Over the past week, there’s been a noticeable shift away from X in the UK, and it feels long overdue. According to Bluesky’s PR, the platform has seen a surge in new users and activity from the UK. I’ve personally noticed more people finding my profiles on both Threads and on Bluesky, and I’ve seen a significant number of “I just deleted my X account” posts on Threads. However, due to the algorithm, these posts often appear in bursts, sometimes delayed by a day or two.

My friend Neville Hobson wrote a piece today titled “Finally, the Unravelling of X,” where he discusses this migration, the reasons behind it, and the pros and cons of choosing between Bluesky and Threads. Neville touches on the idea of a “more respectful, decentralized web,” (to quote him on the Fediverse), and even highlights something I said on Threads yesterday. In response to a question about where politicians should go in a post-X world, I suggested that governments should own their own social platforms:

I wanted to expand on what I meant by a “sovereign owned/operated Mastodon instance” for the UK Parliament, and why I believe this is important.

One of the major tensions between Big Tech and national governments over the past 15 years has revolved around platform ownership and control. The European Union has even labeled several tech companies as “gatekeepers” in the Digital Markets Act. This term is telling—these companies essentially gatekeep the digital rights, data, and access of national citizens.

If governments are concerned about the dominance of privately-owned online platforms, they have a responsibility to run and own their own. At FOSDEM in Brussels this February, we noticed growing interest in Fediverse platforms and technologies like Mastodon from several national governments and the EU itself. Many of these institutions are already running their own social media instances and actively encouraging their politicians to use them. In the EU, there’s no reason to switch to Threads since Meta has restricted the platform’s availability in the bloc. Moreover, Threads doesn’t allow users to run their own instances, unlike Mastodon or even Bluesky, which, while less common, does technically support setting up a external ATProto instance (I don’t think that’s really happening though? happy to be informed and to learn otherwise – I’ll readily admit that it has not been at the centre of my attention).

For years, governments, newsrooms, and other organisations have protested the idea that private companies should control and limit their messages. A logical response would be for these entities to run their own instances of software like Mastodon—or any Fediverse-compatible, ActivityPub-based service. This would allow them to own their content, domain, and user verification, ensuring greater control and independence.

The UK is lagging behind in this area. While the EU has embraced Mastodon, and in the US, many organisations have moved to Threads, the UK has yet to take similar steps. For example, I follow @POTUS@threads.net and @whitehouse@threads.net from my Mastodon account, because they’ve enabled Fediverse sharing. Even though Threads is owned and operated by Meta, it’s positive that their content can reach into the wider Fediverse. Ideally, Threads will eventually fully integrate with the ActivityPub network, offering a two-way interaction and allowing for account, network, and maybe content portability—hence why I said, “in principle, with federated social accounts, the location does not matter so much, as long as they can be discovered and followed.” Owning the network and identity allows for broader discoverability and avoids corporate chokeholds.

As an aside: the EU has been a strong supporter of free software, Open Source, and open standards. My colleagues in the Mastodon team have signed an open letter in support of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) programs, urging the EU not to cut these investments. I fully support this stance.

There are challenges to this approach:

Running digital services requires consistent investment and maintenance.
Discovery isn’t always straightforward, and organisations seek reach and measurement—areas where Fediverse platforms currently fall short.
Deciding who qualifies for an account on a sovereign platform is tricky. While it makes sense for current MPs to have official accounts on a national Fediverse server, it’s harder to justify the inclusion of political parties or other entities on the same platform. This is an area where we need to improve data and account portability as the Fediverse grows.

These are important discussions that we need to be having. Politicians and the media should advocate for greater decentralisation and digital sovereignty to protect the freedom of democratic institutions.

Oh, and of course – these organisations should also fully embrace, invest in, and protect the open web.

I am by no means the only blogger to propose that this is a good way to avoid being locked-in or censored by commercial “Big Tech” or other interests. It turns out that George Peretz had posted something along the same lines as me only a few days earlier (How the Labour Government, and others, should respond to Musk); I was unaware of that post until I ran into it via Seize The Means Of Communication!

