Over on BlueSky, authors are sharing their #unbound horror stories. It’s awful. So much worse than I imagined. It’s Alan Dean Foster vs Disney all over again.

Unbound went into liquidation and immediately a new company, Boundless, popped up. They now own all of Unbound’s assets … and none of its debts.

There are so many authors owed tens of thousands of pounds each. Many of them have no other source of income and this represents a year’s worth of royalties.

I supported several books through Unbound, bought others, and borrowed some from my library. Seeing how they’ve shafted so many people out of so much money, I’m really feeling like I participated in this scam. It’s awful. I’ve lined the coffers of management at the expense of the authors.

For those who care:
Unbound (my original publisher) went into administration in March, owing me about £8k.
Boundless (basically the same managers) "bought" Unbound for almost nothing, including all its stock of books and publishing rights.
Boundless then sent promises to pay what Unbound owed.

What lessons can we learn about the fact that MCP got more adoption as a quasi-open standard in a few months than the entire fediverse stack has in nearly a decade? (Or two, depending on how you count.) Obviously, they’re in different domains, but there are some parallels. How might other open efforts piggyback on hype cycles like AI to bootstrap open efforts we could use to re-open the social web? Who’s integrating MCP interfaces into the ActivityPub stack?

I don't know a ton about MCP, but that seems like apples and oranges in a way. Isn't MCP primarily being promoted by AI shills and Microsoft? That feels like a few noisy entities rather than actual widespread usage. Fediverse is actually used by a ton of different entities. And more importantly, from what I've seen of the fediverse community, it doesn't want adoption (which in this case would be takeover) by FAANG/AI companies.

I would guess places like M$ are making it look like widespread adoption because that helps their bottom line and paying back the money they burned on AI. Hard to do that on the Fediverse.

@mez there are far, far more devs building things independently on MCP right now than ActivityPub. And you can do stuff with it that has nothing to do with any LLM or commercial vendor.

Yeah, I'm with @mez here. It seems like a mismatched comparison. I have not seen any use of MCP outside of connecting LLMs to existing tech.

I have zero interest in connecting my social network to big tech anything, and in fact, I've gone out of my way to prevent my own server and posts from being crawled. Isn't this why a lot of us are here? We want something we control and have a sense of agency over?

We can learn that it is probably not useful to compare technology that has billions in desperate investor cash behind it to something that's trying to build its way up from grassroots in a way that might produce a pretty good outcome while not being remotely investable.

I'm not sure the comparison is interesting or useful. MCP is mostly a place where companies can put some money to satisfy their investors unhinged demand for doing AI shit.

It's also trivial to implement, and it doesn't even have to work all that well, because the other end is a text synthesizer that will not understand you no matter what. In AP, the other end is another person that you're actually trying to communicate with.
