Most shoppers have watched people do this for years, and yet fail to reproduce the same motion (and also push things right up to the scanner, placing them in the area of the scanning volume with the lowest chance of being able to read the bar code). It's not just natural phenomena, people are often oblivious to things that other people are doing for them.