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the notion that governments can do more to secure their own online voices by owning and operating their own Fediverse instances (Mastodon, as an example).

I am by no means the only blogger to propose that this is a good way to avoid being locked-in or censored by commercial “Big Tech” or other interests. It turns out that George Peretz had posted something along the same lines as me only a few days earlier (How the Labour Government, and others, should respond to Musk); I was unaware of that post until I ran into it via Seize The Means Of Communication!¹ on the Lightly Seared blog much more recently.

Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz went on to cover my post on their For Immediate Release podcast, and in particular Neville asked for me to share more about what I know in relation to existing government or state owned-and-operated Mastodon instances. I’m happy to do so!

Proof of value

One of the more visible examples of governments embracing the Fediverse is case of the European Union. Initially running EU Voice (Mastodon) and EU Video (PeerTube) as pilots, these were evaluated for 2 years, and then closed in May. However, this year the European Commission formally joined the Fediverse with a Mastodon instance (supported by Mastodon gGmbH).

Beyond that, but still in the European continent: France, Germany and the Netherlands (more on the Dutch instance via the excellent Fediverse Report) have prominent presences in the Fediverse.

In addition, the Swiss Government launched an instance in September 2023 as a pilot which was due to last for one year; I’ll be curious to watch how that is evaluated.

Taking a step beyond central government, I’ve read that various federal states in Germany have their own instances.

There are also good reasons for broadcasters to run their own Fediverse instances (the BBC has had a pilot here, for example); universities and academics; and more.

I’m curious to learn of more of these, let me know in the comments if you are aware of others.

A case for Brazil

Finally, I want to talk briefly (but, only because I must) about X.

We talked about the events of the end of last week, when Brazil’s courts chose to block access to X in that country, on episode 3.19 of the TechGrumps podcast that was recorded this weekend, and should be released any moment.

Along with Musk’s direct personal attacks on the UK Prime Minister and his efforts to spread dangerous misinformation, this is yet another example of Musk, specifically, demonstrating his untrustworthiness, and lack of willingness to be bound by the rule of law – national or international. According to the media, there has been a swift take-up of Bluesky by many Brazilian users; it is difficult to measure Mastodon or other Fediverse instance signups because there are many individual instances that comprise the network, but we know that there was a significant surge of interest at the end of last week.

A lot of people who are up in arms over Brazil banning Xitter aren’t acknowledging the fact that the country cast off a military dictatorship in 1985 and Elon’s openly allied with the neofascist who tried to restore it, with help from Elon Social, just two years ago. Pretty unique situation.
That judge may well have a beef with Musk because of his intransigence but the stakes are much higher than that.

Whichever directions users migrate, the important thing is that more people must leave X as a platform, and disempower Musk’s efforts to disrupt the law.

@evan I am somehow surprised that the actual Brazilian government still doesn't have an instance of some software compatible with activity pub.
Before leaving Brazil, I was part of a group engaged in open government data and civic hacking. I really hope these groups are still strong as they were a few years ago!
By the way, in 2011, I was advocating the City Council of São Paulo to have an identi.ca server, instead of Twitter. This didn't work, but at least I could open up some government data.

I just read Octavia Butler's "Parable of the Sower" and I can't believe it took me until now to read it.

Parable of the Sower is such a good book.
First, it's interesting that it starts right about now. The book starts in mid-2024, and even mentions that its an election year. That was a fascinating experience to read a scifi book in the moment in time in which it is set. It still feels like it takes place about 20 years in the future. It was written 31 years ago, so politically things have seemed to move as many steps forward as backward. It seems like a lot of things have not gotten better and worse than when Butler wrote it, so in some sense I feel like I'm looking at it as a near future in the same way as when it was written a generation ago. I guess I'm glad things didn't go as badly as in the story, but it's rough that the looming threat from 30 years ago feels the same distance away now as then.
Second, it's painful to read. Although the events described in the book haven't happened in the book's setting -- California --

FEP-7888 and the Add activity

@thisismissem@hachyderm.io in a post yesterday brought back the idea that better post controls could be achieved if the reply were sent to the target only, and the target then forwards it if applicable.

