackets. It’s nifty. And no one believes such a thing would exist in an era we mostly think of as having less silverware than modern times 2/?
Als Antwort auf Ada Palmer

This is far from the only unexpected weirdo object in the Bargello museum, which a friend of mine calls “Florence’s attic,” the repository for all the peculiar Renaissance clutter that is neither painting nor sculpture, and no tourist really expects to see. 3/?

I’ve been teaching Irregular Billy—one of the ten centimeter tall Pictsies that live in my pantry—to read and write. She’s a fast learner and also has a flair for cooking, so we collaborate on shopping lists.

“How are we off for tomatoes?” I ask from the kitchen

“Two cans, missis, and a jar of squashed ones”, Billy calls back from the pantry.

“Spaghetti”?

“None left, except a box of fett you cheeny”

“It’s pronounced oooo, lass, and thanks. All right I think that’s it”

“And a box of Tiny Teddies, ifn ye please, the Kelda asks”

“Special event?”

“Kelda from number twenty coming overmorrow for tea and netflix!”

I need to get two more shirts for the start of school this coming week, and despite the first day being Wednesday, the school uniform shop's opening hours continue to be more or less 'Every third Thursday except on a full moon, when we open between 1 and 3am'

(that's hyperbole, of course, but suffice to say they're not at all convenient opening hours for people who have other obligations)

Als Antwort auf Bec

ISTG every school-related venture is still wedded to the notion that there’s always a parent (let’s be real, a mother) who has no other commitments other than to foster her offspring 24/7. It’s like 1975 again.
Als Antwort auf Deborah Pickett

@futzle Right? Note the trading hours this week, which are 'extended' despite not opening at all tomorrow

Where are all those individuals, agencies and forces now who took an oath "to protect the nation and the constitution against enemies from outside and inside."? 🤨

This coup is like someone just walks casually into a bank and takes all the money without the need of any weapon - and no one resists or even cares.

What is the origin of the word "mainframe"? Digging through archives, I traced it back to 1953. The IBM 701 computer was built from "frames": power frames, a storage frame, a drum frame, and the main frame. This 1953 drawing from the Installation Manual shows the dimensions of the "main frame". 1/n

Some unknown Chinese brand.
The drawback for that use case is that you can't keep it on for an extended time, it overheats.

I wonder when the US Congress is going to do something about the "do what you did to Twitter to the Federal government" stuff. Are they still alive in there? What's up? Should we turn Congress off and then on again?

Als Antwort auf Anthony

Space junk guy was not confirmed by Congress. His role doesn't exist. Why are high-level officials--who were approved by Congress--even complying with anything he demands?

Something stinks about that.

I ran Yunohost for nearly a year. The number of times I had to get a shell open and fix something was too many. Yunohost is basically a set of scripts to configure a Debian machine, so if you don't mind fiddling it's probably fine. Cloudron is containerized and basically handles all the 'glue' for you. I've never had to manually fiddle with anything, although it provides the means to.

Mass demonstrations in #SanDeigo against #ICE and in solidarity with immigrant workers targeted by Trump last night were attacked by riot police in heavily armored vehicles with tear gas, after protesters rallied and occupied streets with flags and music for hours. Photo via /omartineztj.

let be clear, i'm totally against trump and gop.

however, i advice against such demonstrations, and especially with ordinary smartphones or gadgets. trump administration is already out of control, and may track and surveil demonstrators. and penalties might be draconian.

use other methods, like social media and internet.

Pretty wild to watch the best soft power (USAID) just disappear. I wonder if that role will end up being served by the military directly now.

Last spring I was doing some work with USAID folks. Good people doing things in the collective interest.

I will never forget that this is what Americans voted for. Not by accident. Not for the lolz. Not as a protest. On purpose. And yes. I know “not all Americans.” I know that many Americans on this site, in particular, opposed him. But not nearly enough of you. You have declared economic war on us, your most loyal ally and trading partner. You have torn up trade treaties and a century of friendship over a lie. There is virtually no fentanyl coming over the Canadian border. And very few migrants.

What?! Since when is it illegal to choose not to advertise through a certain outlet?

We know how it will be recorded. Bad. The end of the USA hegemony, started with Raygun, ended with Drumpf

It strikes me that all the people who are like "OMG anarchists, how can you possibly run a society without laws and cops and prisons, how will you ever stop the bad guys" had better start listening to the actual answers because those are going to be our most effective tactics going forward. None of the apparatus of power is going to be on your side.

Als Antwort auf Sally Strange

none of these things "stop the bad guys" in the first place. "stopping the bad guys" isn't a function of the state, if it was prisons would be full of cops, business people and politicians.
Als Antwort auf refraction

@elexia And yet you probably lock the door to your apartment, despite most lock of the market being trivially defeatable.
Als Antwort auf refraction

@elexia What I'm saying is, while it is easy to abuse systems intended to protect citizens, without those systems there's basically no recourse for very common crimes.
Als Antwort auf Sally Strange

@elexia Saying that we have "basically no recourse" right now is disingenuous.
The danger of the law going after a criminal absolutely is a deterrent. Without it, there would be far more crime.
Als Antwort auf Arina Artemis

@arina @elexia Have you ever tried to go to the police for help when something was stolen from you? I have. They do nothing. Meanwhile, in the USA, "civil forfeitures" (aka cops stealing from ordinary people) keeps pace with or exceeds the value of criminal theft for decades now. Most people who are murdered, are killed by someone they know for personal reasons. But of those murdered by a stranger, 1/3 of those strangers are police officers.

Dems don’t need to be more like Trump. Trump is not and was never popular. He got fewer votes in ‘16 than Romney did in ‘12, he barely got more votes in ‘24 than he did in ‘20 (when he lost).

If everyone who voted for Biden had voted for Harris, Trump would have lost. If everyone who voted for Obama had voted for Clinton, Trump would have lost.

Trump doesn’t win, he’s never been a popular candidate. The Democrats just lose to unpopular candidates by doing even more unpopular things.
