Free hot water if you let us mount servers on your home tank

The initial concept developed by the company involved using heat generated by Bitcoin mining rigs, according to Heata Co-founder and CTO Chris Jordan.
"We literally put a Bitcoin miner in a barrel of mineral oil and plumbed it up to a radiator," he told The Register.

Edit, because I think folks may be confused due to the quote I put in. They are not installing crypto miners into water heaters. That was just their original inspiration. Sorry for the confusion.

"We're not looking at serving real time workloads, we're not doing websites, databases, message queue servers," Jordan explained. "Our ideal job is; here's a chunk of data, go and process that for some hours. And here's the result," he said.
This could still prove useful for 3D rendering workloads, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, and others where there is a lot of CPU or GPU processing, he claimed.

This is funded by the British government. So that hot water isn't so much free as funded by the British people.
From the article, it sounds like they're going to be using the customers Internet service.
This is not sending 100% of the heat into the hot water. You will be responsible for that excess heat. That's why these trials are being run during the winter time. Expect the cost to run your AC in the summer to go up.
Why would you wantonly let a billion dollar corporation into your home. When does that ever work out for people.
They are cutting a hole into the side of your hot water heater. If you or they decide not to continue with this who pays to repair that hole, I doubt it's the company.

I personally don't see a problem with the idea of doing something like that, but doing some sort of widespread rollout like they're proposing, I'd rather see "useful" work be done. But yeah, at the end of the day, if we can better utilize waste heat then that's good.

Someone shared this article with me after I mentioned the idea of crypto mining space heaters lol.

I just completed my first substantial sewing project, using a pattern from this site! My hems aren't the most even and the neckline was really tricky but I'm pretty happy with it. This is the Sven sweatshirt design, and I used a somewhat heavy knit cotton/polyester fabric. It fits great (as you'd hope!) and will probably become my new winter pajama shirt.

The site is great to use - there are good pictures for how to take each of the measurements you need, and I liked the ability to manually optimize the part layout to minimize the amount of paper it used. I saw a tip on YouTube to piece the pattern together by taping it to a large window or glass door so you can see the overlap between the sheets, and that worked great for me.

My next goal is to do a Simon shirt in flannel - decent step up in complexity so I might do a few other simpler projects first.

A street university for solarpunks, dreamers and activists is launching in the UK this February. The London School of Solarpunk (LSOS) is a space to invent new ways of urban living and find positive responses to the many crises we're facing.

Facilitated by the Idea Factory, it’s a 4-week programme taking place in Hackney for up to 15 participants. It will feature lectures ranging from social art to energy humanities as well as cooperative economies and creative activism. My clothes last me an unusual amount of time when compared with most people I think (15 year old tshirts) and don't really buy clothes at all unless something is at the limit of repairability or looking very bad.

I want to ride my bike more. I work from home so I use it mostly to go the gym but I want to use for more things. Like shopping and stuff like that. I'm thinking of buying an electric one to help out since I live in a city with steep hills and an electric one would make it more likely to use.

Given the state of the textile industry... make them yourself 🤷‍♂️

But you can get relatively far by repairing and patching stuff. Especially patches can make for nice upcycling of older or second hand clothes very much in the punk tradition.

There are also a few things you can buy from the outdoor industry that will last a while longer, but with a high upfront cost.

Well, yes, but there at least you can still find some better quality I think.

Edit: You can also go buy quite high quality stuff in those "work cloth" / "worker safety" shops, but they do look the part, so I don't think many people would want to walk around those normally. Not cheap either.

I don't know. I think I got lucky with a few pieces of clothing and mostly try to focus on quality long lasting stuff. But like I said I don't really buy much. My jeans are all pure denim and my tshirts tend to be heavier. And I think that's it. The only thing I notice that doesn't hold up very well is knitted sweaters. They tend to stretch over time.