It reminded me of @trwnh@mastodon.social's w3id.org/fep/7888, which attempts to govern a similar flow where a reply is sent to the context owner (instead of inReplyTo, which I think was Em's intent), and the context owner (and/or originating server) federates out an Add if approved.

Which got me thinking about whether that federated server could actually send out a Remove too!

Let's say a reply is made but later on, a mod decides that it is to be deleted. A Remove would be a way to signal to other instances that the content actually be removed/deleted!

We could even take it one step further; servers will always exist who don't adhere to the philosophy of the context owner approving replies. If they federate their own replies out, the context owner could actually proactively send a Reject and limit the spread of those replies...

Ein Bild sagt mehr als 1000 Worte, heißt es. Und tatsächlich hat Solarpunk als Bewegung zum ersten Mal richtig an Fahrt aufgenommen, als 2008 auf dem Tumblr-Blog Solarpunk Aesthetic ein Artikel über Solarpunk Mode veröffentlicht wurde, der mit attraktiven Bildern untermalt war.
Der große Vorteil von Bildern besteht darin, dass sie viel niedrigschwelliger sind als Texte. Sie erreichen viel eher unsere Emotionen als geschriebene Wörter. Und auch Menschen, die nicht gerne lesen (oder es nicht gut können) haben dazu Zugang – ein wichtiger Schritt für Inklusion und Demokratisierung.
Wie ich in diesem Artikel beschrieben habe, hat sich Solarpunk auch als Gegenbewegung zu Cyberpunk und Steampunk entwickelt. Beide Subkulturen sind allerdings momentan noch sehr viel bekannter als ihr sonniges Gegenstück – und meiner Meinung nach sind sie auch deswegen so bekannt geworden, weil sie eine für viele Menschen attraktive Optik mit Wiedererkennungswert entwickelt haben. Kann und sollte Solarpunk diesen Weg gehen?

Cyberpunk entstand in den 1980er Jahren – und zwar in erster Linie als Abgrenzung vom damaligen Science-Fiction-Mainstream, der vielen Autor:innen zu naiv und unpolitisch vorkam. Klassische Werke in diesem Genre sind z.B. William Gibsons Neuromancer-Trilogie, Blade Runner, die Matrix-Filme, Terminator und Tron.
Im Hinblick auf die Ästhetik sind neonbeleuchtete Reklamen, Wolkenkratzer und heruntergekommene Stadtviertel für die Unterklasse charakteristisch für diese Subkultur:

Steampunk entstand ebenfalls in den 80er Jahren, ging als Genre aber eine andere Richtung. Steampunk-Geschichten spielen in alternativen Zukünften, in denen Dampfkraft und klassische Mechanik nach wie vor eine dominante Rolle spielen und auch Technologien wie Computertechnik und Raumfahrt prägen.

Steampunk-Ästhetik lebt dementsprechend von Zahnrädern und Bolzen, Kupfer und Messing – oft ergänzt durch eine viktorianisch anmutende Mode. Steampunk hat unter anderem auch deswegen eine weite Verbreitung erfahren, weil Subkulturen wie z.B. Goths sich die Ästhetik in Form von Cosplay-Outfits aneigneten:

Anders als bei Cyberpunk und Steampunk würde ich behaupten, dass die Ästhetik von Solarpunk noch in einer Findungsphase ist. Ästhetisches Empfinden ist natürlich sehr individuell, und unterschiedliche Menschen finden unterschiedliche Bilder schön. Trotzdem gibt es einige Bilder, die sehr häufig in Solarpunk-Communities erwähnt und genutzt werden – hier möchte ich einige davon vorstellen.
Saftige Wiesen, gutes Essen, glückliche Menschen, nachhaltige Technologien, die das Leben leichter machen… Wenn ich mir eine Zukunft wünschen dürfte, würde sie wohl ziemlich ähnlich aussehen wie in diesem Video.¹

