Are you talking about disconnecting power entirely, or just generating as much as possible yourself?
Because the first, depending on local laws, is going to be something you can't necessarily do and keep your occupancy permit and be allowed to stay living in the house.
The other is going to be a matter of figuring out your maximum power requirements and sizing a solar and battery system big enough to fill your needs.

I did not spend $23,000 on batteries, because that would have been (and the math has tracked afterwards) more than a decade payback time, which was longer than the manufacturer specs indicated that I could expect the batteries to last.
I'm sure prices have decreased some in the last 2 years, but solar panels aren't too badly priced, but the rest of the storage stuff around it was just a bit too expensive to make any real sense unless I was somewhere doing the no-grid life, which isn't the case here.

You might want to first identify your main power consumption and at what time this occurs. 300$ seems very high in general, but if that is for example mostly AC usage during the day, you might be able to not have to buy as large of a battery since peak consumption coincidences with peak production.
I live on a cruising sailboat and have bought gear from Sun Electronics in Miami Lakes, Fl a few times.
They'll sell you A panel or pallet after pallet of every conceivable type and manufacturer and power rating. There is no sales tax in Florida on anything having to do with solar power, so that could also save you some money.
These are examples, and as you start to learn more about the different components and choices (lead acid vs LifePo4 batteries, or home built or store bought, EV powerwall, etc etc) you'll see your prices change.

For real totally disconnecting from the power grid is a bad idea. That means you need a lot more equipment and battery storage. This increases the investment significantly, without much upside. It also prevents you from selling the power you generate but don't need back to the power company (but depending on where you live this might not be a thing due to overproduction).

I would analyse the power usage and see where you can save money on. 300 per month seems very high. Where I live energy is much more expensive than in the US and my bill is closer to 100 per month.
Just call a company, have some panels installed for say 2500-5000 bucks depending on how much room you have on the roof and if you need upgrades to your power system. This will save you at least 50 per month on the bill. But be aware the ROI will be on the order of 10-15 years at least and more if you are unlucky. Saving energy is free and means money in your pocket right away.

Yes, the "Only" allowable SMS app which also happens to replace SMS with rich and secure instant messaging, as long as you own an Apple device. I believe Apple play the Privacy card as it's their best excuse to reduce intraoperatively and maintain their lockin/walled garden under the disguise of "we care about your privacy" (and don't want to compete on features, UX an especially price)

This map was made by French so it may have a bias there. But I know there is a very active lowtech community here in France. As a techno-utopian I spent a long time ignoring them until someone told me that the raspberry pi is lowtech and that I am doing lowtech robotics (wth?) . Here it basically seems to be a synonym for open hardware, with an emphasis on community rather than projects. It is actually pretty chill.

According to the article Australians are the worst in the world for clothing waste, on average buying 56 clothing items per person per year. That is fucking insane. I would say on average I buy maybe two clothing items per year. In my poverty time there were many years where that number was zero.

Danach kamen die Nachrichten, in denen ich erfahren habe, dass Kris Kristofferon gestorben ist. Kris war einer der vier Sänger der Highwaymen (er singt den Part des Sailors in Highwayman), zusammen mit Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash und Waylon Jennings. Er war außerdem ein Army Ranger Medic, wie ich, flog Helis in Deutschland, und seine Musik hat mich durch Ranger School und das gesamte Leben danach begleitet.
Heute habe ich einen „Lauen“ tagsüber, aber heute Abend geht’s wieder auf die Straße. Was zum Oktoberfest halt auch immer bedeutet, dass sich die Gefährdungsprofile ändern, genau wie die Fälle die wir bekommen. Etwa um 2018 trafen sich die Großen der Android-Hersteller-Szene auf einem, von Google gehosteten, Gipfeltreffen, um die Fragen der Zeit zu beantworten.

Use a connection pool for federation - rather than making a new network connection to send an Activity, PieFed will reuse an existing connection where possible. This has less overhead and results in faster federation.

New theme - "card shadow" - this quickly became a favorite among the dev team and both freamon and myself use it. It's basically the same as the default except there are shadows behind things, giving a more 3D look to the interface and giving a bit more visual hierarchy. Admin page - instance administration - there is a table showing all the instances you're federating with and stats for each instance.
Profile export - PieFed has had the functionality to import settings from a Lemmy profile for a long time but now it's possible to go the other way and export settings from PieFed to Lemmy.

