SocialHub developer community: Reboot or Shutdown?

@how is urgently asking members of this community to brainstorm and consider options to keep this community not only alive, but make it thrive as one of the grassroots developer centers that help evolve the fediverse.

So, either way the change is coming. I’d rather have it come in a structured way.

In 2019 @how and Petites Singularités graciously took custodianship of SocialHub, and I for one am very thankful for that! I am sure many in the fediverse developer landscape share that gratitude too.

For people reading this and considering community involvement.. when does P.S. plan to give public announcement / responsible disclosure of SocialHub winding down?

It seems contentious to claim that "most developers have left" when the forum continues to show activity. In the past month, 44 topics have new posts, the majority of which are not federated topics. Who are these developers, have they really left, and does their leaving justify shutting down the forum? What is the alternative venue or forum for discussing ActivityPub-related topics, community, software, standards, etc? Does such an alternative (if it exists) provide a better experience for discussing these things?

If the answer is "they're on fedi now", then this is what I would categorize as "scattered to the four winds, and there's no replacement". The value of SocialHub is that it is a gathering place for these discussions, and it allows for those discussions to be long-form. There is a world of difference between a forum thread and a chain of replies in 500 characters or less. This has been previously discussed as well:

The value of this SocialHub forum is in bringing people together to discuss things, and the introduction of federation in its current form has been arguably counterproductive to this end. Quite simply, if the discussions about ActivityPub are spread all over random pockets of microblogging, then this is an inferior experience to a proper forum with an actual social context. You can aggregate a bunch of microblog posts, but that's not the same -- the focus just isn't there in the same way that a real thread would remain mostly focused on the same topic. Replying to something is not the same as having a directed discussion. Every new reply is a chance for the topic to drift away from where it started, and if all you have is a reply tree, then you can't recognize these shifts.

What then? Do we converge on the w3c/activitypub issue tracker, or on the SocialCG mailing list? Or is the discussion around ActivityPub dead, and all that's left to do is have ad-hoc communications between various devs without any sort of coordination or commonplace? Maybe that's fine for the developers who have supposedly already left, because what's the point of having conversations when all you're trying to do is fix a one-off incompatibility between two projects? I don't think it's conducive to any sort of broad alignment, though.

At the end of the day, if the financial and organizational sponsor wants to back out, then we can't really do anything to force them to continue, but I think it's more worthwhile to consider the reboot rather than the shutdown. We can't easily fold the scope of this place into the issue tracker, because issue trackers are not general discussion forums. We can't easily fold the scope of this place into the mailing list, because this place was started to avoid flooding the entire SocialCG with ActivityPub-specific matters. So ideally something ought to occupy this niche.

"Scattered to the winds" is also my observation. Anyone noted the new HTTP Signatures proposal to the ActivityPub community? Maybe by coincidence or by having a good 'following' collection. Or maybe because I created a cross-reference as a commons janitor. It means now at least there's archive that it happened, though the content of the discussion may already be gone, link-rotted as happens on microblog timelines.

What does it mean to be federated as a forum? That is what I mused about in the fragmentation discussion, and I formulated a Need:

Support the communication and cocreation of all participants in the ActivityPub ecosystem to help foster healthy growth and evolution of the Fediverse.

Note there is not the word "community" here. It is the vaguest term when it is just dropped casually. What is the "FOSS community" for instance? I claim it doesn't exist unless you use "community" in most handwavy terms. Long ago as facilitator I came to the conclusion that SocialHub was not a community, but just a discussion forum. And that though that is a shame, that still is valuable. These discussions are in the archives of this forum.

What should we do?

In order to be able to talk about "community" it has to be well defined what that entails ..

Collect problems that hold the AP dev community back from collaborating and evolve the foundational technologies that the dev ecosystem of the fediverse relies on.
Collect the challenges SocialHub faces to address these problems.
Refine the Need above, breakdown into more granular needs and find other requirements for a prolongation of SocialHub on a healthy trajectory.
Let people and groups thereof, like @strypey before (please boost his call to action), step up and announce themselves
I propose everyone to step up to prepare a Community Plan consisting of ..
- Wiki post (such that it bumps the list upon edits) with a summary of the plan.
- Separate discussion topic referenced from the wiki post, to discuss details of the plan.

Objective: Convince @how that responsible custodianship is taken care of, and it is responsible to hand over these tasks to the new community custodians.

Listing some needs and requirements that SocialHub always had, or for a long time already ..

Reach the AP dev community, connect people for focused discussion.
Provide insight in ongoing discussions such that others can chime in in real-time.
Keep record and archive that can be searched, quoted and cross-referenced.
Provide entry point to the ecosystem where newcomers can discover, onboard themselves.
Become native to the fediverse. SocialHub is to be part of the fediverse via federation.
Help guarantee a bottom-up (commons based), open and decentralized ecosystem.
Be a helpful tool to allow the FEP Process to fulfill its custodianship role for FEP's.

On diversity @jdp23 I would add that point 5 equates to the diversity of the fediverse itself (iff 'federation-done-well') and that point 6 acknowledges the need for a decentralized developer environment, where there can be many independent dev hubs furthering AS/AP et al. This notion promotes diversity in itself, and SocialHub in this setup does not take an authoritative position nor gatekeeper position.

The diversity problem + challenges then boil down to 1) the diversity that the microbloggoverse fedi and its moderation processes gives, and 2) how forum federation / threadiverse is able to forge community on top of that (as a well-defined concept) using the fediverse social graph where ecosystem participants and prospects (newcomer onboarding) engage.

And that brings this to a mighty interesting applied research area, on the basis of which alone a SocialHub reboot might be a very worthy undertaking. As mentioned above both @strypey and me in that fragmentation discussion were wondering:

Federated discussion forums are like collaborative gardening centers where a group of fedizens gathers together around a theme and fosters a curated garden of relevant information and connections to other groups and people to interact with, have insightful discussions and deepen relationships, and to enrich the collective knowledge base together.