If you live in or have a neighboring town that is middle or upper class (does not apply to super rich geographies) the second hand stores often have really nice quality clothes for dirt cheap. Church charity shops in the same geographies are a good resource too. I find that you ‘know it when ~~see~~ feel it’ in terms of which clothing items will last a long time. Better fabrics are usually a bit thicker and sturdier feeling.

Not ideal for undergarments or socks though.

We have solar panels and a backup battery for when the grid goes down. Our panels generate more than we generally use (we overbuilt on purpose) but we could run almost indefinitely as long as the panels are clear. There are two totes hooked up to a gutter on the back of our garage which provide 550 gallons of water storage that we use to water gardens and top up our duck pond. The ducks and chickens do most of our insect maintenance in the gardens.

I'm working on additional shelving in our cellar in order to be able to store more of our canning from the gardens; most of the material is reclaimed pallet wood from a nearby business. We've also got two slightly damaged solar panels that I'd like to use to circulate the water in the duck pond - pump and lift to flow through some uphill garden space back down to the pond after it's been filtered by the plants - and to provide some power to the bird coop for water heaters and maybe a light source.

We got ours from a larger farm nearby a few years ago - they had purchased a soy based fertilizer and the distributor didn't have any return/recycle incentives so the farmer was selling them on the cheap. I think we found the guy through the farm & garden craigslist section but I can't really speak to how reliable that is anymore. If you've got a winter farmers market around you it might be worth asking around there (I'm loathe to suggest fb marketplace but if you're already there that might be convenient as well)

Well, I'm in the process of internally overboarding with 50mm PIR sheets for added insulation, added 200mm fibreglass into each floor of my house, and 150mm PIR on top of my flat roofs.

And have just had a heat pump installed, frustratingly, still haven't quite worked out how to properly drive the thing yet so am rather cold currently.

Last weekend I went to a local non-profit event of resistance against the far-right. Yesterday I got a call to help form a citizen's list for the next municipal elections.

To think that I went as far as rural Japan to find the things that I was looking for and that they were waiting for me in my native country (France), just next to where my parents live.

I am living my life in such a way that I mostly get to choose to use my time to do what I want, in ways that work for my bodymind. I participate in my community with my chosen family. I don't buy things that I don't actually need, I try to make due with what I have, and fix things that need fixing and mend things that need mending as much as possible. I write and create and share knowledge and skills freely and help others, especially for causes that are life-affirming and nourishing of people and planet. I live in a walkable community connected with electric trains. I cook and eat fresh, healthy, mostly locally sourced foods. I strive to move through the world in ways that spread hope, joy, beauty, love, connection, and awareness.

I am fortunate to be able to live in a country where all of this is more possible than the country I came from. I want more people to be able to experience this life (and to be able to maintain it myself, which is admittedly looking a bit dicey these days.) I want this more slow, mindful, and convivial way of life to be normalized as the "good life."

We have solar panels, battery backup and a plug in hybrid car. It gets us just about anywhere locally we need to go without needing gas. We just got a 3d printer and I'm already thinking of dozens of things around the house I can fabricate now. We have a VR I can use to work out downstairs (beat saber!). Not to mention this cool miniature computer with internet access I can use anywhere I go.

Hoping to add a garden in the next year or so to grow herbs, fruits and veggies.

We live in a small village with a bakery and a local farmer store at walking distance from the house.

I'm working remotely in a repurposed train station. The whole station had been turned into a third space last year and quite a lot of events are happening there.

Today there was a presentation of different initiatives happening in the valley, i found two initiatives particularly interesting.

The first one is a cooperative ISP provider, I'll change my provider to join them.

The second one is another cooperative that is installing renewable energy and offering "collective self consumption". To simplify it: when my neighbor's solar panels are overproducing I can buy it directly from him. The rest of the time I'm using electricity from my regular provider.

Except that in this case it's organized in the scale of several villages.

