Looking for a step-by-step or ELI5-type guide on how to disconnect from the power grid and go full solar on a 4-bedroom house.

I know very little about in-depth electrical work so I would definitely need professional electrician assistance, but I am looking for a sort of "how to disconnect from the power company" and go full solar? I understand that it's becoming much less expensive to purchase and maintain, and I would like to free myself from $300/month electrical payments on my residence.

If it helps, I live in the mideast USA.

Any help is really appreciated! :)

I believe Apple play the Privacy card as it's their best excuse to reduce intraoperatively and maintain their lockin/walled garden under the disguise of "we care about your privacy" (and don't want to compete on features, UX an especially price)

That's not the only reason: Apple is still very largely a hardware manufacturer, and given that Android is a freebie *from an advertising company that wants to harvest everyone's personal data* it was an easy way for Apple to differentiate themselves from the rest of the smartphone duopoly.

Map of ecological thought [in french]

Accompanying article [fr] bonpote.com/la-carte-des-pense…

Sorry this is in French but I think many movements have a similar enough name that English speakers will understand what "écosocialisme" or "écologies anti-industrielles" means. A note though: "libertaire" is not "libertarian" it is closer to "liberal" with a stronger left-wing bias.

I found it interesting because while they mention that it is extremely hard to make such a map and that it has tons of very debatable links and placement, I still see solarpunks being all over the left 2/3 of the map.

Als Antwort auf keepthepace

This is pretty cool thx. I like how they include both the researcher and their seminal works. It also helped me find another researcher that was into low tech other than Philippe Bihouix. I wonder why most researchers that are into that are French?

This map was made by French so it may have a bias there. But I know there is a very active lowtech community here in France. As a techno-utopian I spent a long time ignoring them until someone told me that the raspberry pi is lowtech and that I am doing lowtech robotics (wth?) . Here it basically seems to be a synonym for open hardware, with an emphasis on community rather than projects. It is actually pretty chill.

Agenda Prep for October WG Meeting

Agenda preparation for the October ForumWG meeting can be found at this public link (anyone can make comments for review.)

Monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month, at 1700 to 1800 UTC. You can find them listed in the SocialCG Calendar. The next meeting will be held on 3 October 2024.

We will be continuing onwards with discussions regarding context resolution. Multiple FEPs touch on the subject and there is an opportunity for potential convergence towards a single (or pair) of FEPs that share enough commonalities to allow for interoperability.

As always — time permitting — if you'd like to speak or inquire about a certain topic, comment in the agenda or reply here, the floor is open!

  • Is open source
  • Can be run using FOSS
  • Can use recycled plastic as its material

Yes, Actually, Individual Responsibility Is Essential to Solving the Climate Crisis

A fixation on system change alone opens the door to a kind of cynical self-absolution that divorces personal commitment from political belief. This is its own kind of false consciousness, one that threatens to create a cheapened climate politics incommensurate with this urgent moment.

[...]

Because here’s the thing: When you choose to eat less meat or take the bus instead of driving or have fewer children, you are making a statement that your actions matter, that it’s not too late to avert climate catastrophe, that you have power. To take a measure of personal responsibility for climate change doesn’t have to distract from your political activism—if anything, it amplifies it.

I have been on this hill for years, ever since the whole "recycling does nothing" attitude became popular.

People who make these individual lifestyle changes are more likely to advocate for holistic change. Meanwhile those who adopt a cynical take on environmentalism are more likely to disengage entirely. This seems incredibly obvious to me.

whatever their fetish is, they'll die on that hill defending it instead of changing.

Think about it: their own children will pick up the tab, be the ones who suffer the worst for these silly fucking games, and they literally don't care. THEIR OWN KIDS. Zero fucks given. When they don't even care about the future shitshow their own kids will have to suffer, what leverage can be found?

@techtakes I suspect steady/incremental returns mean dwindling asset value in the current business environment, typified by rapid churn and major tech transitions every decade (to say nothing of climate change and an unstable global political situation). If 10% of your investment portfolio becomes non-viable every decade (eg. no good owning coal fields any more) you have to grow fast or die. At least, that's how the investment funds see it.

`Update(Note)` quirk

Today I tagged the v4.0.0-beta.2 release purely to fix a single issue — Update(Note) federation.

It turns out that just sending the Update(Note) activity was not enough, the underlying object needed to also have the updated field set in order to Mastodon to process the update. My guess is Mastodon checks that field and only processes the note if the value is greater than the last known value.

I'd write it off as a Mastodon-ism, but it's actually better to have that property present, so now it is.