From a more technical perspective you might consider Federated discussion forum software to constitute a collaborative / multi-user ActivityPub client with dedicated management features for content curation, aggregation and moderation.

What is a viable plan, what is a viable community then? Well, again my opinion, but there is no need at all to be broadly interesting, relevant to a large group, or targeting the entire dev ecosystem. A community team may choose any niche area to focus on. It is up to them. Viable in my book means first of all:

There is a team willing to take the commitment, and @how approves on the (transition) plan.

After that happens then I think it is important that the new team has free reign to do whatever they want to forge healthy community in whatever direction, scope and audience they want to serve/

I'd personally definitely reposition, and can imagine many different directions that might be interesting for a community to explore..

"We want to emphasize the 'social' in social hub, and give minority group a stronger voice in the developer community. We will actively reach out to developers other than those 'from the West' who dominate the scene."
"We will focus on the C2S side of the fediverse, which we consider to be the path to future of social networking."

Great point @trwnh. Here's a recent example of how SH has been used. @claire, a member of the Mastodon team, came here to consult with devs from other projects about plans for federated Quote Posts in Mastodon, with an eye to documenting their approach through the FEP process (created here). The topic was created in Feb this year and constructive discussion is ongoing 5 months later. To me, this alone demonstrates that SH is useful, and worth saving.

Sounds great. I really like all the aspirations you lay out above, although it does make me realise that SH has a potentially huge brief. So it's hardly surprising the forum has only realised a fraction of its potential so far.

Oh and I know @jdp23 and I have a tendency to butt heads (most recently on the SocialMusic forum). But they make some fair points in this thread, and ask a good question here;

To me, this is not a 'one and done' process. The nature and infrastructure of SH has been negotiated and altered before, and no doubt will be again.

What we're trying to do right now, under urgency, is to put together a transitional team that can keep the lights on until at least the end of the calendar year. While we figure out more permanent solutions for;

hosting: both admin work and funding for any upstream costs
community management: moderation, outreach, conflict resolution, etc
governance: active stewardship to ensure that both of the above continue to be taken care of. In ways that facilitate the SH mission; being neutral ground for devs to parlay about pan-fediverse concerns

Once we've made arrangements to keep SH from blinking out of existence, I'd really like to see us put together a survey to send out to all fediverse devs. Past and present, of servers, clients and other tools. To find out if they've used SH, whether they still do, what they consider useful about the way it's been operated, and what would make it more attractive as a place for them to interact with other devs.

These are not aspirations for one community, certainly not of SH (though opinions vary here), but ideas for different directions. SocialHub started out in a great position as literally the tool that SocialCG used for communications between the dev community regarding ActivityPub standardization. Then SocialCG went dormant and SH was the only active hub for a time.

From my time and experience as founder of Humane Tech Community I learned that having too large a scope and audience means you can only have a discussion forum run by staff, and not what you can meaningfully call a "community". At SocialHub I made various calls and put much effort into having people state their level of commitment and interest, and the outcomes were very clear: SH for a long time was just a discussion forum, where devs can conveniently read stuff on their subject of interest, and reply to them. That's it. No community at all. And in itself this is a perfect raison d'être for SH to exist. But we should be fair about it then, and accept SH for what it really is.

Later on, if anything, the custodianship of the FEP process is the only well-scoped true 'community-level activity', and that role might be further established (i.e. the "guarantee open ecosystem" mission and "bottom-up standardization process" vision), if there are folks interested in doing so. Yet here @silverpill - the currently only real active FEP facilitator - does not see merit, and is open to do everything in the codeberg issue tracker of the FEP (which I doubt is a good idea, but that's a different discussion).

In any case, in follow-up to @trwnh, looking at the #standards:fep category, a decent amount of good discussion takes place on SocialHub. And it is feedback we can still consult and respond to, contrary to all the FEP communication that shifted to the microblog timelines, where that feedback is all lost unless explicitly linked to. This makes the FEP more of a "do whatever you want" thing for any dev to spec just enough features for their own app, without much rigorous scrutiny from the dev community at large wrt improving general interop in the ecosystem.

That’s quite a lot of things and generally enough to justify the forum’s continued existence rather than shutting it down. Of course, that doesn’t solve the (potential?) sponsorship issue being posed here that is necessary to answer for that continued existence.

Generally I'd define viable community as:

A viable community is where enough of its members care enough for its continued existence.

And with that care are committed to step up and help guarantee that existence. Very often this boils down to more or less the 90-9-1 rule, where one percent of members takes that responsibility seriously.

Currently in separate thread(s) and wiki post(s) we can gather what it takes to continue as-is, what problems are that led to current need for a reboot, and what ideas exist for fresh new directions. I'd advise using wiki post to summarize stuff (this thread for example is already 23 posts long and only TLDR's others). And it'd be great if @how could assign forum moderator or even forum admin privilege to some people so they are enabled to organize and steer this thing along efficiently.

Admittedly I'm only a hobbyist ActivityPub developer, I've been toying with a little implementation on nights and weekends for a few months, but I wanted to chime in on the "None of the developers want this, they've all moved on" sentiment and say:

I know community building is under appreciated, difficult, work. So if you haven't heard it enough, thank you to those of you involved in making this place run.

(Generally speaking it matters a lot when people speak out their appreciation for a commons based initiative they benefit from. There's an imbalance in our fediverse culture I think where people, often from the sidelines, are ready to pounce with unconstructive criticism. Leaving little room where fertile seedling can mature into strong trees. I regularly say it leads to an environment where "we divide ourselves to be conquered". We need a more forgiving culture, where there is acceptance that not everyone is as perfectly principled and valued yet, and there are shades of grey through which people can be guided gently into the light.)

I talked to a handful of ActivityPub developers about this over the weekend in Vancouver. All of them turned out to be in the "Most developers have already left" category that @silverpill was talking about above. I don't want to name names -- they can stand up for themselves if they want to -- but I got a bunch of views on why SocialHub has had little net-benefit for them and what they are working on.

