Whats a good tool for tracking my emissions?I tried apps like Klima and Earth Hero. Earth Hero is especially good but I would like to play with the numbers myself for specific scenarios like snapshots of my emissions, planning my next year, logging my specific air travel, hobbies, etc.
If anyone has a spreadsheet model I would be grateful. Otherwise I can build one. Earth Hero gives a lot of references to their source models.

Even though I mostly agree with the conclusion of this article, it is a pretty bad take otherwise. They even partially contradict themselves and in general seem to think that there is no such thing as an equilibrium, but only boom or bust (and yes reaching and maintaining an equilibrium is hard work).
If I had time and motivation I would write an parody on this article from the view of the late Roman empire where a person complains about how society can not survive without slave labor and how everything is build on it and so on. Yes, the Roman empire did eventually collapse, but not because of a lack of cheap slave labor.

Hahaha. I think they sorta acknowledge the existence of an equilibrium by saying that the 'collapse' wouldn't happen overnight but over several decades

Yet another bit about Musk's delusions of grandeur
“The Elon”: How a Nazi Rocket Scientist Invented the World’s Richest Man
Errol Musk named his son after a character in a sci-fi book by the inventor of the V-2 Rocket, Wernher von BraunJim Stewartson (MindWar: The Psychological War on Democracy)
a) how do I keep discovering accounts of people I admire on this platform,
b) I fucking LOVE Accelerando and the Eschaton series,
c) that... really comforts me in a strange way. I always thought Veppers was supposed to be Bezos, but this is even better.
And lastly I am sorry for the loss of your friend.
"Veppers... is based on Musk"
If this is true, then it's a remarkable bit of SF foresight, because in 2010, Musk was nowhere near what he is now. He wasn't even in the top 100 richest. He was rich, but not even a billionaire. It was such a different time that even Jeff Bezos was just #43 in the world (this is from Forbes 2010). We didn't yet have our current technofeudalism centered on Internet tycoons; the tech tycoons in the top 10 were Bill Gates and Larry Ellison.
Regarding the main topic of this thread, I too had wondered if the name is a clue that Elon was the golden child of some secret cult of upper-class Space Nazis, their anointed one destined to realize the Iron Dream. But if one is to entertain such thoughts, you should be aware that it was also the middle name of a maternal great-grandfather, John Elon Haldeman, who was apparently a Minnesota school teacher who emigrated to Canada with his chiropractor wife.
Musk was already a famous multi-millionaire with a dot-com history, a rocket program, and IIRC an electric car company. Musk was playing at James Bond villainy back in the 00s. (And I used to go to the pub with Iain.)
As for the name I thought it was well known that the Musk family were involved in the Technocracy movement?

Solarpunk Trinity to clear confusion
I think that often the confusion when talking about solarpunk happens because solarpunk as per now it's a term that includes different subset of its characteristics without being necessarily superimposable with each other
2 examples:
- can have solarpunk aesthetic produced in a non solarpunk way
- can have solarpunk movements not relying on the solarpunk aesthethic
Seems like a fair summary, yes 👍
Is there a source for that image, or did you make it yourself by the way? Just wondering if it was part of an article or so.
did you make it yourself

I mean, animals are exploited by other animals all the time... The relationships can be mutually beneficial though or at least commensal (one species benefits while the other neither benefits nor is harmed)
There are wasps that mimic bees and take over their hives for their own breeding purposes.
Some prairie dogs use bird calls as a predator warning system, which the bird exploits to steal the prairie dog's food.
Cuckoo birds lay their eggs in the nests of other birds to be raised by them
Some ants farm aphids for their sugary secretions
People were able to live side by side with so many animals over millennia without destroying entire populations. So I'd say that humans using animals instead of machines can be quite solarpunk.
and animals rape each other all the time ....
Mot stupid things ever said ....
I know you mean well, but the first part of your comment is an appeal to nature - the assertion that because some thing is natural, that it is good, or at least unavoidable. In reality it sidesteps the question: is animal exploitation part of solarpunk?
I believe in harm reduction and imperfect solutions, so I would say yes, to a certain degree.
But I don't want to be all negative (doomerism is the antithesis of solarpunk after all). You raise some good examples, and for my part, if we can show that animal suffering under human care is less than if they were left totally free, then I would feel a lot less gross about it.
I never said that animal exploitation is good, just that it is 'natural' in the world. Solarpunk, as an idea, has everything to do with nature. Coexisting and living with it, rather than against it.
Is it wrong to use ladybugs as a form of pest control instead of harmful chemicals?
It's it wrong to ride a horse around a farm instead of an ATV or even an electric UTV?
Additionally, the definition of exploitation can vary wildly from person to person, and even moreso between cultures. So imo, pretty much everything that happens in the animal kingdom is party of solarpunk. The "good" and the "bad." As nothing is all good or all bad. Even murder can be justified in the most extreme cases (i.e. Hitler, Stalin, Trump, billionaire CEOs, etc )
Consent to be loved, and protected from predators and disease? Or their consent for me taking a margin of their labor?
I’ve got both contracts I’m just checking which one I need to get out

