Another good news story for safe vaccines. The RSV vaccine RSVpreF (Abrysvo) was evaluated using a test-negative control study in a high-risk general older clinical population (>60 years) with a lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) episode requiring hospitalisation or emergency department visit.
Two control groups were defined. 1. Strict. LRTD testing negative for vaccine-preventable disease VPD) due to RSV, HMPV (just in case the vaccine produces cross-protection, SARS-CoV-2 and positive for non-VPD pathogens. 2. Broad. RSV-negative regardless of detecting another microbial cause.
The Abrysvo vaccine effectiveness (VE) using Strict controls was 91%, and using Broad controls was 90%, which closely agrees with a previous smaller study (RENOIR). The authors note this new report better represents the severe end of disease in older adults.
With this VE, one severe outcome could be prevented for every 250 vaccinated people in the first season after vaccination. How immunity wanes over time remains to be seen, but this is a great start. It's a group piece featuring friends from my Discord Server - Anoroth's Fishtank. It's a public server that I started out a few years ago as yet-anorther-artist-server, but.. it grew and is very active! It has become a tight-knit community of very lovely people. Nibbled on it since December 2023. The process looked similar as in regular illustration - except here I had 20+ people which all their separate wishes. It was a big chellange and I am very happy I managed to pull it off, especially with all happenings inbetween. AND especially that I went the madman way and made it a painted piece xD I can really understand now why people usually make group pictures in simplified lineart style haha. My main aim was to make it as lively as possible, and have characters look integral and not like stickers.