Fixed a very annoying bug where enabling the markdown editor emptied the text input field
Changed the home page so there are now separate sorting and filtering options, making the 'Popular' and 'All' home pages obsolete. They have been removed from the main menu.
Added a 'dev tools' page so developers can easily create large amounts of dummy content to test with
As you can see we don't have a lot of really big news to share, lately. It nearly feels like a good time to call an end to the beta test phase of PieFed's development and formally release a version. With that in mind, over the next little while, we will focus on stability and bug fixes so the first release is something people can stick with without immediately getting back on the dev branch treadmill.
Technically, there is no mobile app for PieFed but there is a way that you can get something that is almost the same. PieFed is a ‘Progressive Web App’ meaning it is a website that can be installed into your phone as if it was a real app.

Every day people in my metro region buy 4 trailers worth of cheap plastic shit from one company a lot of people haven't even heard of. You all really don't see that as a problem? And then those guys go lobbying and politicians kick the can right down the road. It is how it was, how it is, and how it will be
There's a better way to frame all this: change comes from within. We obviously have to vote and pay attention to politics and speak up to our elected officials because that's how "not being ruled by a monarch" works. But ultimately all real changes, even in the world, come from within.
But the thing is, money speaks to politicians. That's why we're in this mess in the first place. For example, we passed regulations on a bunch of forever chemicals, 3M successfully lobbied for exemptions and got a bunch of exemptions. Then they got caught dumping a bunch of PFAS and they say "oopsie" and pay a 10 billion dollar fine and everything is good again (for them, not for us). But they're only doing that because people give 3M money. 3M only exists because of money. No money = no 3M. Delete these pieces of shit simply by withholding from them
A lot of people (surprisingly) aren't on the same page and think that begging for policy change can somehow bring about policy change or don't acknowledge the relationship of consumer and corporation in a zero sum environment. I was ranting in a different thread about the "discourses of delay" that corporate and right-wing propagandists use to delay climate action. And the fascinating thing is, the idea that only individual consumption matters (the BP carbon footprint ad campaign) and the idea that only the actions of corporations matter (a typical American activist attitude) are both industry propaganda. The former is meant to discourage political action. The latter is meant to discourage individual action. And by framing it as one against the other, propagandists discourage us from taking effective action on either.

The people who do have the money to make better climate decisions with their spending are definitely in a better position to make more free decisions, but, again, companies have not designed products to have interchangeable parts or to be repairable at all. Often times alternatives just simply do not exist.
Cell phones, laptops, cars, etc. are all basically required for people in the US because of decisions that individuals have no control over.
And finally, the distribution of impact of an individual is heavily skewed toward the rich. The changes that poorer people can make do have some impact, and there are knock-on effects that make those impacts stronger, but to frame this as the fault of anyone outside of capitalists and their pet politicians is pretty disingenuous.
In short, people usually can't make free decisions about how they spend their money, and even if they could, they don't have all the information they need to make good decisions, and they are actively being fed mis/disinformation to further keep them in the dark. To blame them is probably wrong, and to think that individual action is worth putting effort into at the cost of collective and political action is a bad idea. It should really only be a supplement.
The line is reduce, reuse and then recycle for a reason. Not buying something and buying second hand are affordable for everybody. Unfortunatly the later takes more time.

None of this even touches on the carefully targeted advertising on social media that primes people to have the kind of consumption behavior that fuels these companies to begin with.
Nowhere local stocks the parts to repair most second-hand items. Parts for older items are often hard to find because they are no longer made. I mean, you're replying to someone who builds repairable versions of such items. Why do you think that is necessary?
Do you have the skill-set to do as they do? For instance, I build my own air purifiers using standard HVAC filters and PC fans for myself and friends/family (so that they have have repairable units that use standard parts), and often 3M filters are the only performant ones that I can buy while avoiding Amazon, another company worth boycotting. In addition to that, 3M products are used in sooo much stuff these days that it's very easy to support them without knowing about it.
For Starbucks, I know of quite a few towns where Starbucks is the only coffee shop (because they aggressively forced out the competitors), and there is no library or similar public space available. I'm sure as hell not going to tell the people of that town

The study it's referencing studied only fossil fuel producers. And it credited all emissions from anyone who burned fuel from that producer to that producer. So if I buy a tank of gas from Chevron and burn it, my emissions are credited to Chevron for purposes of that study.
The study is not saying that 100 companies emit 71% of global emissions. It's saying that 100 companies produce 71% of the fossil fuels used globally.
Why wouldn’t Chevron be responsible for the emissions for the fuel they provide? The fossil fuel industry has entrenched themselves and made it as difficult as possible to not use their products. Even to go so far as to influence how our cities are built.
I'd love to not use any fossil fuels but I can’t afford solar panels or a heat pump so I have to either burn gas or my family freezes to death. I have to get my electricity from coal because my family can’t survive without electricity.