I live in the most sustainable city on the planet, Gothenburg, Sweden. And one of the most environmentally friendly apartment buildings in that city. The building is a special project where they test new sustainability stuff and other cool tech and things. Not sure I'm comfortable linking to a page about the building, as it shows photos and the exact location, but I wrote more extensively about it a couple of months back so I'll go find that comment as soon as I have time and add it here.

Other than that, I'm vegan, only buy second hand clothes, furniture, kitchenware etc. I only walk, bike and use trams. Most devices I get secondhand and use till they're unrepairable (or at least would cost more to repair than get another secondhand one) and if I ever find like a phone real cheap before my current one is dead I give it away to family or friends that need it. There's a lot more minor things, and probably stuff I'm forgetting.

I've had and have a hard life where I can't do most of the things I want due to anxiety, so I'm extremely proud to have gotten to where I am with

I am trying to do self hosted services and storage at home for my digital stuff. This helps minimize e-waste since I follow a model of upgrade my primary device, then deprecate the previous system to hosting duty
we do composting and try to do as much zero waste food as possible
I garden for polinators and vegetables in the free space around our house. I have some grass for the kids/dog but we use no chemicals on any of our plants/yard
2 50 gallon rain barrels
goal for next year is partial solar and additional waste reduction.
I also started a job that is ~1 mile from home vs 37 each way so my fuel consumption basically dropped to 0

May be: I own a FrameWork laptop (bought the older generation new, because it is fast enough for me, but I want to support them). Also I self host a couple of web services myself (music streaming, file storage, RSS). I also live in a shared flat (although I could afford my own appartment) and take the bike to go everywhere in the city.

I don't really know how much it would cost today to build a reactor. If you're technical, you can build a reactor out of scrap. If you can weld, you can make a better one. I think the hardest part is just sourcing reliable used fryer oil from restaurants.

The front of my house faces southwest. On a sunny afternoon, when it is freezing outside, my house is well enough insulated that the sunlight entering through my front windows and storm door can raise the temperature inside by several degrees Fahrenheit. By closing the prime front door, and covering my windows with insulated plugs, it takes several hours to lose those degrees of heat.

I ride my bike to work when I can, its only 5 miles and 4 miles of it are on a car-free bike path. Another half-mile will soon be on a protected bike path in 2027.

The LA Fires Aren't a Surprise If You Study History and Climate Change. So Now What?

Last June, Pasadena, California — about 11 miles from downtown Los Angeles — decreed that June 22 was Octavia E. Butler Day, in honor of the science fiction writer born in the city on that date in 1947. The Pasadena middle school Butler attended was renamed for her in 2022.

Butler, who died in 2006, has in the past few years been celebrated nationally, including posthumous profiles in the New York Times, New York magazine, and more. Particular attention has been paid to the prescience of her Parable series of books. Organizers and artists, like adrienne maree brown, spent the 2010s calling attention to Butler’s work — and her warnings.

The first book in the series, Parable of the Sower, published in 1993, begins on July 20, 2024, the 15th birthday of Butler’s protagonist, Lauren Oya Olamina. I may be wrong as I haven't read closely, but I don't believe anyone is surprised by these fires. Growing up in the area, fire burned those same areas more than once during my school years. It's chaparral and it is supposed to burn every 10 years or so. But like anytime else it's a big deal when it hits your (or a celebrity) neighborhood vs a couple miles away, and the biggest difference is over the last few decades is that they keep building higher and higher into the mountain, so what used to just be a wildfire is now a neighborhood burning down.

Not just "a neighborhod" but several including predominently black neighborhoods as the article points out. This is far from a natural disaster and many are actively trying to claim it is. Indigenous peoples performed controlled burns that prevented this prior to colonization. The article is very brief but points this out. It's an entire ecosystem impacted not just celebrities and Octavia Butler made some predictions that were frighteningly astute without trying to say that we are doomed to repeat this.

Ok, thanks for the added context. My point is the same things were said about the Altadena fire when I was in high school nearby, the same year as her first Parable book was published. Fire was not new to the area then, either.

