I read a critique during the metaverse hype about how much work it is to even render a single bowl of popcorn. That games really limit where your player can stand because rendering everything from all angles is impossible, making the more open words of the metaverse effectively impossible.

Finally added the 3rd server to my cute homelab. And decided to upgrade the setup with a 4 port KVM switch, so I can watch the log entries flying by with a bit more comfort. It had to be the Greathtek GHT-S7415H-02, because that one has the right size to fit in my 10" rack. Should arrive Monday. Now to design and print a holder for the screen and keyboard.

Only thing that seems to have stuck is custom roblox clothing and fortnite experiences. Haven't heard anyone mention either NFTs or Metaverse in agency land for a while.

What is most astounding to me is that there don't seem to be any academic papers. Like what are we doing in universities if not engaging with criticality? IF all we do is cheerlead ,maybe we deserve to have our budgets slashed to ribbons.

I can’t really give much of an opinion on the academic side of things, but the longer i work in tech the more I’m aware and exasperated that people will just keep building stuff they think is bad and unnecessary.

So, I don't see any algorithmic reason the metaverse couldn't exist.
What I see though is that the whole metaverse thing was based on landlord speculation on a virtual space that is infinite. It's artificial scarcity. Everyone saw how ridiculous it was.
And almost nobody wants to finagle a VR headset or voice chat and all that junk to do something that isn't a fun game. You can just text your friends. It's so much easier.
So yeah, I think it was user experience, not algorithms, that killed the metaverse.