When purchasing new appliances, choose more efficient appliances over less efficient one's. Replace all your incandescent lightbulbs with LEDs. Limit your use of air conditioning to reasonable temperatures. Choose energy-saving programs for your washing machine and hang your clothes outside to dry when it's warm instead of using a dryer.
Stop driving unnecessarily. If there is decent enough public transit, use it instead of a car even if it takes longer. If the distances are short, use a bicycle. Choose food that causes fewer carbon emissions - locally grown vegetables are the best in that regard.
On its own none of these matter. Combined however they will significantly reduce your emissions. None of these cause significant sacrifices.
Not only should we ban plastic straws, we should continuously ban more and more plastic. First plastic straws, then plastic bags, then plastic packaging. The systematic change will happen either gradually or spontaneously. I prefer the latter but if the former is all we have it must be encouraged as much as possible.
I am not opposed to any of those things they are all good.
I just think articles like this are made to get everyone to focus on the least impactful things, by putting too much emphasis on the individual’s carbon footprint.

While this is basically true, what it ignores is the impact personal decisions make on the ethos around us to build support for legal pressure. I have family that doesn't disbelieve climate change but isn't motivated by it, and by us going mostly meatless and buying and EV they've started meatless Mondays and Thursdays and are considering an EV for their next car. Our individual actions ripple out, and create a public normalization for these types of changes so that it isnt an uphill battle to get uninformed laypeople to care about climate policy at the polling stations

I am saying that the broad public doesn't care about these issues enough to consume differently or vote for policy or politicians that make their lives less convenient in order to fight climate change, and that instead our individual actions to avert climate change contribute to a public ethos that can accept lifestyle changes and that may potentially hold the mega polluting corporations to account and fix our throw-away durable goods culture in a way that media-demonized protests and pestering bought-and-paid politicians never can.

What I am trying to say, is that to fight climate change lifestyle changes are required. To get those changes done in a demicratic fashion, you need to convince a majority of people to actually make those changes. Part of that is making them without the actual law, to show that it is possible.

This is my point. If we try to fix climate change by improving individual carbon footprint, there are some that can do it but many that can not, so it only reduces the greenhouse gas emissions for consumers that can afford it.

You also ignore that actually living the change, is what builts up the alternatives. Lets take EVs as an example. Economies of scale bring down prices and more EVs means more reason to expand charging infrastructure. We can in fact see both of those in action. That kind of stuff also works socially. The more EVs are around, the more normal they become. It also lowers oil sales, which hurt oil companies, which makes them weaker.
Aligning you politics and your lifestyle, also makes you more effective politically. Somebody who rudes their bike in everyday life as trandport,, will call for very different things, then somebody who only drives everywhere. That can just be knowing the worst parts in the cycling network. Also again, it makes it more believable, when you lobby for something, which makes your life better.
So I will continue to try to live a life, which aligns with my values, and not pretend I gave up all my agency to Wallstreet.

No, it just requires everybody who is not living in a sustainable fashion to change their lifestyle. Prending otherwise like you do is just not helpful. People will not be able to drive a combustion engine car, fly on a jet, take diesel ship cruises, eat even close to as much beef and a lot of other things, which are going to change their lifes. Without changing that, you just can not solve the climate crisis.
People like you, who only want to lobby governments to take action, ignore that this is going to create a counter movement. That already happened a few times. Otherwise your climate idea of just lobbying works once and is very quickly reversed.
Keep in mind a society is made up of individuals. That means no society will be willing to take climate action, when the individuals in the society are not willing to do so.
The individual carbon footprint approach does not force anyone to do anything. So those that do not want to will not make changes. That is why it won’t work. It requires 100% of the worlds population to just do the right thing.
If there is not political/legal action to force change, most people will not change.
Those 100 companies are fuel producers making fuel that everyone else burns. By that metric my gas company is responsible for 100% of my gas-based greenhouse emissions. I hate how often that study gets misused.
Why wouldn’t they be responsible for the emissions from the fuel they provide? The fossil fuel industry has entrenched themselves and made it as difficult as possible to not use their products. Even to go so far as to influence how our cities are built.
I'd love to not use any fossil fuels but I can’t afford solar panels or a heat pump so I have to either burn gas or my family freezes to death. I have to get my electricity from coal because my family can’t survive without electricity.