Hier ein weiteres weit verbreitetes Bild im Solarpunk-Stil: Eine Frau steht auf einem bunt bewachsenen Balkon; um sie herum sieht man eine begrünte, autofreie Stadt. Im Stadtbild dominieren Solarpanele und Windräder, Glaskuppeln und Bäume. Weit im Hintergrund sind außerdem bewachsene Hochhäuser und Eine Seilbahn zu erkennen.

Runde Formen, die Kombination von Low-Tech (Handwagen) und High-Tech (Turbinen). Die Kraft der Elemente der Natur ist hier fast spürbar – positiv in Form von Windenergie, aber auch als Gefahr für die Ernte:

Auch wenn Solarpunk-Ästhetik noch nicht abschließend definiert wurde, kann man meiner Meinung nach schon einige Dinge verallgemeinern. In den meisten Kunstwerken dominieren helle, warme, pastellige Farben; thematisch ist zudem die Verschränkung bzw. Einbettung von Technologie in die Natur allgegenwärtig. Hier eine kurze Auflistung von Elementen, die in meiner Wahrnehmung sehr häufig vorkommen:

Was sollen diese Bilder denn bewirken? Nun, zunächst mal ist wichtig, dass Kunst natürlich auch für sich stehen, ohne Zweck bedeutsam sein darf. Gleichzeitig beruht die Wandel-Theorie von Solarpunk (wie ich sie wahrnehme) darauf, wünschenswerte Zukünfte wieder vorstellbar zu machen. Die Bilder erreichen für mich (und für viele andere in Solarpunk-Communities) genau das – sie wecken Sehnsucht nach möglichen Zukünften, die so aussehen könnten; sie geben diesen Zukünften ein konkretes, erlebbares Gefühl, statt sie nur mit Worten zu beschreiben; und oft genug inspirieren sie mich auch dazu, mehr über den Transformationsprozess dahin nachzudenken und Schritte auf dem Weg zu gehen. Tatsächlich laufen meine Lieblingsbilder als Dauerschleife auf meinem Desktop. 😅
Allerdings besteht meiner Meinung nach auch die Gefahr, dass Solarpunk zu einer bloßen Ästhetik verkommt und die progressiven, widerständigen Aspekte der Bewegung dabei unter den Tisch fallen. Teilweise passiert das schon: Wenn man bei Google „Solarpunk“ sucht, findet man reihenweise generische, oft KI-generierte² Darstellungen von begrünten, menschenleeren Wolkenkratzern – für mich ein Zeichen, dass es den Ersteller:innen gar nicht so sehr um die Menschen geht, die in dieser Welt leben könnten, bzw. dass sie zumindest keine Ideen für diejenigen haben, die nicht reich genug sind um im Penthouse im Hochhaus zu wohnen.
Aus diesem Grund bin ich immer auf der Suche nach Bildern, die a) die Werte der Bewegung sehr deutlich in sich tragen und b) auch schon Elemente eines möglichen Transformationsprozesses beinhalten. In den nächsten Wochen werde ich aus auf diesem Blog daher eine Reihe von Bildern vorstellen, die in diese Richtung gehen – und aus #Zukunftsbilder eine Artikel-Reihe machen!
Oft wird kritisiert, dass dieses Video vom Jogurt-Unternehmen Chobani in Auftrag gegeben wurde und somit weder kapitalismuskritisch (Unternehmen!) noch nachhaltig (Jogurt!) sein kann. Komplett lässt sich dieser Widerspruch vielleicht nicht auflösen; allerdings gilt Chobani als sozial-ökologisches Vorzeigeunternehmen, das viel in vegane Jogurt-Alternativen investiert – und zudem seit Jahren Anteile an seine Mitarbeiter:innen ausschüttet und somit eher zu einer Art Genossenschaft wird. ↩︎
Es ist eine heiß umkämpfte Frage, ob Künstliche Intelligenzen einen Platz in Solarpunk-Zukünften haben können. Auf der einen Seite ist es sicherlich möglich, KI in vielen Bereichen zur Verbesserung der Lebensumstände von Menschen einzusetzen; allerdings ist die Art und Weise, wie ChatGPT und co. heute genutzt werden, hochproblematisch, weil sie die Urheberrechte von Künstlerinnen missachten und einen riesigen Energieverbrauch haben. ↩︎

