Folks, this is explained in the lyrics! Mother nature, who is also single, pushed all the angels out of heaven in an act of solidarity with single human women who can't find perfect guys.
Presumably she also caused them to stop being angels. It sounds kind of troubling actually.
I love this song because it has a whole narrative explanation, telling a story, but its really not about the story. The words and sounds of the refrain are the most important part of the song. The verses have a rather a lot of word painting (a musical term I just had to google which means the pitches are following the lyrics, so as they talk about barometric changes the pitch rises and falls accordingly) but the verse words themselves are there to set a mood more than literally understood. The song exists for dancing.
But it also does contain answers to the questions it raises.
I strongly suspect the song was written by somebody employed by a label, with the sole aim of making money for that label. And it does show that grimy system, with the worst goals, is still full of people who absolutely excel at their crafts. There are a lot of great disco songs and this one ranks among them.

However, I couldn't find a section in the paper where it's claiming that only the men were hunting. (Of course I might've missed that, too.)