I believe it's also true to say that while there are developers new to ActivityPub all the time, who want to build and are building stuff, they generally don't end up as regulars here.

For me, the question of "who administers the server" and "who pays the bills" are minor questions that can be solved without much difficulty. I'd be happy to contribute, too.

However, the real question is: how do we (for some value of "we") meet the needs of our "customers" (for some value of "customers"), so they value it and engage and come back and contribute. Because if the customers leave, clearly the value isn't there -- and to be frank and consistent with what I heard, I don't have the impression that this goal is at the top of mind of too many people here. Some other goals appear to be, and is fine, but we should not be surprised at the above consequences.

From my perspective, I want as many developers as possible build as much open social web software as possible, consistent with the values, and to do that, we need to treat potential developers as customers and understand what they want and need, and address that. Ideally, this would include -- in an nicely designed integrated whole:

An ActivityPub landing page for developers (e.g. a revamped activitypub.rocks -- in progress)
Extensive, maintained, consistent reference material and examples (currently all over the place, hard to use as a new developer)
Places where to ask questions and discuss (e.g. a forum and/or a chat group)
Online and in-person seminars with "howto" demonstrations or discussions of particular issues
Development tools (e.g. debugging, testing) -- some of this exists, also all over the place in various states
The ability to easily find developers of other applications to resolve interop problems with specific other applications.

Beyond that, for "advanced" developers, we also need debate of extensions and mechanisms (FEPs and the process around them) to further the state of the art.

I believe this is the time to design such a "developer journey" to get them to great interoperating software as directly as possible, and I'd be quite willing to help with that. It doesn't make much sense to me to look at the Socialhub forum in isolation and I would not know how to "fix" it in isolation.

But that's a much larger issue that needs it's own topic (or several). SH can't be part of any integrated effort if it vanishes beneath the waves in September.

Generally speaking it is easy to come up with lists of things that would be helpful to the dev ecosystem. Much harder it is to get people to collab and connect their otherwise independent initiatives, and still harder it is to find people doing the chores to maintain that.

As an example is the need for having comprehensive developer documentation. On SocialHub is still a pinned wiki post with an attempt to crowdsource enough notes for such an artifact. Another example is when @gabek started fedidocs crowdsourcing attempt, and I posted about the need for cohesion in Cohesion of FediDevs with other fediverse initiatives. Fedidocs stalled, migrated orgs, became fedidevs and then stalled again (I think). Why? People don't like to write techdocs in the best of times, and are happy when they have things well in order on their own project. Even less people want to arrange the crowdsourcing process, and editing/publishing chores.

Generally speaking one should not fool oneself talking about "community" when there isn't one. The AP ecosystem is characterized by fiercely independent people who opportunistically come together to talk about subjects of shared interest.

The general tendency in this thread is that SocialHub better offer a broad range of services to become a relevant community again. And I think people underestimate how hard that is, in this environment of individuals.

Positioning advice: Choose between 'community' and 'cohesion'.

My strong advice to any community team stepping up is to first choose between 2 options:

Wanna be a community? Better cover only a comprehensive niche then, with a well-defined audience and scope. See my list with some quickly brainstormed topics as examples. Then foster community.
Otherwise best be a loose collective. Fit for a grassroots environment. On any broader scopes + audiences forget "community", it herding cats lost cause. Find ways where people while working on their own initiatives still combine that into a larger, more valuable whole. Then foster cohesion.

It goes both ways. There are a lot of interesting discussions started here and not elsewhere. It all contributes to the grassroots ecosystem at large and helps evolve the fediverse. The AP dev community has a broad range of opinions, ideologies, values, things they find important. And all across the ecosystem there are various independent initiatives where people can find their peers, and join groups they feel most comfortable to be with. It is a good thing, that. It helps stimulate the overall diversity of the ecosystem, and resilience of the fedi movement as a whole. If there's sustained custodianship of SocialHub, and a dedicated community team, then SocialHub is viable.

Es ist erschreckend wie viele Bausteine aus der "gut bürgerlichen Küche" ich im örtlichen Großhandel finde. Tasse Milch, ein paar Beeren (optional, nach Saison) und ein Löffel Pulver aus dem Karton und Zack, fertig ist die Schlemmercreme für 5,90 €.
Der Karton (ergibt 200 Portionen) kostet dort ca 15 € zzgl. Steuer, da musst du dann schon echt hochwertige Beeren nehmen, dass du überhaupt einen Euro Gestehungskosten hast.

DIY experimental Redox Flow Battery kit

The guys at Flow Battery Research Collective have been designing a Redox Flow Battery development kit that you can build yourself using a 3d printer and a few tools. It's a desktop size flow battery that you can use to either do your own research, e.g. on different electrolytes or just to replicate their experimental findings.

Redox Flow Batteries have the potential to become grid scale or home electric energy storage solutions that are way better for the environment than current lithium based batteries. They can often scale power and capacity independently and allow for repairs.

The FBRC project wants to spread the knowledge on RFBs and help kickstart a global community that develops sustainable energy storage technology in an ope source fashion.

Beware that the project is still in its infancy and sourcing the materials can be a bit of a challenge. Be sure to ask around in the forums for help!

For DIY flow batteries, the most accesible electrolytes are usually iron sulfate and potassium ferricyanide - both are relatively safe and can be ordered from science supply shops without special permits (unlike vanadium compounds used in commercial systems).

Diese systematische Selbstüberschätzung ist charakteristisch für Dudes, die glauben, sie können trotz Inkompetenz die Welt beherrschen. Das machen sie natürlich, um Geld zu sparen – an Menschen. Menschen gehen woanders hin, wenn du ein scheiß Chef bist oder deine Infrastruktur eine Katastrophe. Vibe-Coding Tools hingegen lügen dich nur an. Diese Tools werden zu Ausreden-Generatoren: Anstatt kompetente Entwickler zu bezahlen, wird die eigene Unfähigkeit an Systeme delegiert, die selbst vor ihrer Unzuverlässigkeit warnen und inkompetent sind. Das Ergebnis sind Geschäftsmodelle, die auf systematischer Verantwortungslosigkeit basieren.