I’m not a particularly good writer, but here’s some advice my human brain hallucinated without burning down a rainforest:
- nobody fucking “steps into” a forest, what the fuck is that? if it’s an important place, describe it geographically. describe how the atmosphere and scenery change as Quinn approaches the forest. and since this is NaNoWriMo and you’re in a hurry, you can go with a placeholder like // TODO: sober up and do some basic research on what forests and their surrounding areas are usually like for authenticity, lorem ipsum Deloris shrdlu
- this fucker started shivering? is he naked? is the forest frozen in a way the surrounding area isn’t? if so maybe write that cause it sounds more interesting than this bland shit.
- maybe I live in a particularly dry place, but my brain isn’t rendering “the scent of damp earth” or why it’d sit thick in the air. I don’t think that’s what the forests I’ve been in smell like though — they smell like trees looking to fuck. but is Quinn the type of character who’d even give a fuck about any of this? maybe he lives in the forest and none of these smells are new. maybe he’s currently half a foot tall so the smell of the damp earth’s very relevant to him. the LLM doesn’t know so it filled in the blandest shit possible instead!

Light Pollution vs Streetlights & Perceived Safety

I’m designing a solarpunk city for my next novel and am exploring my options for streetlights. On the one hand, light pollution harms wildlife and humans. It also uses energy. On the other, well-lit streets increase the perception of safety. This is not to say good lighting prevents crime. If anything, it facilitates it. Further, you would expect crime to be less in a solarpunk city that prioritizes mutual aid, minimizes wealth disparity, and fights toxic masculinity. However, we should not discount the feeling of danger from darkness.

Personally, I’m male presenting, actively seek out dangerous situations, and have a high tolerance for horror movies. My first inclination is that streetlights should go. That said, once I got caught out at night in the woods. I was immediately terrified. And I had my phone light with me. In short, if a city is not lit, I suspect few people would venture out at night.

I just want to say, as a light pollution researcher, it warms my heart to see people start to get it.

You're on the right track and got plenty of good suggestions already. I'll add that the way to improve the feeling of safety is to light the faces of people, so you need lights at least taller than humans if you want them pointing downwards. Uniformity of lighting is also a big part, so multiple small lamps tend to be better than one big one.

In short, keep it dim, amber/red, uniform, localized, downward pointing (with dark roads if possible) and turn it off when not needed (most town in France shit off the lights in the evening and no one complained).

Also, keeping the streets narrow, winding and having buildings close (aka European streets) will confine the light in the city better than the opposite.

What about some tree- or bush-like structures that have lots of small lights, one under each leaf? Having many lights that could all be positioned and angled differently would let you direct the light to only where it's needed and create a smooth shaddow-free glow. And be pretty too! Like the Cave of Two Lovers @Gorgritch_umie_killa@aussie.zone posted. Individual lights could have different color and brightness too.

Depending on the kind of bio-engineering or fantastical biology in your world these could be completely organic, completely manufactured, or some combination like lights attached to trees/vines grown for the purpose.

Honestly, I'm really surprised to hear that IQ is not even a little bit heritable, given that IQ test performance correlates with level of education, which correlates with wealth, which is heritable.

True, wealth is not genetic, but heritability has an interesting definition which leads to some unintuitive cases of heritability abd non-heritability. For instance, wearing earrings is heritable while having ears is not.