I hear you. That regional history must have been part of Butler's inspiration or at least influenced it. I'm not as familiar with the geography of the area as I live in the Northeast so I appreciate your perspective. It seems as though many people saw this as inevitable and it's a tragic wake up call for others who ignored history. Thanks for sharing the link.

I'm assuming that the response is going to be similar to that of the NYC area's response to Hurricane Sandy.

Building and fire codes start to get updated in the region. This likely creates a few new classes of fire resistance ratings, including ratings that assume a lack of city water to fight a fire. For the highest ratings, wood is effectively banned. Given how cheap wood is to build with compared to other materials, this will drive up rebuilding costs.

The ratings get tied to new maps developed by an entity to determine fire risk. These maps will become very politically charged and may be dependent on local firefighting capacity. A lot of libertarians are going to hate having to pay for either sky high insurance or higher property tax to fund firefighters.

Development of the codes and maps take years, with significant input from insurance companies on what they may cover. There may be state involvement in insurance, similar to how flood insurance is a government insurance given how government policy affects risk.

Januar, Februar, März: viel zu viel abgenommen.
April und Juni wieder auf das vorherige Gewicht zurück, den Rest des Jahres habe ich mein Gewicht gehalten.

Wie gut hat das Jahresthema funktioniert?

Dieses Jahr war mein großes Thema „Gesundheit“. Ohne dieses Thema hätte ich vermutlich mein Herzproblem erst viel z spät behandeln lassen. So konnte mein Problem – eine koronare Herzkrankheit – - mit einem einfachen Herzkatheter eingegrenzt und mit Hilfe eine Stents gelöst werden. Haare länger oder kürzer?

Anders – keine Ahnung ob das als länger oder kürzer durch geht. Ich glaube insgesamt ein wenig länger, sind aber nach wie vor kurz.

Kurzsichtiger oder weitsichtiger?

Letztes Jahr hatte ich ja endlich Kontaktlinsen und was ist passiert? Ich habe nun eine Lesebrille, die ich verwende, wenn ich die Linsen trage. Meine Augen werden wohl alt und ich werde mich in 2025 um Gleitsichtlinsen bemühen.

I'm not going to write a full review here but I really enjoyed it. It looks incredible, had strong Solarpunk and Half-Earth implications. It's emotional yet honest and mature. Animals look and act great as well. You should watch it.

@pfefferle@mastodon.social Thought you might be interested... I attempted to follow @evanprodromou@socialwebfoundation.org from NodeBB and found a fun little race condition!

NodeBB sends the follow and waits for the request to complete before recording the details of the follow (for backreferencing the eventual accept).
WordPress seems to fire back the Accept, and then wraps up the response.

I imagine a lot of implementors do the same, but it just so happens that WordPress' response time (or at least the swf site's) is juuust slow enough to reliably have the Accept come in before the Follow finishes.

So NodeBB hadn't recorded the follow request when it received the Accept, so the follow failed :laughing:

I've adjusted my code now so the backreference is saved before sending the Follow.

Just living my little solarpunk life

Kia ora! I'm just another solarpunk in Aotearoa looking for other like-minded friends, inspiration, and advice on other ways I can green up my life.

I live in an off-grid tiny home I built with my partner in 2016 out of wood and second-hand windows/doors/appliances. We run off solar power, rain water, a composting toilet, and try to repair, mend, make, borrow, and buy 2nd hand or local. Our meat is all hunted, which here in Aotearoa is a huge help for our environment as our only native mammals are seals and bats. Everything else is a pest. We also grow a lot of our own fruit and veggies, but the garden is still a work in progress.

I don't have a blog but I do post little snippets on the big social media platforms. They aren't super detailed as I'm trying to use my aesthetic appeal to drag unsuspecting viewers down my leftist rabbithole. I'm currently an unemployed author under contract, but I don't get paid until it's out. The economy is rough here at the moment. My partner works in forestry, and I'm hoping to pick up a 2nd shift apple grading this autumn.