Ich bin selbst kein großartiger Entwickler. Aber selbst mir ist klar, dass man so definitiv NICHT entwickelt. Wer seine Produktionsdatenbank nicht vor seinem eigenen Staging-System schützen kann, sollte keine Software entwickeln. Wer KI-Tools verwendet, die explizit vor ihrem Missbrauch warnen, disqualifiziert sich selbst. Ihr setzt mich ja auch nicht in eure Firma und lasst mich an der Datenbank und dem Produktivsystem herumspielen.

Beim Coden und Technologie betreiben geht es nicht um „Vibe“, nur weil einige Gruppierungen, die sich um Tools und Infrastruktur kümmern, einen Vibe haben. Die Katzenohren-Nightcore-Emacs-Fraktion ist genauso ein Klischee wie die Furry-Community – letztere betreibt faktisch kritische Infrastruktur. „All modern communication would collapse if about 50 people, most of which are furries, decided to turn their pager off for a day“, formuliert ein Tweet pointiert. Die Furry-Community ist überproportional in der IT-Branche vertreten, von Apple über Google bis Amazon arbeiten sie in Schlüsselpositionen. Der entscheidende Unterschied zu pseudo-professionellem „Vibe Coding“: Diese Leute setzen voraus, dass man direkt mit dem Code arbeitet, die Maschine versteht und bewusste Entscheidungen trifft. „Vibe Coding“ ohne fundierte Kenntnisse ist keine Innovation – es ist Kapitulation vor der Komplexität moderner Systeme. Und diese Kapitulation gefährdet kritische Infrastrukturen unserer digitalen Gesellschaft.

On a personal note, I expect the Foundation to become a reliable source of post-'22 human-made work for the same reasons I stated Newgrounds would recently:

An explicit ban on AI slop, which deters AI bros and allow staff to nuke it on sight
A complete lack of an ad system, which prevents content farms from setting up shop
Dedicated quality control systems (deletion and rewrite policies, in this case) which prevent slop from gaining a foothold and drowning out human-made work

This is such a valuable insight! There are 2 extremes in decentralised social app dev, one where an app is just a dumb terminal for a particular server, and then the inverse, pure P2P apps with no server. But there is a middle ground. Apps can be a focus of UX development, and access different servers as needed to provide functionality that's impractical (if not impossible) to do with pure P2P networks.

What if we "Liberate people from clients, apps and servers"?

If the "fediverse facilitates online communication and social interaction between people", then the ActivityPub protocol specifies how to implement an abstraction on top of servers and clients in order to provide "a distributed network of addressible actors for the exchange of social activities". This abstraction no longer relies on the notion of servers and clients, though for certain social networking use cases you may opt to re-introduce them (.. but then they live as concepts in this higher level of abstraction).

I may bring an additional more top-down design perspective into consideration and to ideate on, but please let me know if that is better addressed in a separate topic.

What if we "Liberate people from clients, apps and servers"?

Though conceptually the ActivityPub spec didn't prescribe this, the dominant abstraction for "joining the fediverse" in the present day involves "select an app, select a server that hosts your app of choice, and use a client that supports that app, to access it". In other words, currently fediverse offers a predominantly app-centric view of the world. But this need not be the only view that is supported, and I advocate a shift towards having a fediverse of mixed apps & services, and elaborate a service-oriented view e.g. as a compliant AP protocol extension.

In the service-oriented view - and in a paradigm shift towards app-free computing - there wouldn't necessarily be "Instances" as we have today, but parties that are positioned as fediverse access providers. You can compare this to the telecom sector, providing the plug in your house to deliver TV, phone and internet services at your doorstep.

When relating that to a good software with ActivityPub C2S support, I can envision that people after gaining access and becoming fedizens, can easily discover, obtain and wire services together in interesting ways that support their social networking use cases and needs. And dynamic UI/UX that supports that, based on service configuration and protocol (control) data exchange.

I put together a quick flyer for us to print out for tomorrow's Good Trouble Again protest. (Find events near you on the map at their website!)
It was made in Krita (Scribus probably would've been better, but I didn't have time to learn it), using graphics from old IWW pamphlets.
It recommends:

"How to win" is not "Just Do The Thing".

Building community and local organising is a pre-requisite to any sort of collective action. The idea that that somehow comes after a general strike is mad.

All resistance starts between people who know each other. Talking to your neighbours, helping each other out, sharing tools and skills, etc, are all required before you can be all "join the one big union and go on perpetual strike".

If you, as a person, cannot organise a community garden, you cannot organise a general strike.

Ah, I realize now that, at least on voyager, cross posts don't seem to show the post body contents.

If you click through, you'll be able to see the second page (that is supposed to be on the reverse side) that briefly covers community building as well.

I have the general strike as step two since it made sense to explain what it is immediately after mentioning it, and how it goes hand in hand with unionizing.

At least in my area both unions and a general strike are completely unknown concepts to most people I mention it to, so I wanted it to be clear what they are, though I wrote it while fairly sleep deprived, so I'm sure it could've been done better.

Ultimately this flyer is intended to just get people started down a good path. I could only fit so much without it likely becoming overwhelming and not read, and still fitting on a double sided page.

If you know of a pamphlet that would guide people on these topics better than this one, I would welcome changing mine out for that.

If the intent is to get people started down a good path, then it should focus on first steps, which is community organising.

The people who are already open to unions are already in them. Because of 50 years of neo-liberal shite people do not understand class consciousness and view themselves simply as isolated, powerless, consumers.

You can break that view of themselves through community efforts - like gardens, allotments, etc - because they demonstrate their own abilities to themselves, and how working together benefits us all.