We have a past which is chequered, like veryone else's. Successes, failures, and things which have changed in our thinking and our values.

The systems we have produced are incomplete or not current - they don't match up to what we need or want. And there is stasis and inertia in them; they have not changed for a few generations. Change will come at some point though, whether we have a say in it or not.

Hope and positivity are two different things. Hope dissociates from the present and the future, externalizing your care into an imagined future you can not affect. Empirically, people with hope fare worse psychologically than those without hope, because those with hope have no coping mechanisms when their hopes get dashed.

What we need is not positive news, but a positive life. Sit in a meadow, share meals with friends, be kind and generous, work at things that mean something to you, make art with passion, and rage during political protests.

When so much of the world's news and media are pushing a narrative of unending consumerism and growth, it is good to keep reminding ourselves with factual news that this world will collapse sooner rather than later.

If it helps, all life ends in misery, be it decreptitude, disease, ecosystems collapse, or all of the above. Life has never been about how it ends, it is about what we do while delaying the end. Everything we do for the future, we do for the future that will actually be, not for the future that gives us comfort to imagine.

There is a difference between "wishing" and "hope". "Wishing" actually does externalize the way you can shape the future you want. "Hope" on the other hand just lays out a positive future, which you can strive for.

That "hope" in form of a vision distinct and different to neoliberalism is one of the biggest reason the left has failed so badly in the last decades. We just need a vision of the future, which is practical in the real world. Hence worker cooperatives, permaculture, renewable energy, co-housing and all those other great projects, which actually can replace neoliberalism are so important. Without those working alternatives, we are doomed to just fight the evils of neoliberalism, fascism and dictatorships forever, as we can just never set up that alternative. Obviously we also should not fool ourself into believing it will be perfect if those are gone, but it hopefully is better.

What would you like to see in solarpunk art of ships/boats/coasts?

I recently started making solarpunk postcards again, and I had a lot of fun with a quick scene of a solarpunk cargo ship (a steel-hulled, four-masted barque) in a storm. I'd like to do more but don't yet have any strong points to make or designs I'm excited to feature.

So what would you like to see? What scene is missing from solarpunk art of humans interacting with oceans, rivers, lakes, canals? What weird idea, or old, practical design should make a comeback?

I can't promise that I'll make everything but I really do try to include as many suggestions as possible.

So far suggestions from reddit and discord have included:

Showing more of the mooring ropes and foundations festooned with underwater life (perhaps in another storm or low tide?)

Some kind of solar powered boats with kite-sails could be interesting, but I doubt that would really scale to cargo transport. Although kite-sails for cargo ships do exist and apparently reduce fuel consumption by a low double digit percentage.

I also once read that submarines could have amazing fuel efficiency (similar to whales), so maybe some sort of fully automated slowly moving electric submarine could be feasible? In general the water drag grows in exponent with the speed, so slower moving cargo ships should be in theory a lot more fuel efficient and an automated submarine wouldn't have to worry about adverse weather etc.

The solar powered, electric drive ships are cool! I might include something like this homemade one in a scene sometime.

I'd never heard about the submarine efficiency, but it makes sense.

I'm thinking about types of ships etc, and I suppose a solarpunk setting might have less of a range of purposes in addition to less shipping overall? Like, fishing, lobstering, crab fishing, etc are the first industries that spring to mind for me but even if someone is opposed to solarpunk being vegan, I don't think it's controversial to say the populations of those species need time and space to recover. Plus a lot of ocean waste is from the fishing industry. (I know lots of cultures are basically built around fishing but I'm not exactly qualified to depict them anyways.)

But what does that leave? Cargo, transportation, research, ships involved in building offshore wind or tidal power?

In your previous artworks, I really enjoyed your themes of reusing/repurposing things from an earlier time. So the first thing that came to mind for me was an offshore platform (one of those shallow water ones that’s anchored to the seabed) repurposed as living space, research area, or a hub for an offshore wind farm.