If the providers are to blame for all emissions and the consumers are free of responsibility, then all consumption is equal. If Exxon is the responsible party, then the guy buying the gas guzzler to stick it to the libs is the same as the guy driving a hybrid, as neither is to blame for their emissions.
I understand choosing comfort over living in a cave or dying, obviously, but that doesn't mean we're free of any and all blame. Any time a new climate report comes and it's worse than the one before I understand that my existence and choice of comfort played a part in it . I don't just go "oh that Exxon, smh" and carry on guilt free.
This is what I'm trying to get across to you here. You've posted the same notion multiple times in this thread. The consumer share isn't the smallest part, it's most of it. All the oil we extract serves to make products, transport products, sell products to the consumer - you. It's not being being burnt for fun.
When you engage in consumption, any amount of it, you're pulling a string connected to a million other strings that mostly end up in an oil well one way or another. The luxury you speak of is in that consumption, not the lack of it.
And if you think otherwise, compare your lifestyle, your lifelong level of comfort to that of someone who spent their whole life living in a hut in Mali, whose lifelong emissions equal a few months worth of yours. Now try to tell that person that you're not responsible for the gas you burn, it's the fault of those that provided you with the option to do it. It's insulting.

Like I'm all for that we need to hold a fire under corporations. But we also need to change too. Just because they do like, 70% of it doesn't mean we're off the hook. We're buying those products that they pollute for. We drive the cars that are polluting. We buy the cheap clothes that they shamelessly pollute. We each have to change.
Corporations have absolutely no incentive to change, consumers need to vote with their wallets if they want something to happen. But no, everytime someone points out this blindingly obvious fact we get the "uhm actually corporations need to change, it's not my fault they're feeding off my unsustainable habits."
We have to work together, we only have power to effect change when we work together, solidarity is our strength.
If a company offers a more expensive "choice" of a greener option, rather than just being ecologically responsible by default, then you are being sold a product. That is, you get to express your superior "green" ethics by identifying with your purchase.

I am agreeing with op. Corpos and govs are the ones who have to do something. We individually and collectively also have to do something. Nothing changes for the better unless we have buy-in from individuals. The binary you're presenting is one I didn't intend with my comment. I was saying we should watch out for green washing, when functioning as a consumer.
That is, If you can avoid doing business with companies which are harming the environment then you should. The same goes for doing business with companies which are half-assed or insincere in their efforts (though these are naturally preferable).
So if you can't avoid a purchase, and there isn't a good choice, then obviously you should pick the most ecologically sound option available to you.
My main point is no one should feel virtuous for picking, like, "eco green Coca Cola" just because 5% of the proceeds go to saving the rainforest. They're a reprehensible company, so far better to just not fuck with Coke in the first place.

Did nobody here read the article? Manifesting holistic change starts at home, precisely because it creates an appetite for change over status quo. A person who puts in individual effort is far more likely to tolerate and advocate for collective effort. The idea that top down change will not impact individuals is as ridiculous as the notion that resistance to top down change isn't rooted in anxiety over individual impacts.
The issue is, the "wisdom" isn't "don't worry about personal emissions", it's "take voting extremely seriously. Become a single issue voter, that issue should be climate"
But there's a psychological thing where people take the discount today and the payment later.
Voting can buy us time and keep us a situation more conducive to making changes outside the electoral system. Protesting under a fascist regime is a good way to get a life sentence, get deported, or put on a blacklist.
Voting is literally a require to enact meaningful change in the long term. At no point has change in a western society come from a protest movement being given carte blanche to create new laws. The protest movement creates awareness, shifts the Overton window and causes people to elect a government which passes new laws.
You can say this, but you can't make it happen. What is more realistic, changing the attitudes and habits of billions of individuals quickly enough to reverse climate change, or enforcing restrictions on thousands of companies?
The thing with 99% leverage sadly has only a chance of 1% to happen while the 1% leverage thing you can just make happen. And if you make the 1% thing happen in more people the votes for the 99% thing start to go up as well. And eating less meat does have an impact. For years now i read headlines that year n had less pig meat being eaten in total than year n-1 (pork being the focus as my country afaik does not have a big beef industry so it's not as relevant to report about it)
We have very little influence on the industry as a whole but if you buy less meat, the meat industry actually becomes smaller over time. The alternative products also become more and more. Super markets over here all have a vegan shelf at least and there's more vegan only restaurants opening up in my city that even made my meat eater colleagues go there to eat from time to time.

