How to use Mastodon as a Facebook replacement by Mark Meisner - Version 1.2, 2025-02-04 Are you wondering how to get away from Facebook (FB), but still want to keep in touch with actual friends and family? It's not easy. The "network effect" keeps people on FB because that is where their friends and family are. But, if like me, you're sick and tired of all the ads, privacy violations, algorithmic enshittification, and general bloat of FB, not to mention its toxic leadership, then read on. There are many alternatives to FB, but I want something that is ad-free, private, not centrally controlled, open source, and flexible. For that reason, I'm going to suggest Mastodon which I have been using for a couple of years. But to be clear, Mastodon does not have all the same features as FB. On the surface, Mastodon appears more like Twitter than FB in the sense that anyone can follow you and posts are brief. But with two simple changes to your Mastodon settings, you can restrict who can follow you to only people you approve and you can change the default privacy setting of your posts to only be seen by your followers (or not). Again, don't expect the same features on Mastodon as on FB. The main limitations of Mastodon are comment threading and post length. Depending on the server you join, posts can be restricted to 500 characters, so you have to keep things brief. But you can add photos and videos, as well as audio. Also, Bluesky has something like 100 times more funding than Mastodon, and that funding comes from Bluesky selling itself to VC investors.

Those VC investors aren't charities, they are buying the network with an expectation of massive profits, which will have to happen through exploitation of users ("enshittification").

Mastodon hasn't sold itself to anyone (and cannot due to its structure), so it isn't on a path to exploit users.

You cannot have your cake and eat it. Centralisation and VC money comes at a horrible long term cost.

If you want a network resistant to Musk-type takeovers, Bluesky isn't it.

The only network which cannot be easily bought out is the Fediverse (which Mastodon is part of). This is the place to be if you want a different kind of future.

I know not everyone cares who owns their networks, but if that's the case why bother leaving Twitter or Facebook?

Many Pixelfed servers have an Instagram import feature that lets you import a certain amount of Instagram posts into Pixelfed. However, due to the unprecedented numbers of new people joining Pixelfed recently, a lot of Pixelfed servers have temporarily switched off the import feature as it uses a lot of server resources.

Keep in mind that almost all Pixelfed servers (like almost all Fediverse servers) are run by volunteers who personally pay the costs of the server, they don't run ads or sell people's data. They may simply not have enough money to enable the import feature when so many people are joining. You can help your server cope with the influx by donating to the person who runs it, you can ask your server admin how to donate.

If it's unclear when importing might be switched on, you can perhaps ask your server admin about it. This is especially easy to do on smaller servers.

Also note that if you do want to import your Instagram account, make sure you have downloaded the JSON archive from Instagram. Do NOT use the HTML archive, it won't work.

@Pixelfed Unofficial Help I know you might not have the knowledge, but have you thought making your pixelfed posts more insta-like? Like, you can create multiple pics with one sentence on each of them, and have the user swipe through them. I think it would look cleaner in a way :D

You could do something like:
Pic. 1:
A white background with the text having the color of your choice: Wanna import your account on Pixelfed?
Then a screenshot neatly framed below the text and an arrow to the side of the screenshot pointing to the right, indicating there are multiple other pics if the user is interested.

Pic. 2:
A pic with the white background and the text having the same color as on pic. 1 with the text:
Step 1: do this

Pic. 3:
Same as pic. 2:
Step 2: do that

And so on for the next pictures, probably with some screenshots as on Pic. 1 if needed, resized and/or cropped, but in a way that the text/content is still legible to the users.

It's tricky because although I set up the account to help Pixelfed users, for some reason most of my followers on the account are on Mastodon 😆

So... still not sure whether to format it in an Insta kind of way, or in a more traditional social media kind of way, because the way the posts are displayed depends on where people are following me from.

This is new to me, I will try to experiment, thank you so much for the detailed suggestions 😃
