Sometimes it is enough to sit on your own in a sunny field and think about happy things. Not always, but sometimes.

"Another farmworker, Gabriel, who came out to speak, brought a backpack full of yellow envelopes containing all his tax documents over the decades.

“These are my taxes. I have been paying my taxes for 19 years, without rights,” he said, as he pulled out each envelope and threw them on the ground in front of the podium. “I’ve been doing this year, after year, after year. For a promise that I would get my citizenship, this is my testimony that I am not a criminal. We are not criminals.”"

Most if the existing rules and ways of our societies don't allow for our existence as nonbinary people.

So, bend those rules until they fit or until they break.

Don't wait for permission to exist. We make space for ourselves.

Superman has always been, by a large margin, my least favorite superhero. I've always found him stiff and vague--more an idea in a suit than a person. A lot of other DC heroes are great, but I never got Superman, or what people saw in him.

I saw the new Superman movie.

I get it now.

Als Antwort auf Doc Impossible

This movie is why I loathed all the DC Universe movies. They're why I haaated all of the other Superman movies except the first one.

They made the movie be about trust and kindness, before anything else, even when--and after--they're betrayed.

*That* is a Superman I can love.

Relating to superheroes has always been a problem for me. Even more recent marvel ones--they're all spectacle. Few of the problems they face are really human-shaped.

Honestly, only Jadzia Axelrod's Galaxy and Hawkgirl treatments have really felt personal to me.

I guess what I'm saying is this:

This is the first superhero movie that left me going, "Yeah, that's how I'd do it." Right down to being too trusting of people. Kindness, as the real superpower.

The Superman movie saved superhero movies for me, same way Dreadnought saved superhero stories for me.

Als Antwort auf Doc Impossible

I really appreciated your writing about dreadnought in the past. I never really got Superman, either. I saw another person on mastodon say it was great, too. I might have to give it a chance!

For me, I got sick of the marvel movies pretty fast. They seemed like the same movie over and over. The last superhero movie I liked was the Batman with Pattinson. It wasn't fantastic, but it seemed realistic in a way. I just kept thinking "a person walking around in a goofy costume like that, doing the things he does, has to be more than a bit off." The way the cops reacted to him, the way he was obsessed and self isolated, and the way the villain openly related to him, especially over wearing a mask, just seemed so appropriate.

Als Antwort auf Doc Impossible

I wrote a YA book with a character like this based on my own experiences & how I reacted. I was told it was unrealistic & no one is like this. I wondered why it was so difficult for them to believe in. As that was me. I was right in front of them. And often they hate seeing it in others, makes them feel bad about themselves.
The fact is, this kind of love for one another takes massive courage in a world that doesn’t believe in it, & doesn’t think it’s either real or realistic…
Als Antwort auf Jo with elbows up & chin up

Even when they see kindness it in front of their eyes. People doubt and mistrust. Think you have ulterior motives because so many people abuse that. Or they just don’t see it. Or discount its value. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but that’s a story line too that should be explored. It’s often people you love most, that turn on you over ego, need to compete, failing at even equality…
Als Antwort auf Jo with elbows up & chin up

Or try prove it’s impossible by making things difficult for the hero, try to make them do a heel turn, to justify the idea that it’s unreasonable to be kind. It takes so much integrity, courage, sense of self, and love for one another to do right in this world. And humility to control all that power and not abuse it!

Really looking forward to this movie.

I love Superman bc of Christopher Reeve’s version.
Everything I hear abt this one gets me excited.

Als Antwort auf Jo with elbows up & chin up

@JoBlakely Yeah. I try--and fail, but I keep trying--to be kind to people no matter what. I've been burned so many times, but it's so worth it.

It's hard as fuck, though.

Als Antwort auf Doc Impossible

So hard. So very hard. It hurts. I’d like to see more of that emotional hurt on superman. That feeling of loss. Grief.
But worked through.

You know, I think this finally gives me an answer for why I liked Iron Man 3 so much. Seeing Tony struggle with PTSD and agoraphobia as a result of the wild ass shit that the Avengers had been through really humanized him.

I think it’s also why Tom Holland has been the best Spiderman. He’s just a kid, dealing with some really fucking serious shit.

@twipped same. Everyone hated on Iron Man 3, and I think it's one of the better in Marvel's Phase 2.

Happy Gotcha month, Sitara! Thanks for the video link to your party. Skye was such a good guest wearing her party hat. 🎂

We're starting in about 15 minutes.

I think this is the beginning of the end for our campaign. As it has been planned from the beginning.

We've proved to be extremely difficult to kill. One of our party sacrificed himself for the rest of us (he was already mortally wounded and unable to be moved), and another . . . well, it's complicated. But she is no longer with us in her original form.

Anyway . . .

My medic now has a shotgun. Incongruous? Perhaps. But she can at least do damage now.

@nazgul @Lazarou I bought mine from the book sales they used to have in schools. Cheapest binding ever, and the paper was so acidic it crumbled into a pile of crispy dark tan sheets. Loved the story though! I even named my old 1976 Suburban "Richard the Deep Breather."