Edit — does anyone know if Mastodon handles Update(Tombstone)? I sent one and Mastodon didn't do anything, which is technically ok. NodeBB handles it like a soft delete and removes it from public view.

(A few of my novels have been sold as limited-run signed first editions. Typically for 50%-100% more than the normal hardcover price, so maybe 3-5% as much as this nonsense. Cost of goods for a leatherbound, gilt-trimmed luxury edition is maybe $5-10, plus 10% of the cover price for the author. So someone in the middle is making serious bank.)

Your term of art in economics to describe this shitbaggery is "Veblen goods": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veblen_g…

This was so stupid.

A hijacking happens when passengers overflow into the cockpit from the cabin.

Oh no! A little kid has been invited to have a look! Passenger overflow! Hijacking!

His attempt at solution isn't as cringe worthy, if one overlooks the reasoning. Separating the cabin from the pilots is a way of preventing hijacking that has been attempted, but it has problems. Notably if the pilots get acute medical emergency or indeed if the pilot steer the plane into the ground.

Some ten years ago a french pilot locked out his second and ran the plane into the ground. For increased safety the after 911 the door to the cabin could only be opened from the inside.

Also of note: the Helios Airways Flight 522 disaster. This is totally not about growth hacking or engagement 🤔
Users see some content, click on it, then end up with a new UI, see a reply button, click on it, and are asked to create a new account, or to sign up (but not with their initial account). Our user testing (and many feedback) points that this is a very common issue with AP federation at the moment, even between Mastodon instances.
Not many people understand what is the federation and how to work around it

I totally agree with @renchap that it is important to keep the user on the platform of his/her choice! I like the idea of having a better "read more" UX or maybe the lightbox idea.

But to have the best possible experience and to improve the engagement, you should not force the user to leave the platform.

Otherwise it feels very much like subscribing to an RSS-Feed with only excerpts, where you always have to leave the reader for reading the whole text!

How Agroforestry Could Help Revitalize America’s Corn Belt

Als Antwort auf ODGreen

A few points I would like to make:

  1. Soil degradation of corn:soy systems is largely due to tillage. No till is better, but perhaps not as good as agroforestry
  2. Proponents of agroforestry often gloss over the changes required to actually practice it. Where a farmer can use large combines to harvest corn and soy relatively easily, he now has trees interrupting harvest, or its harder to harvest the diverse cropping systems (e.g., food bearing trees). While the benefits of argo forestry are real, so are the challenges.
  3. Soil C sequestration from these systems is most likely temporary, and net neutral, but will reduce input costs
  4. We need to switch away from beef - eat more chikn
Als Antwort auf Track_Shovel

Even better, don't eat chicken either. Chicken still takes up more land simply by requiring land to grow feed. Anything plant-based will be a better solution.
Als Antwort auf Landsharkgun

I don't know why you were downvoted; you are right. Plant based is the way to go, and I say this as your typical omnivorous white dude. Until we get more buy in from people (changing diets) and from corporations, it's unlikely to change, though.
Als Antwort auf ODGreen

Large parts of the corn palt are prarie and should be grass as far as eye can see. Corn is a grass.
Als Antwort auf bluGill

Corn has very shallow roots and aggressively pulls nitrogen out of the soil. Prairie plants are much more diverse than just grasses and many have very deep root networks extending down 6+ ft. Corn fields are nothing like a prairie habitat.
Als Antwort auf bluGill

The area this article is talking about was oak savannah:

Within these oak savannas, which were interlaced with prairies, tree crowns covered between 10 percent and 30 percent of the ground. They were essentially a transition between the tight deciduous forests of the East and the fully open grasslands further west.

Solarpunk Writing Prompt: The Tailors - how can clothing look like in a sustainable world post fast fashion? What is the tailor's role within a community?

A new Tailor joins a community which has lacked one for years. In a world of distributed manufacturing tailors are no longer just artisans, but educators, material and sustainability experts, fashion designers and translators of cultures, making sure no garment offends others when traveling. Seeing that they’re much less traditional than their predecessor, will they be accepted by the community? Which bold statement surprised everybody?

Als Antwort auf alxd

Tailors and Seamstresses are going to be very important unless a lot of people learn how to make and mend clothes
Als Antwort auf alxd

I would expect it to look a lot like fashion of the early 20th century for the working class. Clothes would naturally be baggier with greater ability to alter the clothing at certain locations to fit people wearing the clothes. The clothes would likely be made to be more durable on the understanding that undershirts and longer underwear would be worn underneath.

Since clothes would be owned and worn longer, fashion wouldn't shift as much. You would also see more second hand stores as it was common for the rich to sell or give clothes away to staff once it dropped out of fashion.
