I still vaguely remember compiling Vim 8 from source because Mac only shipped with Vim 7.4 (actually I think I compiled it to play around with gvim but that also got Vim 8 as a bonus)
autocmd's probably safer, yeah. But I dunno, I don't like the idea of having stuff for specific files in our vimrc, it feels like not the right place for it. And there's other files that need this too, like /etc/crypttab... and really any config file that contains a whitespace-separated table.
But yeah, Security. Dunno how much to actually worry about that. Like, if someone can get a nasty modeline in a root-owned config file, then we've got bigger problems!

@quixoticgeek It'd be GREAT until the very first time a Russian oil tanker dragged its anchor across the top of one of its access hatches or ventilation shafts or [insert other infrastructure here]. Or drops a mine on it (shades of the Nordstream 2 sabotage).
Those cities are 500km apart, so about 10x the length of the Channel Tunnel; it's not going to be practical to secure its entire length against attack.