When running errands, I combine them with using the car. For instance, I do my grocery shopping on the way back from work, and I can make use of my car's storage capabilities. This saves me precious time, since I'm on the road anyway.
When buying clothes, I don't buy the cheapest clothes availiable. Mid-price ranged clothes are more durable, and they can be worn longer and are cheaper in the long run. Also, I don't use fabric softener. Not only does it contribute to polluting the enviroment - fabric softener reduces the capability for towels to dry things (which defeats the purpose of a towel), because it hinders the fabrics' capillar effect for storing water in the fibers. Additional to that, I don't use an electric dryer. I hang my clothes to dry. This measurement extends your clothes lifetime, which is saving money.
Although I am a meat eater, I am open-minded to vegan food - in the last decade it came a long way and there are good substitutes. Some of them are trial and error though (some taste like a stack of hay smells), but the alternatives are out there. It doesn't have to taste exactly like meat. The worst thing that can happen is, that you expand the list of things you can eat.
And the most important thing of all: DON'T BUY USELESS CRAP! Sure, the cloud-based app-operated thing is appealing, but what happens, when the company that produces it goes bankrupt? The cloud service gets shut down! You have a paper weight now. I don't buy such things, because I don't want my home cluttered with stuff I don't need eventually. When I buy new stuff (mostly to replace broken stuff that I can't repair) I do research first and evaluate what features of the desired thing really benefit my needs. I rather buy expensive stuff that is more durable an has a longer lifetime over all. In the long run it turns out to be less expensive.
In my opinion it makes more sense to analyse your actions with the affect of personal economic impact in mind than to view it in the sense of reducing the impact of the climate catastrophe. Because since your neighbor isn't, you can easily feel helpless and de-motivated.

Script ausführbar machen (chmod u+x oder ug+x)
Script soft in den Pfad verlinken

Und so schaut das dann aus! Achtung: Die Tasmota API hat keine zusätzliche Sicherung durch Passwort. Wenn Du also nicht willst, dass Jede:r, der in Deinem Netzwerk ist, Deine Sachen an und ausschalten kann, solltest Du die Dinger in ein eigenes, per ACL gesichertes Subnetz einlegen. In meinem Fall kann nur mein Handy, mein Computer, und der Home Assistant auf dieses Netz zugreifen.

@techtakes I suspect steady/incremental returns mean dwindling asset value in the current business environment, typified by rapid churn and major tech transitions every decade (to say nothing of climate change and an unstable global political situation). If 10% of your investment portfolio becomes non-viable every decade (eg. no good owning coal fields any more) you have to grow fast or die. At least, that's how the investment funds see it.

Today I tagged the v4.0.0-beta.2 release purely to fix a single issue — Update(Note) federation.
It turns out that just sending the Update(Note) activity was not enough, the underlying object needed to also have the updated field set in order to Mastodon to process the update. My guess is Mastodon checks that field and only processes the note if the value is greater than the last known value.
I'd write it off as a Mastodon-ism, but it's actually better to have that property present, so now it is.
Edit — does anyone know if Mastodon handles Update(Tombstone)? I sent one and Mastodon didn't do anything, which is technically ok. NodeBB handles it like a soft delete and removes it from public view.

(A few of my novels have been sold as limited-run signed first editions. Typically for 50%-100% more than the normal hardcover price, so maybe 3-5% as much as this nonsense. Cost of goods for a leatherbound, gilt-trimmed luxury edition is maybe $5-10, plus 10% of the cover price for the author. So someone in the middle is making serious bank.)

Vor ein paar Tagen hat Abbott in Deutschland den Freestyle Libre 3 Plus freigegeben. Der Plus kann angeblich eine direkte Integration mit Pumpe und ist akkurater in den niedrigeren Werten. Zudem macht er 15 (statt 14) Tage lang mit. Außerdem soll er dünner und noch kleiner als der Libre 3 sein.
Erste Versuche stehen an sobald ich den jetzigen 3 (Normal) entfernen kann und ein paar (3 und 3 Plus) frisch einsetzen.
Meine Pandemiejahre bestanden mehr oder weniger aus Arbeit und Norse lernen. Und der Suche nach Celebrity Number Six, der elusiven sechsten Person, die das Internet in einen Detektiv-Fimmel versetzte.
Jetzt ist sie gefunden. Leticia Sardá hat schon 2009 als Model aufgehört und wusste weder von der Suche nach ihr, noch von ihrer Inklusion auf dem Vorhang. Ein weiteres Internetkapitel schließt sich. Nur schade, dass diese geilen Events in der großen TokTok Kurzlebigkeit nicht die Beine haben, die sie haben sollten.

In September 2023, I started work on a book about ActivityPub for O’Reilly Media. The book is out now for pre-release. It will be published in e-book form on September 20, 2024.

Dann wird er bei Nutzern, die die App nicht auf deutsch verwenden, standardmäßig ausgeblendet.