I don’t know of the technology level in your setting could accommodate this, but I also thought about nuclear powered cargo ships. Lots of safety and environmental considerations, but the potential to vastly reduce emissions (since cargo ships switch to the cheapest, nastiest, most bottom-of-the-barrel bunker oil sludge they can get their hands on as soon as they’re in international waters).

I like both of those ideas! I've seen a few cool takes on repurposed oil rigs, I'll have to read up on them a bit to see what kind of resources they offer to long term residents, but I'd enjoy doing a take on it - maybe a ship charging station from windmills plus merchant hub/repairs like a bartering outpost from waterworld?

Nuclear powered ships are definitely proven and it's be cool to see the tech put to a nonmilitary use - though the regulation/control aspect would be challenging to do safely.

I've seen the clipper ship Grain de Sail II, and I'll definitely check these ones out too! I really like seeing some proof that modernized sail (with fairly traditional-looking rigging) is viable, and especially seeing which cargoes and routes make it viable. I think that might be a good look at what makes for worthwhile shipping in a solarpunk setting (high value goods, ingredients that only grow effectively in certain areas, humanitarian aid, etc). I think some takes on adding sails are perhaps too unwilling to compromise on the massive container ship design, grasping for how to keep that format running rather than examining if we should.

I wrote about this on the photobash I mentioned, but I genuinely like the optimization and logistical advantage of using standardized, stackable shipping containers which fit on ships, trucks, and trains without the need to load and unload the cargoes by hand at each transition in their journey. That’s great stuff, no complaints. What I wonder about is if that cost efficiency has caused other problems. We ship cargo all over the world but much of the time, we do it because it’s so cheap to do so. We ship raw material from one continent to process it on another, we ship that material again so we can shape it into parts, which are shipped back to the second continent for partial assembly, and then for final assembly on a fourth. Is that efficient? It’s cost efficient. But we burn terrible amounts of fuel each time we do it, and we do it for so many things. I'm not sure if there's a green stand-in for that kind of dirt-cheap bulk shipping.

The Passat, the steel-hulled barque I borrowed parts from to make my last image (and its sibling ships) hauled nitrate, grain, concrete, and other stuff using a pretty traditional-looking hull (and loading it was apparently an important process which could and did lead to issues if done poorly. Like I said, most of the designs I've seen for container ships look a lot like regular ones with masts added on where they won't get too in the way. I'd like to find or work out a design that starts with a viable sail ship and tweaks it towards modern features, like a way to somehow still load cargo in shipping containers, without messing up its form/function.

Tidal power of some sort would be pretty solar punk. The big advantage is that it is much more predictable then wind.

Algaculture would be intressting as well. It is still relativly uncommon in the West.

For canals electric ships are an intressting option. Solar powered ferries are a thing, but also cable powered ferries.

In rivers reaction ferries are a wonderfull alternative. They use the flow of water to power the ferry over the river using nothing else but ropes. Really call and very much solarpunk.

Another one is swimming in canals and rivers. Especially in cities this is often not a good idea, due to bad water quality.

Commuting via boats and ferries. When you have a large river, why not commute to work via stand up paddling or in a kayak?

Also hydrofoils are pretty cool. They allow for greater speed on water.

Why USA progressives (solarpunks) should vote for Harris

“Why should I vote for Harris when she’s horrible?”

If you think voting for status-quo Democrats will fail to earn us systemic change, then great; we’re on the same page. That’s why we have to also create green infrastructure, form mutual-aid networks, and unionize. Seven unions signed a letter demanding no more bombs for I$53@1. That’s how the real change will come. Voting for Harris won’t impede that organizing and will even make it easier, as if Trump is elected, he’s likely to ban unions and terrorize your community on his double-time march to authoritarianism.

A vote for a third-party candidate or not voting at all will amount to the same thing: a Trump victory. And if he wins, I’m more likely to be disappeared, for projecting “fuck Trump”. SCOTUS has placed the President above the law, and he would feel no compunction at wielding that dictatorial power to snuff out activists, deport anyone, and restrict women’s rights, for starters.

