Mass demonstrations in #SanDeigo against #ICE and in solidarity with immigrant workers targeted by Trump last night were attacked by riot police in heavily armored vehicles with tear gas, after protesters rallied and occupied streets with flags and music for hours. Photo via /omartineztj.

let be clear, i'm totally against trump and gop.

however, i advice against such demonstrations, and especially with ordinary smartphones or gadgets. trump administration is already out of control, and may track and surveil demonstrators. and penalties might be draconian.

use other methods, like social media and internet.

Pretty wild to watch the best soft power (USAID) just disappear. I wonder if that role will end up being served by the military directly now.

Last spring I was doing some work with USAID folks. Good people doing things in the collective interest.

I will never forget that this is what Americans voted for. Not by accident. Not for the lolz. Not as a protest. On purpose. And yes. I know “not all Americans.” I know that many Americans on this site, in particular, opposed him. But not nearly enough of you. You have declared economic war on us, your most loyal ally and trading partner. You have torn up trade treaties and a century of friendship over a lie. There is virtually no fentanyl coming over the Canadian border. And very few migrants.

We know how it will be recorded. Bad. The end of the USA hegemony, started with Raygun, ended with Drumpf

It strikes me that all the people who are like "OMG anarchists, how can you possibly run a society without laws and cops and prisons, how will you ever stop the bad guys" had better start listening to the actual answers because those are going to be our most effective tactics going forward. None of the apparatus of power is going to be on your side.

none of these things "stop the bad guys" in the first place. "stopping the bad guys" isn't a function of the state, if it was prisons would be full of cops, business people and politicians.
Als Antwort auf refraction

@elexia And yet you probably lock the door to your apartment, despite most lock of the market being trivially defeatable.
Als Antwort auf refraction

@elexia What I'm saying is, while it is easy to abuse systems intended to protect citizens, without those systems there's basically no recourse for very common crimes.
Als Antwort auf Sally Strange

@elexia Saying that we have "basically no recourse" right now is disingenuous.
The danger of the law going after a criminal absolutely is a deterrent. Without it, there would be far more crime.
Als Antwort auf Arina Artemis

@arina @elexia Have you ever tried to go to the police for help when something was stolen from you? I have. They do nothing. Meanwhile, in the USA, "civil forfeitures" (aka cops stealing from ordinary people) keeps pace with or exceeds the value of criminal theft for decades now. Most people who are murdered, are killed by someone they know for personal reasons. But of those murdered by a stranger, 1/3 of those strangers are police officers.

Dems don’t need to be more like Trump. Trump is not and was never popular. He got fewer votes in ‘16 than Romney did in ‘12, he barely got more votes in ‘24 than he did in ‘20 (when he lost).

If everyone who voted for Biden had voted for Harris, Trump would have lost. If everyone who voted for Obama had voted for Clinton, Trump would have lost.

Trump doesn’t win, he’s never been a popular candidate. The Democrats just lose to unpopular candidates by doing even more unpopular things.

Yesterday afternoon I responded to my inner paranoiac by doing a trial mix of the title for the second sideSister album. It was a fun learning experience.

The first and most important thing is that, yes, I can turn what we have into something that "sounds like a record". I had been a bit unsure about this, given that the approach we've taken to recording this album is quite different from any process I've used in the past.

After applying clipping to individual drum kit elements (which allowed me to reduce their actual volume while retaining their impact), I turned my attention to the bass.

I tried a new technique for me, parallel processing the bass, with one channel bumping the pitch up an octave and applying a saturator to the result before merging with the original. It only takes a little of the octavated bass to provide definition; the original delivers the gut punching. Nice.

Als Antwort auf elsemusic

This is a fascinating idea, and I'm going to try it on the bass for Leave the Light On, because the bass needs more ... something, I think.

I feel like the Overton window has shifted massively to the right, and is still shifting faster and faster. It scares me that fascism is now normalized enough that they’re just dropping the pretense completely.

I’m not just scared because of the US but also because of Germany, in Germany the conservatives have recently broken the taboo of collaborating with the AfD, and are embracing vile racist rhetoric more openly than ever. The next federal election is in 3 weeks, and the conservatives will most likely win it by a landslide. It terrifies me. It feels like it’s obvious that we’re far beyond the point of no return (here, in the US, and probably in many other places too), fascism is considered “normal” now.

Als Antwort auf undead enby of the apocalypse

I’ve been rewatching the alt right playbook, which is a really amazing series of videos on YouTube which analyze the rhetorical strategies of the right, and some of it feels terrifyingly relevant right now (like “the death of a euphemism”), but the scariest part is that some of the videos have kind of lost relevance because the right no longer needs to obfuscate their vile ideologies that much any more, and because society has shifted so far right that it’s no longer as necessary to isolate a person to submerge them in fascist rhetoric, we’re all being submerged in fascist rhetoric just by being part of society.
Als Antwort auf undead enby of the apocalypse

@enby_of_the_apocalypse Agreed. Any attempt at pretense has been dropped. Have relatives in Altenkirchen and Cologne and friends in France and Italy. They're all terrified. Watching developments in Europe closely. Canada has an election soon. The only thing that might prevent a shift to the far right is a deep-rooted Canadian dislike of being lumped together with Americans. The Conservative leader is seen as a Trump/Vance wannabe. That might spare us, maybe, perhaps, possibly...
Als Antwort auf Picasso

I feel like all the shit happening in the US is giving conservatives in europe permission to move further right. They’ll move as right as they can while still maintaining the perception that at least “we” are still better than America. And now anything short of doing nazi salutes on stage is considered “at least better than America”.

I think the talk I gave with @tsyesika at FOSDEM today is maybe the talk I've had most people say they enjoyed that I've ever given. It was basically a "ten minute comedy sketch lightning talk, with purpose"

Sadly the recording / stream apparently failed to get the camera on us, which means you're going to miss a lot of it, because a lot of the humor was in the emoting on both of our ends

It's pretty easy. You just have to become a ruling party politician or an oligarch and they will solve this in no time.

So now add this up, NYTimes: International hostility; financial (to use a mild word you might use) impropriety; cruel inhumanity; no oversight. It adds up to totalitarianism; fascism. See it. Say it.

On the one hand, I'm happy these people are resisting fascist ideology.

On the other hand, why are they still working for Meta? They're forking over private data of people who have had abortions to the authorities.

Wouldn't the right to do be to quit on the spot?

What would you do?

mashable.com/article/mark-zuck…

Als Antwort auf abolitionkelly

yes, the best thing to do would be to quit on the spot. But for most people that would mean losing your income, your health insurance, leading to losing your home etc etc etc. Capitalism sucks. Also... It's generally easier to find another job while you have a job, so I don't blame people for doing what they can to sabotage fascist efforts while looking for a safe way out.

On Trump's orders, officals released water from two California dams - Los Angeles Times latimes.com/environment/story/…

Vink agreed, saying that given how dry it has been in the region this winter, there was no need to make such a release. In fact, he said, farmers were counting on that water to be available for summer irrigation.

This is an important issue.

Right now, PornHub has a huge percentage of this kind of traffic, so it's a great opportunity to come up with a way that safely keeps underage people off the site. Block them and the traffic will be split to sites that care a lot less about following the rules, for both the content and consumption of that content.