Hugely in favor of helping solarpunk concepts reach people across language barriers! And very interested to see solarpunk stuff from DACH. Having a community here might help ease them into the rest of the instance too
Ich habe in der Vergangenheit einige deutschsprachige Communities gegründet und gemerkt, dass man, in Summe, auf einer Nischenplattform (Lemmy/ Fediverse) in Kombination mit einem Nischenthema (in dem Fall Solarpunk) niemanden erreicht.
Deshalb bin ich dazu übergegangen, den Großteil auf Englisch zu machen, ansonsten ist es verlorene Liebesmühe.
Man kann aber, so weit ich weiß, seine Sprachpräferenzen im Profil angeben. Dann werden deutsche Posts, wenn man Englischsprechender ist, ausgeblendet und nur Deutschen angezeigt.
Würdest du hier auf der SLRPNK-Instanz eine de-community errichten wollen, quasi als deutschsprachiger Anlaufpunkt, oder z.B. auf feddit.org eine solarpunk-community als "Außenposten" im deutschsprachigen Lemmy?
(Ich gehe mal davon aus, dass du keine ganze Instanz hosten möchtest, das wirkt wie overkill)

Reichweitenmäßig macht das also nicht so viel - die Existenz bewerben müsste man so oder so. Neue communities aufzuziehen ist wohl nicht ganz trivial.

Not having children is an interesting topic I'd like to know more about. Do you have any good talks or lectures about it? I mean, we are on this planet because life propagates, it's baked into the core of every living thing. I wouldn't say we have to have kids, but it's a driving force behind a lot of stuff that we do. And it is such a journey! I know kids emit co2, but to me, telling people not to have kids feels like giving up on hope and on life itself. And I know earth is getting crowded, too. But the western world is not growing at all, other places do. So I'd say, let's make life over there better and safer, so families over there don't have to rely on children to look after them when the get old. Like Europe and the US did like a century ago.
I was able to get a vasectomy in my 20s with no children. Not everyone has a cool doctor, so results may vary. And I know that it can be a lot more difficult for cis women to get surgical birth control.
I think aiming for extinction is shortsighted and puts a lot of blame on humanity as a whole for the wrongs of colonialism.
But reducing our population, especially in countries with a larger carbon footprint (and not in developing countries as eco fascists would prefer) is a worthy goal.

My list was based on the book "How Bad Are Bananas" which goes into depth about the carbon emissions from various things, including children.
I'm not 100% sure that attributing the emissions of a child to their parents is correct 'accounting'. Maybe only their emissions until age 18? Still, all the emissions caused by that child and it's descendants would not have happened if it wasn't for the decision their parents made to create it. Accounted for this way, there is no doubt this is the most impactful decision someone in a developed country can make (that was the framing the OP used so I went with that) but it is not the most likely to happen, most practical or most moral option.
That is the problem with the whole CO2 footprint. You chosing not to fly is reducing your CO2 footprint, but airline companies will respond with ad campaigns and cries for state help and then other people will take your seat. But if you think it from a CO2 footprint perspective, you are responsible for CO2 produced by your actions. You take the decision to take that long-distance flight to Bali and that adds to your lifetime CO2 emissions. You put solar on your roof and that reduces your lifetime CO2 emissions considerably. And yes, an additional human on this planet will produce a lot of CO2 in his lifetime. And you as a couple are deciding to put him onto this planet - so from that perspective it is totally a good way to reduce your direct CO2 impact by deciding to birth another human.
Not having children doesn't solve anything. That's just an abandonment of the future. It directly harms people who need help - the elderly, those with disabilities and medical conditions, etc.
Can you explain why me not having a child would directly harm people with disabilities? I really struggle to see the logic here - even if you want to point out that we need younger generations in order to care for the elderly, there is still a record number of humans living on the planet right now and I struggle to understand what an individual child would change here

A hijacking happens when passengers overflow into the cockpit from the cabin.
Oh no! A little kid has been invited to have a look! Passenger overflow! Hijacking!
His attempt at solution isn't as cringe worthy, if one overlooks the reasoning. Separating the cabin from the pilots is a way of preventing hijacking that has been attempted, but it has problems. Notably if the pilots get acute medical emergency or indeed if the pilot steer the plane into the ground.
Some ten years ago a french pilot locked out his second and ran the plane into the ground. For increased safety the after 911 the door to the cabin could only be opened from the inside.
Also of note: the Helios Airways Flight 522 disaster. The same story played out with Mattias and the WordPress plugin, and myself with NodeBB.

To be clear, getting Mastodon to suitably process as:Article/as:Listen/as:Offer or any number of other activities is not what the ForumWG wants to accomplish. It's not up to Mastodon to adapt to the variety of content on the fediverse, but rather that its fallback handling needs to improve just enough so that its baseline rendering is acceptable to more implementors and their users.
As concise and actionable as I can make it:
Mastodon allows a subset of HTML for as:Note. This subset is good enough, but content in non-notes has all html stripped. Keep consistency here and allow the same subset of HTML.
Non-note content is truncated. This is no longer necessary due to the addition of the expand button. The wonderful thing is this standardization of behaviour actually simplifies Mastodon code.
Instead of appending the object URL to the status content, promote the "Open Original Page" button out of the overflow menu. It's more than okay to defer to the original site vis-a-vis presentation and allow the user a smooth exit if desired (target="_top" would be okay too if you're worried!)
That's it.
You could even skip the third point, but even with 1 and 2 achieved this would sufficiently raise the baseline behaviour just enough that I would immediately update NodeBB to send as:Article for new topics, and I am certain @pfefferle@mastodon.social would adjust his defaults as well.
Lastly, @renchap@oisaur.com, I'm sure I can speak for everyone at FediForum when I say that it was wonderful to see representatives from Mastodon (that of course includes @andypiper@macaw.social as well) in attendance. It means a lot to me personally that you were there, and sends a signal that Mastodon continues to desire broader inter-compatibility.