And then, you can start pushing for more official efforts and organisation.

These topics are also discussed often on Slrpnk.net, which I encourage readers to take a look at and join, in the hopes of exposing them to more in-depth discussion of those topics and people who they can talk to about it.

Again, in my personal experience in my area, I have met an astonishing amount of people who genuinely have no concept of what a union or general strike are, so for them, the lack of knowledge is most certainly a big barrier.

Sure, I don't disagree with that.

What I'm saying is you've structured this like an instruction manual, but have the steps in the wrong order.

In my experience with local organising (I'm a trustee of the local foodbank) doing the actions in the order you've laid out would cause the vast majority to disengage immediately, and I live in an area with higher than average unionisation and left wing tendencies.

You know that for a general strike to be successful it has to be massive - 10s of millions of workers - and in effect for a very long time. For that to be possible, people need to be secure in their housing, their access to food, and to heat. If any of those fail, the strike fails.

For those to be a success, parallel power structures - mutual aid, etc - need to already be in place.

So, if you want to structure this as a 3 step instruction manual, my recommendation is that it's

Create local security for food and housing
Join One Big Union
Strike until you win

If I had time to redo it, I do think that revised order would be more ideal.

I would be pretty surprised if the current order will render it completely ineffectual at informing people of those concepts, and any who do flip it over and read the poorly named step 3 will find that it recommends building community for a general strike to be successful.

That's when the UAW's (a large union) contract ends, so the plan is for all unions to plan the ends of their contracts for the same date.

It is admittedly a long time to wait, but due to how little of the US workforce is unionized, I assume it's to give time to build up more unions and gain momentum?

Prefiguration is often understood as purely performative. "Behaving as if". For example, in Temporary Autonomous Zones that do not challenge existent power nor deal with the conflict coming from outside the prefigurative bubble.

Doing politics within history, resisting the urge to put yourself outside of it. No escapism, no coping, no otherworlding. So, "reforming" is quite a loaded term so I wouldn't use it to avoid confusion. One way to explain this is "double system theory", namely the idea that a successful transition between two systems (any kind of system, not just social or political systems) happens only if the dismantling of the old happens in sync with the growth of the new and this growth can fulfill the needs of its participants better than the old. Anything else will eventually fail.

If you build a new system without fueling it with the resources that go to the old, you will be a cathedral in the desert that will eventually be abandoned to return to the old system. A lot of utopian communes and prefigurative politics might fall into this category. Also the idea of building socialism in a single state (the new) without dismantling global power structures that will eventually coup your country.

If you dismantle the old without building the new and therefore fulfilling the needs the old was fulfilling, you will encounter a lot of resistance. These are the forces of reaction during revolutionary struggles, for example, where revolutionary states end up compromising a lot to appease the needs of the population, or get toppled by entrenched interests.

How do you see everyday people participating in this political movement - voting? canvassing? running for office?

Everything goes. Politics must be played with the full deck of cards. Find the points of leverage, understand what's the best form to apply such leverage and go for it. Sometimes voting, sometimes armed struggle, sometimes structure-based organizing. This is a subjective decision that must be done from the inside: this implies that I can speak for my own strategy and the strategy of my orgs, but I must suspend judgement on the strategy of others. No outside means also "no outside of my experience".

I guess you see Mamdani as such an example? Tho I doubt anarchists would reject him just on the grounds of him being a reformist and therefore not valuable to the cause, in my experience any push towards a more socialist society is generally embraced and not rejected no matter where it comes from.

There are for sure a lot of novel elements in Mamdani and in what NYC-DSA is doing, even though they are still a very old-fashioned organization in many regards:
* full embrace of structure-based organizing, which is not new as a practice, but its resurgence often frames this as the primary source of power.
* pragmatic communication
* hostility to purism and sectarianism
* general disengagement with leftist infighting, including their own internal conflict with the national. They go their own way, they use their points of leverage, they lead by example.

I mean yeah that makes sense - but I've personally not seen examples of prefigurative building that have rejected funding and resources from the old system on ideological "purity" grounds - quite often the reason is that established systems just refuse to funnel resources into alternative systems that don't generate a profit.

As an example - I was involved in a waste reduction/swap shop (food, clothing, furniture, etc) cooperative that due to it's well established social value was getting council and some governmental finding for over 10 years - everyone involved in it would see it as a prefigurative example of the future of society of fulfilled low carbon living. However, due to austerity cuts and a profit seeking landlord, who was asking for 10 grand a month in rent (which was over a third of how much the coop was making) once the council could no longer funnel money into the landowners pocket - the project was no longer viable and folded.

Your analysis is correct and I agree with the frame. My point is that there's no single point of resolution: creating unstable dependencies is inevitable, it is necessary because we are rooted in an existing system that controls most of the resources. The resources provided by the unstable dependency must be used to make yourself eventually independent and remove the unstable dependency, making the system or the single organization able to reproduce itself without the unstable dependency. If your proposal doesn't have a path to achieve reproduction and sustainability that is realistic given the resources available, it's prefigurative, in the sense that it doesn't create lasting change beyond the people that lived through that experience. People who will probably be burned out and in conflict with each other, but that's a different problem.

Hmm, I would call the first (after Scott) "anarchist calistenics". It's about learning to undo the conditioning of capitalist / hierachical society. It can appear a bit performative, but it is often very eye-opening for people new to anarchist concepts.

Prefiguration is about concrete actions for building community support structures that allow groups of people to have alternatives and fallbacks. It is also about planting the seeds for structures that can take over in times of disaster or societal upheaval. A tool library, even if only small, is prefiguration for example. I also consider running this Lemmy instance as a prefigurative action.

"Building the new in the shell of the old" does not refer to reforming the existing system. It acknoledges that the capitalist system can not be reformed, but will likely collapse due to internal contradictions (or the effects of climate change etc). at some point. Thus parallel structures need to be established inside the current system, to be prepared and to teach people that alternatives are possible.