"Anything threatening to be a subculture is commodified before it can walk"
I think this reasoning applies well to solarpunk. It’s true that ethical consumerism doesn’t scale etc but we have to resist the urge to give money to the people who will commodify solarpunk just for cheap merch and media.
For example:
game full of bad messages but made by a workers coop and ethically distributed > game with solarpunk aesthethic made by limited liability company that took or wants to take VCs money and run in the capital race

The open-source solar panel that passively tracks the sun using nothing but water & gravity:
I thought this ingenious invention might interest some folk on here:
The SunSaluter is a solar panel rotator designed for the developing world. Using only the power of gravity with a water clock, the SunSaluter enables a solar panel to passively follow the sun throughout the day, boosting energy output by 30% and producing four liters of clean drinking water.

Principle: water clock, see-saw balance. Water drips from a bottle through a mechanical filter, reducing its weight and continuously swaying the solar panel. Needs to be refilled in the morning of course.
By the way, the thumbnail pic shows a misadjusted one, that solar panel is very much not facing the sun.

Darren Aronofsky, Brendan Fraser – „The Whale“ (2022)

Notes Towards a Solarpunk Game Design - Overview
Solarpunk Game Design Sketch by Scan101 I've always been interested in game design and how subtly it can teach and influence us.alxd - solarpunk hacker
I think we should write more about solarpunk itself so I’m glad for your post, thank you
Said that, I would have added at least one disclaimer about solarpunk games intended as games produced in a more solarpunk way: stuff like no DRM, avoiding dark patterns, being a cooperative or being owned by a foundation and much more.
Let me underline the “just a disclaimer”, I know you wanted to focus on the content and what I said would need basically another full post
Again, love your initiative and I hope more people will follow you 🙏
idk if ''should'' but if they do would be nice
hardware shouldn't become ''old'' in the first place, putting the heavy weight on the game devs solely seems unlikely to bring change
software libraries, frameworks, game engines, operating systems, recycling hardware... It's a lot before arriving to the people that wanna focus on the game
I was thinking about a separate blogpost on accessibility and licensing.
Some games, like Daybreak, proclaim to use open source manufacturing methods to be more sustainable and not pollute, but at the same time the game itself is licensed and copyrighted with no (known to me) invitation to hack or fan-translate, which vastly decreases its educational potential.
On the other hand, making an ambitious game takes money and markets rarely pay for fully open projects.
Open source (nor foss) doesn't really assure protection from the capital and/or consumerism...
On the other hand, making an ambitious game takes money and markets rarely pay for fully open projects
yep, hence why imo is better to not be fully open from day 0. The free software movement reached his peak, now it's time to evolve into something better. A software made by squeezing the open libraries and then the devs and then the consumers to then have most of the earnings kept in the company bank to get numbers going up for the capital is totally doable even while having the most free license.
As you say tho, it can help with accessibility and longevity.
I just would like to not see ''solarpunk99'' in some years made in the worst possible way. I'd rather have toxic games but made in a solarpunk way than ''solarpunk'' games made by the capital to sell us another commodified idea
should run on older hardware
How old are we talking?
Better yet, what minimum system requirements should the game be able to run on?
Steam collects hardware info (that people opt-in for) over the years. Here is the searchable database.
One of the recommendations in this list, Half Earth Socialism, pretty easily stole half my day by being a wonderful distraction.
I think it's a little bleak though. It takes a few tries to get it right. And it assumes a worldwide revolution against capital happened 3 years ago, a process that would probably take half a decade, and we haven't even really started in real life.
It is fun though, and it's nice that it teaches you some stuff along the way.