@renchap@oisaur.com it's an oft-repeated refrain that the Mastodon team has a lot of their plate. With bug fixes, existing feature pipeline, and now your funded work with fediscovery, issues important to other implementors might fall by the wayside or seem less important.
The easiest thing for us to do is to impress upon you and your colleagues the importance of this for the wider fediverse. You have @pfefferle@mastodon.social from WordPress, @mike@flipboard.social from FlipBoard, and @michael@newsmast.social from NewsMast, and likely others who would be on board (@hongminhee@fosstodon.org with Fedify/Ghost?) with switching away from as:Note (I can't speak for them, but probably?)
The second easiest thing here would be to have a developer make a PR against the Mastodon repo. I'd love to also make this happen (funding and such permitting).
Ghost already represents posts as `as:Article` objects. Interestingly, they put `as:Note` into the `as:preview` property of `as:Article` objects, which I don't think Mastodon utilizes.
That's an interesting idea using as:preview to carry an as:Note representation of the activity, abd would probably be pretty easy to integrate, I think?
To a degree, but for activities like Travel, Listen, Visit, etc, I think representing those to something resembling a Note will always be difficult, hence having an as:Note preview of the activity does make sense to me

Imagine I used a federated last.fm like application. If Mastodon converted as:Listen to a note, my followers would probably get pissed off about the "Now listening to: X" statuses every 2 minutes
i think this is on the user/client to not publish/deliver every single scrobble to all followers. mastodon should still be able to render arbitrary activities if there is a text repr of them.

In fact in the general case that's impossible; if I started using a music suggestion system based upon my friends listening habits today, I'd like to be able to use their historic listening data that they have been broadcasting to seed it.
Alternatively, consider that I decide to make my listening history public and it hits a relay. My as:Listen activities are going to absolutely carpet bomb the federated timeline.
Aside from the Annointed Two (Create, Announce) we really need to treat most activities as ephemeral and largely unimportant
This is why we need to allow people to specifically follow certain Collections which are exposed as streams. It’s also why we need to allow people to send activities to arbitrary audiences which might not include all followers.
If a relay is set up for the purpose of aggregating Listen activities and you follow it, that’s on you. You asked for it.

Ironically in a micro/blogging context, the Create is mostly not interesting, it’s just a wrapper for the inner object which is the real “post”. Although, this doesn’t have to be the case — the Create might have metadata of its own that is interesting. Or you might want to preserve the Create for the consistency guarantee that everything is a stream of specifically Activities.
@trwnh @mike @hongminhee @thisismissem @michael therein lies the point - activities mostly *aren't* interesting. Create and Announce are interesting not in and of themselves but because of what they carry.
Things just work much better in many ways if activities can be thought of as largely ephemeral.
If the podcast listen is important enough that it's worthwhile keeping around in my feed - say, it has commentary or something like that - then perhaps it's better framed as commentary, not as a pure listen

AS1 had a much more robust activity/object distinction and TBH I'm still kinda upset at how much AS2 muddled every type of object together into sludge

The end result of dividing things might be some semantic overlap between "small" Activities and "large" Objects, but that's probably not the worst possible argument
I do think there's an argument for a world with an activity-object merge but it's probably the world in which the Create activity never existed
You can do all of those things and they mean whatever the negotiated meaning is between the human author and the human audience.
From an AP machine view, Liking a Like just means that your Like SHOULD be added into the `likes` collection of that Like. From a human view, it simply means “I like that you liked this.”
@trwnh @mike @hongminhee @thisismissem @michael and I agree, but I think this approach if actually implemented really combinatorially explodes the protocol. An implication of this direction of thought is that your like has a likes collection, and that likes collection has it's own likes collection, ad infinitum.
You really can express absolutely everything in ActivityPub/AS2 and it's it's biggest flaw IMO. The combinatorial explosion really paralyses implementers

Blog software has the concept of "excerpts", which I think fits well with that idea.