This is a very different way to use the term than how it is used in Europe and in the theory I read. For me prefigurative politics are raves (in the European sense), TAZ, worldbuilding workshops, etc etc.

A tool library, even if only small, is prefiguration for example.

For me, if it's done to make feel better the people setting it up, it is prefigurative. If it's done to solve real problems for real people who don't read theory, it's not prefigurative. You're already doing the thing, so there's nothing to prefigurate. If you believe that by doing it, a thousand other tool libraries will bloom, that's prefigurative again, because that's assuming that the current state of things is due to a lack of imagination and liberating subjective experiences, which didn't bring much so far. We have had at least 30-40 years of this, and most spaces and people who participated in such activities are still as powerless as they were in the past.

The slogan "building the new in the shell of the old" goes directly back to the syndicalists of the IWW, who originally used it to describe concrete action in the workplace to establish horizontal decision making structures etc. so that such worker owned cooperatives could prefigurate envisioned changes in larger society.

Prefiguration is also often used in contrast to revolutionary action. I.e. instead of waiting for or trying to instigate a revolution (which is unlikely to happen or at least not where and when you expect it), proponents of prefiguration argue that concrete actions in the here and now are more vital.

I don't read theory about prefigurative politics so no. I don't read much Marxist theory either and for sure not on praxis, which doesn't seem to be doing much better than prefigurative politics.

Nonetheless, I encounter a lot of people using the word in their papers, events, artworks or similar stuff and that's where I see the term used, rather than on theory.

Well, the scarcity of results in the last few decades must put forward the idea that whatever has been tried before, didn't work. If you want to expand your political environment, teach activists or organizers how to cook. Teach them how to talk about relationship problems. Organize tea parties, raves, and mending clubs. Create spaces to unwind after work. Infiltrate churches, sports clubs, gyms, games clubs, online forums. Turn street protests into a space for networking: nobody is listening to your chants anyway.

Against fragmentation: unifying dev discussions with forum federation

On a recent episode of the Dot Social podcast, John O'Nolan of Ghost said;

The fragmentation of dev discussions is something I hear about a lot lately. Forum federation could be a solution!

Imagine every federated software project has its own forum space. Smaller projects might be content with a dedicated category on a community-hosted dev forum. More well-resourced projects might host their own instance of Discourse or NodeBB or whatever suits them.

Cross-project forums like SocialHub can then have a dedicated category for each software they know about, and use forum fed

The fragmentation of dev discussions is something I hear about a lot lately. Forum federation could be a solution!

Cross-project forums like SocialHub can then have a dedicated category for each software they know about, and use forum federation to sync that with the home forum space preferred by that project.

Eg the Discourse category on SocialHub is synced with the ActivityPub tag on meta.discourse.org. Any post in that SH category appears on Meta with that tag, and vice-versa.

With enough careful plumbing, that solves the fragmentation of public dev discussion across forums. But a lot of potentially insightful chats start in micro-posting threads. Adding a limited ability to start a new forum topic, by mentioning the relevent category or tag actor (eg @discourse@socialhub.ActivityPub.rocks), could bring those in too.

However, most of the examples John gives are private chats (fedi DMs, email, Discord, etc). I encourage devs to gird their loins and apply the 'release early, release often' principle to dev chat. Make public the default for dev chatter, unless it really is sensitive.

That said, with some careful work, support could be added for federating private conversations between forums too. Ideally in a way where AP actors could be included, that automatically open the chat to trusted groups.

This! Imagine we could get to the point where SH is a display layer on top of a distributed data layer of dev discussions. So deleting stuff from SH didn't delete it from the underlying data layer. Then we could develop a process for pruning SH down to the strong wood. Akin to using git rebase to prune version history down to the key info.

OR we could keep SH as is, and use a federated forum at distillery.activitypub.rocks to create a more curated portal. If anyone disagreed with the curation approach, the underlying data is all still there, so they could fork the effort to demonstrate their approach on top of the same shared data layer.

Does this sound familiar? It should. It's exactly how existing fediverse moderation works.

This is the more interesting discussion to me, and where a design-first approach can be very innovative and valuable. This is what I meant above when saying "what is a Forum once it becomes fully federated?". Adding federation support to any app changes the nature, characteristics, and audience of it in ways that should be well-known and anticipated.

This design focus at ecosystem level is almost entirely missing in fediverse evolution, and with its bottom-up processes the demand is often "I have this app feature, so I need that AP extension to support it". No matter how high-quality your own app is, for the ecosystem where your foundational technology evolves, this constitutes a Big Ball of Mud anti-pattern: A software system that lacks a perceivable architecture.

Now the tradeoff of the 3-stage bottom-up standardization process that we need in our decentralized grassroots environment is that we likely should allow this anti-pattern to an extent, as it stimulates bottom-up innovation of the fediverse by freeing devs to experiment with new things. The FEP Process allows for this by being non-normative and completely open to any participant to contribute to. And it has many overlapping mechanisms and good-practices that need to be reconciled later to assure the broad interoperability of the fediverse long-term.

Summarizing you can say that both a bottom-up and a top-down standardization process are needed. They should meet and help realign and reinforce each other, and give direction to the ecosystem as a whole. Bottom up we absorb the technical reality and best-practices, and top-down we craft and chisel an open interoperable fediverse able to support the social experiences that people need.

Geosocial activities are part of the core Activity Vocabulary that underlies ActivityPub. But, they’re not as widely implemented as other activities in the vocabulary. This app is trying to change that, by making them available on the network, and making it easy to create them.

To test the client, your service will need to support:

Webfinger (for login)
ActivityPub API (“client-to-server”, “C2S”)
FEP-d8c2 (OAuth 2.0 profile for ActivityPub API)
proxyUrl (for fetching data from remote servers)

To test federation, your service will need to support:

Receiving Arrive, Leave, and Travel activities
Showing those activities to users

As of this writing, Mastodon does not work for either of these. If you want to test receiving federated messages, follow me on evan@onepage.pub . I’ve been using it a lot!