Seriously though, if you're looking into stuff like this, you should go asking questions around the Marijuana cultivation community. There's actually been a massive upsurge in the last 5-7 years of projects using off the shelf components like Raspberry Pi's to essentially automate their cannabis grows. Some of them are related to home assistant, some are standalone.

Yeah, I'm all for people using cannabis if it helps them, but I think with us on the brink of climate collapse with failing soils... maybe it's time we utilise some of that tech for local food systems.

I unfortunately couldn't tell you which communities to search in, because it always seemed to pop up on my radar in random feeds on places like reddit, hackernews, and slashdot. hackernews and slashdot both have slightly better search functions than reddit. I just know on reddit they were usually marijuana-related communities.

doesn't seem like it needs to increase the electric usage by that much, you only need a RasberryPi or equivalent to run the server, and you control everything with your phone... the outlets and solenoids shouldn't need much power to do their thing. I saw earlier today how many options for EVs are available in South America (anywhere outside the US imperial core, actually) and it was a bit shocking. The conversion to EV business seems like a great idea - especially if they can standardize replacement parts that would be amazing.

Home assistant is great for home automation stuff like lights and cameras and AC and such but for controlling your water system you might want something less complex / more purpose-designed. There are many arduino-based projects for doing exactly what you're looking for - arduinogetstarted.com/tutorial… or instructables.com/Automatic-Pl… are two i just looked up real quick. I'm sure it would be possible with assistant as well though if you just wanted to centralize.

My partner goes hunting a couple time a week but mostly to feed families in our village and help our forests stay past free. I spend a few hours a day in the garden or with the birds, but most of my time is spent with my daughter or working on various community projects. I don't have a paying job at the moment but I'm looking to take some apple sorting shifts this season while the emergency communications for vulnerable people start-up I'm a part of sorts funding.

Our cost of living is much lower. No utility bills. The rate on our property is lower. Our mortgage is lower. We have no meat or eggs to buy and most our veggies are sorted as well. We do have higher start up costs like sorting a solar set up and rainwater system. It takes money or connections for naterials to get started

The hydro soil system sounds ideal! I really like data which is why I'm hoping for a system with some reporting features but maybe i start simple and add as I go.

Working in some local community groups mainly focused on urban greening and safe streets. I am a leader in one of them, and more of an active supporter in others. I recently connected with a group focused on native plants and restoration/gardening for biodiversity.

I’d also like to get more involved with groups focusing on climate activism, Palestinian liberation, lgbtq rights, shielding immigrants from the coming violence, and mutual aid. But that’s a lot of topics and it remains aspirational at this point.

Recently met with my local pastor to see how we could include kids/teens in community programs that intersect with the church. One of the major hurdles is that kids have new expectations around how to meet up--especially online--and the few touch points during the week are in person only. I don't agree with this article, but I really appreciate the work of one historian mentioned at the end in the Reference section.

Fernand Braudel decided to take a look at history from a different point of view, especially in relation to time. Instead of talking about specific dates of big events and big names, he decided to look at the conditions of everyday life of common people (food, shelter, human interactions, work etc) who lived around the time that these big events happened, and draw conclusions taking these factors into consideration.

For example one of his takes on why capitalism was created in Europe and not Asia or the Americas, is related to dietary habits, cultivation and transportation methods of wheat, rice and corn respectively.

I'm not too sure of the english title of the book I'm talking about, cause I read it in french and the title was very different to the ones I find in english (La dynamique du capitalism).

Vielleicht guckt Elon Musk ja mal wieder in der Tesla Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg vorbei. Nach einer Anzeige ob der Beleidigung des Staatsoberhauptes und Ermittlungen durch die Staatsanwaltschaft wäre dann die (polizeiliche) Durchsetzung einer Vorladung möglich.

