@Lkdc at this instant I can't find it, but there was the animal model experiment using a U-shaped tunnel, I forget if it was for influenza or measles or what, which I think was much earlier still!
I expect you remember the wave of "how did we end up rejecting airborne transmission?" news pieces; it still boggles my mind that after those easily understood pieces, there are still airborne deniers and minimizers in positions of power, from frontlne nurses, doctors, and admins to top political offices.