Several people here have mentioned the genocide in Palestine, which I accept is a major issue and one no one should be dismissive of. Biden himself acknowledged the validity of the issue in his speech to the DNC.

I honestly find Biden's decision to keep spending so much money arming Israel baffling, but there is at least some chance Harris will change that policy.

But if Harris doesn't win the White House, Trump's policies will intensify the perescution of the Palestinians and also lead to pogroms, if not actual genocide, in the US and elsewhere.

I agree this is not a happy choice to have to make. But it's also quite clear which is the right choice.

Would you recommend compost toilets as a way to not waste human waste? I’m trying to imagine how that would work at city scale. Would communities cart the waste to their rooftop and nextdoor food forests? Would garage-truck style vehicles help in moving it?

Urbit is a decentralized personal server platform based on functional programming in a peer-to-peer network.

Am I having a stroke? What does "functional programming in a network" even mean? Does it mean anything? Do you torrent lambdas?

Weird ass names aside (Hoon sounds like a slur or is it just me?), they built two languages? Also what does "its" refer to here, Urbit's? From context it's as if Nock was Hoon's language, but that doesn't make semantical sense.

Also editorial note, just say "a pair" if there are two, not "a set"...

What. A "single-function operating system" doesn't even mean anything. Do they mean a unikernel? That at least is an actual term. And then what's that other thing? A "runtime implementation of an OS"? What's Arvo if it's not implemented or doesn't run, a fucking abstract painting of an OS?

And again, why do you need two languages to build this, it really seems you can have one? You're designing them from scratch anyway specifically to build this OS, why not make one proper language? Linus Torvalds barely had one and he managed.

In 2022, the main software in an Urbit installation was a "bare-bones" text-based message board.

And chaser:

Tlon, the company founded by Yarvin to build Urbit, has received seed funding from various investors since its inception, most notably Peter Thiel, whose Founders Fund, with venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz invested $1.1 million.

So they built an artificially complex architecture, to the point where half of its description sounds made up, took the most complex kinds software engineering projects (a programming language and an OS), did them twice for good measure, slapped on a blockchain to be cool and hip I guess, for absolutely no fucking reason whatsoever. They didn't have a use-case that would warrant any of this engineering effort, all they wanted was a message board, a problem we have solved in the fucking 90s (? Maybe earlier?).

But it's good enough for the Lich King and Egg Boi to give them a million fucking dollars. God I hope at least they boughy some quality drugs with that money or else this was a giant waste of resources.

Conclusion: the Wikipedia article on Urbit is absolute garbage. I feel like I know less about what the fuck this thing is after I read it. Can anyone tell me why any of this? Why did they do this? Why do they need a custom OS? Who hurt them so bad they came up with such shitty names for everything? Would you nock a hoon or is that too vere?

EDIT: Bonus question, how is this pronounced? Instinctively I read the U as in "uranium", but the article writes "an Urbit", so it's a short U like in "full"?

To me it looked like someone wrote some babble about the architecture and then a Responsible Adult came in and added the thinly veiled sneers of "all they built is a text board, Yarvin is a certified idiot, none of this works"

I might read the primary source on this tomorrow if I hate myself hard enough, I am fascinated by why you need two languages and two OS things to run a nazi chatroom, sounds like some absolute pinnacle of human lack of thought

EDIT: I guess the actual concept might be so insane that there's no way to write an article about it that makes sense and doesn't use expletives

Yeah, there's a number of people here who actually met Yarvin before he
1) became a complete asshole, you can not even imagine,
2) became a proud fascist and *monarchist*, and
3) lost his mind.

Many of us also have SW experience and have tried to look into Urbit and all came to the same conclusion - it all seems to be based on both giving stupid names to existing concepts, and blindly doing the opposite of whatever anybody has done before without regard to reason.