This is my second ActivityPub API client (ap, the command-line client, was my first), and my first one for the Web. I found this process really fun and invigorating. I was able to create a new kind of social networking application (well, new on the Fediverse…) purely from the client side. The app saves no data to the server; everything is done in the browser.

places.pub

I’m making an initial version of places.pub available today. places.pub is a collection of Place objects suitable for use in geosocial applications on the ActivityPub network.
Part of my work in the Social Web Community Group at the W3C has been participation in the GeoSocial Task Force. This is a sub-group of the SocialCG that focuses on implementing user stories in ActivityPub related to the intersection of geographical systems and social networking, for example, tagging an image with the place it represents, or checking in to a location.
One important need for geosocial software is that all objects in ActivityPub, including Place objects, need to have a permanent URL as their id property, which shares the description of that object in Activity Streams 2.0 format. However, there isn’t a good dataset of geographical objects — countries, states or provinces or regions, cities, buildings, businesses, parks, streets — available in AS2 on the Web right now. That is slowing down experimentation in the Geosocial Task Force.
Using the service

So, I worked on making places.pub for geosocial hackers to experiment with. It’s a service that exposes places from the amazing OpenStreetMap collection of data as AS2 objects on the Web. So, given an OpenStreetMap object like the Rogers Centre Ottawa, it provides an AS2 version suitable for use in geosocial activities in ActivityPub. It also has a rudimentary search mechanism, although I think most users will want to use the Nominatim service for searching the OpenStreetMap database, and then map the IDs onto places.pub.
Once you know the places.pub ID for a place, you can use it for geotagging objects, people, activities, or using special geosocial activity types like check in, check out, and travel. There is a good list of examples on the places.pub home page, but obviously this is not an exhaustive list!
How it is built

This wasn’t my first time trying to build places.pub; I’d done two earlier versions with different architectures and the same interface. The first time out, about 7 years ago, I created a full NodeJS server that used a full mirror of the OpenStreetMap database, so I didn’t need to hit the OSM API to fetch data. It worked pretty well, but it was really expensive — hundreds of dollars per month to keep a database server of that size running and synched.
I tried a second version a few months ago, which did batch generation of AS2 Place objects from the OpenStreetMap exports, and then uploaded them to the S3 service at Amazon Web Services. This was a whole lot cheaper, but it took a long time to download, convert, and re-upload the data.
This third implementation, with source code available on GitHub, is a little bit easier than both. Instead of sloshing the huge OSM dataset back and forth, I used the version of the data stored in the Google Cloud Public Datasets system on BigQuery. This let me ignore the effort of moving data, and just focus on giving it a good ActivityPub-compatible interface using a Google Cloud Run function. It seems to work pretty nicely.
Next steps

I’d love to see some experimentation with using places.pub for geosocial activity in the social web. I’m going to work on some implementations in my own ActivityPub software. If you find problems with the software, please add an issue on GitHub or let me know on the Fediverse at @evanprodromou.

It’s been about 10 years since I first heard the word “solarpunk.” It came to me via Facebook feed, in the form of a link to Adam Flynn’s “Solarpunk: Notes Toward a Manifesto.” As a lapsed writer of SFF and one-time poli-sci major, this was a pretty irresistible title for me. So I clicked.
The piece still holds up (I’ve assigned it a couple times). It’s a brief and elegant medley of imagery, references, and sloganeering. It had stuff to say about pop culture, and politics, and the looming climate crisis. For me, the most exciting part was that it implied a science fiction that wasn’t ‘space manifest destiny’ (which I could tell wasn’t happening) or 'cyberpunk singularity’ (which I’d soured on living in the shadow of Silicon Valley) or ‘dystopia/apocalypse’ (which was oversaturated in the post-Hunger Games/Walking Dead media landscape of the teens). And that science fiction had a catchy name that seemed to open up bright vistas of previously clouded possibility.

I hope this isn't the main takeaway from this essay - the essayist confesses his own experience has repudiated this chart.

It assumes in spite of heavy propaganda and social pressure that individual people can accurately evaluate an opaque hierarchical system as changeable and/or 'totalizing.' He viewed Trump as proof that the neoliberal system is not totalizing, that system change is possible.

Thanks for catching that. It's valid criticism and the article should attribute more sources. There are other articles about this program that are unfortunately behind a paywall and some just mention "pilot programs" but don't specify much further. I would recommend “Consider Phlebas” by Iain Banks, which is part of the Culture series of novels. Very formative for me, and I read that while I was writing Theme Park. And I still think it’s the best depiction of a post-A.G.I. future, an optimistic post-A.G.I. future, where we’re traveling the stars and humanity reached its full flourishing.

The protagonist of Consider Phlebas is working for the Culture's enemies, a theocratic empire that has slaves literally bred for loyalty, and the conflict they're engaged in ultimately kills billions of sentient beings. Most of the thoughts about the Culture are his, and he basically decries them as the ultimate wokesters. No wonder HN nerds prefer The Player of Games in which a smart nerd like themselves get recruited as an agent to bring down an empire a bit like our own by being really really good at games.

Much the same mistake I (and many others) made trying to get into the series! Although I have to say that I'm still one of the philistines that gerikson brings up who's read Phlebas and Player of Games and not much else.

Everyone is entitled to their own readership of Banks. I'm not saying mine is the one and only. But the Culture is supposed to be a background character, even if Banks spends a lot of time in the later novels "explaining" it. But if the reader only focusses on the lore, they'll miss the quite good characters and psychology that Banks was good at too.

My personal favorite is Use of Weapons, where the focus is on the people doing the Culture's dirty work. In one scene, Zakalwe

spends an inordinate time trying to protect a useless aristocracy from being wiped out by a revolution, only to find out his side was meant to lose for some inscrutable Mind-directed reason. This kind of shit happens all the time to him, and as he's basically a deeply traumatized individual he's able to keep doing it.

