Another good news story for safe vaccines.
The RSV vaccine RSVpreF (Abrysvo) was evaluated using a test-negative control study in a high-risk general older clinical population (>60 years) with a lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) episode requiring hospitalisation or emergency department visit.
The Abrysvo vaccine effectiveness (VE) using Strict controls was 91%, and using Broad controls was 90%, which closely agrees with a previous smaller study (RENOIR). The authors note this new report better represents the severe end of disease in older adults.
With this VE, one severe outcome could be prevented for every 250 vaccinated people in the first season after vaccination. How immunity wanes over time remains to be seen, but this is a great start.
Of the 280,000 severe cases annually, 1,120 could be prevented in older adults.

While Earth's canyons can form through water erosion, that's not possible on the Moon. Instead, scientists think that they were caused by a giant impact on the Moon 3.81 billion years ago, cracking open the landscape in less than 10 minutes.