Auch Telegram-Chef Pawel Durow hat nach dem Verlassen seines Privatjets auf europäischem Boden lernen dürfen, dass hier selbst Superreiche sich Befragungen durch die Justiz nicht dauerhaft entziehen können.

We move for jobs, and for family, really good friends are a sincerly precious thing, and are at least as important as those reasons to move.

The article makes a similar point, overlapping with the ”the extended family we chose" argument, both of which have some merit.

However, personally I have experienced that friendships are a product of the circumstances and old friends are often only held together by nostalgia for the times when circumstances brought them together. Thus as a result of this, I think continuing friendships like described in the article isn't that much different from finding new friendships when the circumstances allow it.

I agree with your points. Though for me a big difference has been friends I made before ~25 and friends after 25. There is no way I would want to live anywhere near friends I made before that age. Being in my early thirties, who knows how I'll feel 10 years down the line. Doing this communal living is a big commitment which might be hard to get out of.

Same! Pre / post uni friends is the rough line for me. I have one friend from school still, a few from uni but the rest is more recent than that.

Still, I'd argue (re the previous post but my reply fit better here) that even the "nostalgia friends" aren't any different from birth family.

I hear that. But my wife and I regularly debate about the role of family. I don't know if it's more American culture to view family as more "disposable", e.g. they can be cut-off if toxic, etc. Being originally an (eastern) European, my mentality is that family (or blood-bonds to be dramatic) are always more serious than friends. To that end, I always thought having a large villa with multiple wings for multi-generational housing would be more appealing. My mother and wife (stereotype much?) don't get along, so maybe a challenging proposition...

For me family is a difficult topic, since I'd like to cut some out but i dont have the heart to go through with it fully.

American culture is changing. It used to be that family bonds were the tightest, and we had generational housing, but that started going away during the great depression when a lot of family farms shut down and people lost the house they'd been in for generations. We also don't like to talk about the amount of generational trauma that came from both the world wars, and that was another nail in the coffin of family life. The most recent blow has been the economy, where both parents need to work and don't have the time to build the bonds with their children that are needed for a tight-knit family unit.

The idea of the family is so pernicious when it is used to justify abuse and avoiding responsibility and consequences of bad behavior. Cutting people off when they're consistently being harmful assholes shouldn't be contigent upon blood relation or any other kind of personal or group association and all the people selling "family is forever" or "traditional family values" are doing it because they themselves are the abusive asshole that doesn't want to be cut out

I would love to, and when I buy a house sometime in the future that is a major consideration for me. Unfortunately, right now I have to live where I can afford to. I have had to move almost every year since graduating college and have never been able to take that into consideration due to finances. Even now, hubby and I will likely be given his parents' current house that is much further away from our friends, and we are taking the opportunity because we can't afford not to.

I don't think many people have a choice. You know at one point parents went way out of their way to encourage kids to live close by but that seemed to change to when your 18 your out of the house. In college I thought about how it would be so awesome to live in something like a dorm in a city where everyone in the dorm were people you gelled with.

It also prevented the Thalidomide medication from causing much damage in the usa (compared to the rest of the world) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thalid… and prob countless more, as it is a bit hard to cause problems if the problems are caught before it being brought to market. And I do worry that the "the fda is too cautious" pushers are actually motte baileying for the total removal of the fda.

We have a new show starting in January 2025. Open Web Conversations where we talk about the Fediverse and Emerging Tech.

Just when you thought we couldn’t do a new show. Well, with some shuffling and some new hosts, it was inevitable.

Open Web Conversations

The backstory on this is simple. Matthias Pfefferle, the creator behind the ActivityPub plugin for WordPress has done quite a bit of work here on our site to get us on the Fediverse. With his knowledge, personality and background, well, I didn’t give it a second thought about asking him to join the team.

Having learned more about the Fediverse, I personally became even more intrigued and interested. Thus was the beginning of pulling together our new show, Open Web Conversations.