@angusmcleod I don't know if it is related, but directly after posting the toot above from this Mastodon account, the SocialHub forum went into error mode and is not loading properly rn. Seems similar issue to what happened the other day.

Update: The forum became responsive again, and these 2 federated toots are shown on the forum. It may be that the federation logic kept the CPU busy, or was somehow affecting proper forum operations. I cannot check that.

This was a busy month, with ~80 pull requests merged, as we're trying to get all the breaking changes we can added before the 1.0 release.

The release is still several months away, as even after finishing up the rest of the 1.0 milestone issues, we still have to add this new functionality to Lemmy-UI and Jerboa, and do extensive testing.

Here are some of the major changes made over the past month:

Added multi-communities (One of the most requested features).
Added a new rate limiting library.
Refactored the API structs and library for better usage in Rust projects.
Improved the migration diff checker.
Using an external library for checking invisible characters.
Votes are now removed when banning + removing data.

Ritual helps people to care. Ritual, to put it another way, helps create empathy. And the natural world could definitely use some care and empathy these days.

As an animist I recognize and respect the sacredness of all that is, as a former skeptic this notion would have made me deeply defensive a few years ago, and even now I still find myself resisting to anything I perceive as prescribed group practice. My own experience makes me wonder how others who haven't reconnected to landscape yet would perceive such an idea.

Mumbo jumbo sounds very defensive to me. It's strange how people get quite angry or at least really dismissive when you mention anything that is beyond the commonly accepted mainstream science - even when there's no direct harm done to them by people talking about it. It's also strange when you find out how many actual scientists are animists or carry some sort of spiritual belief.

When you get deeper into indigenous philosophies (branded since the times of enlightenment as superstitious mumbo jumbo) you often find belief systems that are incredibly pragmatic and would solve many of the social and environmental problems our rationalist thoughtscape has brought about, but our Western supremacist education makes it difficult for us to accept how much we could gain by opening up to it.

I became an animist after reading about the concept of Wendigo, and then applying the scientific method to indigenous belief systems by just acting as if they were true and finding out what happens in my life. For a brief period after the landscape and my ancestors were starting to speak to me I wasn't sure whether I was descending into psychosis, but ultimately the results of listening to these voices and taking their guidance were more sound than continuing to follow the un-guidance of Western rationalist culture. At the same time I met quite a few people who were going through the same changes of mind. There seems to be an interesting process going on that brings more and more people back into a connection and relation with non-human life (animals, plants, rivers, mountains, ancestors ...) and those who open up to it are usually those who I consider working for positive improvements (social justice, environmental issues), so I consider them my family.

The very first opening up, even before reading about Wendigo, was by me being a pet owner and having some experiences with my horse that showed a depth of soul I could not continue to dismiss - so maybe you want to ask your dog about what they think about the mumbo jumbo?

pfft. Certainly. Defensive of my time usage and boredom. How about everyone spends an hour going through a 6 minutes on the top ten most popular beliefs. As I said as long as I know I can just come after or skip it if its placed after. The main thing is to identify when the real thing begins and when the fluff takes place. Better for it to be after so that you don't come and get the people who are like well the fluff started late so we still need a few for it. The main thing is respect. Let those who want ceremony to break into whatever groups represent their particular ceremonies with dedicated time and let those who don't want that part to skip it.

I think the reasoning expressed here is taking the wrong approach. The type of person in most need of convincing that we should consider ritual as an important (if not outright necessary) tool for changing society (especially if it's to "save" the environment) is the type of person for whom:
1. ritual is responsible for everything wrong with the current state of the world
2. the ends don't justify the means
3. indigenous practices are something to be "sifted through" with modern science to keep the "actual" and discard the "frivolous"

To convince such a person (for whom I expect Carl Sagan's words on science being a "candle in the dark" deeply resonate), I think it would be much more productive to talk about how we came to care so much about democracy and human rights given neither are, to my knowledge, falsifiable.
The acts of voting and holding an election are deeply secular rituals; we imbue them with power by performing them, and we perform them because we view them as imbued with power (specifically, the power to confer legitimacy on the decision made by their own outcome). Similarly, writing down on a piece of paper that human beings should be treated on equal footing has been effectively ritualized[0] to help convince others - including those born long after the paper was written on - that we should act as if it were true, despite any evidence our senses may provide us for the contrary.
A third, even more mundane example of a secular ritual is when two parties sign a contract.
A fourth, much more fun example of a secular ritual is gift-giving on certain significant moments in time - birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas.

I would wager this hypothetical reader-in-need-of-convincing thinks all four of these rituals are good - for them, for everyone, and also just plain Good. They don't need to be scientifically proven to "work" so much as they need to be scientifically "cleared of harm" - we don't give up on contracts just because they can be used for harm, we pass laws so that we can ignore and/or annul any harmful contracts that might otherwise take effect. Similarly, maybe we can make "coexisting with the environment" sacred without involving notions of heaven, hell, or any sort of higher power. We certainly seem to want to treat human rights as sacred, even though that isn't a perfect approach either.

In any case, I would have been much more receptive to this line of reasoning back when I would have dismissed the article itself as not-that-deep and somewhat fetishistic.

Not only have there been multiple signings of declarations of human rights over the years, many of them were directly inspired by previous one(s). From the USA's "bill of rights" to the French "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen" to the UN's "Universal Declaration of Human Rights", most continue to be taught about in Western education as being important milestones for society as well having a net good impact on us.

Just as we are creatures of habit, we are creatures of belief. Ritual is belief + habit + (ideally) intent.

To be clear:
I don't argue for abandoning objective reality, but rather that the path to there, from within our own minds, will need to incorporate rituals on some level. The scientific method is really just a very specific kind of ritual. Let's lean into all of our strengths as human beings, not just our capacity for reasoning.