@evan @Gargron I 100% agree with Julian. We are new to AP development but very excited. I was surprised by the lack of AP vocab support in Mastodon given the AP vocab has not been updated since May 2017.
Being a podcast & music app we had hoped to use the LISTEN verb. Sadly we can't as there is no support? Equally we offer blogging and event ticketing in our platform, so using ANNOUNCE, ARTICLE and BUY verbs will hopefully work???
An issue we have with redirecting the user to the original post is that it makes it very hard for the user to interact with the post. We still want to improve this (in 4.4?) but are still very short on resources. We discussed changing the "read more" button to open a modal, and (is this a good idea?) supporting an AP attribute with an iframe suitable for embedding the content, and changing the show more button to open a modal with this iframe
@renchap@oisaur.com That is a valid concern. A basic tenet of growth hacking and increasing engagement is simply to not drive the user to another site.
There's an opposing viewpoint that states that you should trust your users enough for them to return on their own, hehe.
I know there's a strong desire to keep users on-platform, which is why I suggested using target="_top" to open a new tab. I hope that's a good enough compromise, but ultimately it is up to the Mastodon team as to what works best.
This is totally not about growth hacking or engagement 🤔 Users see some content, click on it, then end up with a new UI, see a reply button, click on it, and are asked to create a new account, or to sign up (but not with their initial account). Our user testing (and many feedback) points that this is a very common issue with AP federation at the moment, even between Mastodon instances. Not many people understand what is the federation and how to work around it
I totally agree with @renchap that it is important to keep the user on the platform of his/her choice! I like the idea of having a better "read more" UX or maybe the lightbox idea.
But to have the best possible experience and to improve the engagement, you should not force the user to leave the platform.
Otherwise it feels very much like subscribing to an RSS-Feed with only excerpts, where you always have to leave the reader for reading the whole text!

Scheiße war sie, mit Batterien die nicht einmal einen Tag überlebten, komischen UX Experimenten wie bei der Sony, aber auch Lichtblicken wie der ersten Apple Watch, die im April des Jahres auf den Markt kam.
Microsoft hatte mit dem Band 2 die beste Implementation und Batterieleistung. Pebble war ganz groß, und Samsung versuchte sich am Markt.
Damals hatten wir noch eine Pioneer-Stimmung unter den Quantified Health Enthusiasten. Wir wussten, dass da was ganz Großes auf uns zukam, und dass wir ganz vorne dran sein wollten.

Sieben “Smart”-Watches
Und damit fing alles an: die Suche nach Wearable Health Tracking. Damals, am 16. September 2015, erschien in Outside Magazine mein Artikel über die aktuelle Generation in Health Tracking. Scheiße war sie, mit Batterien die nicht einmal einen Tag überlebten, komischen UX Experimenten wie bei der Sony, aber auch Lichtblicken wie der ersten Apple Watch, die im April des Jahres auf den Markt kam.
Microsoft hatte mit dem Band 2 die beste Implementation und Batterieleistung. Pebble war ganz groß, und Samsung versuchte sich am Markt.
Damals hatten wir noch eine Pioneer-Stimmung unter den Quantified Health Enthusiasten. Wir wussten, dass da was ganz Großes auf uns zukam, und dass wir ganz vorne dran sein wollten.
Und so hat das angefangen. Seit neun Jahren habe ich meine Schritte, später auch meinen Blutzucker, meine Sauerstoffsättigung, meine Herzfrequenz und -variabilität, meinen VO2Max, und tausende von anderen Datenpunkten. Und nicht nur für mich, alles das (Privacy Freaks werden jetzt einen kleinen zerebralen Insult haben) für zehntausende von Researchern, App Developern, und Enthusiasten zum Anschauen.

I don't know why you were downvoted; you are right. Plant based is the way to go, and I say this as your typical omnivorous white dude. Until we get more buy in from people (changing diets) and from corporations, it's unlikely to change, though.
Corn has very shallow roots and aggressively pulls nitrogen out of the soil. Prairie plants are much more diverse than just grasses and many have very deep root networks extending down 6+ ft. Corn fields are nothing like a prairie habitat.

My problem is that I would end up more unfitted granny-hippie than punk. Just wear shit inspired by hanfu, caftans, and elastic waist pants. Me and my muumuu don't need no tailor.
I would expect it to look a lot like fashion of the early 20th century for the working class. Clothes would naturally be baggier with greater ability to alter the clothing at certain locations to fit people wearing the clothes. The clothes would likely be made to be more durable on the understanding that undershirts and longer underwear would be worn underneath.
Since clothes would be owned and worn longer, fashion wouldn't shift as much. You would also see more second hand stores as it was common for the rich to sell or give clothes away to staff once it dropped out of fashion.

Because the first, depending on local laws, is going to be something you can't necessarily do and keep your occupancy permit and be allowed to stay living in the house.
The other is going to be a matter of figuring out your maximum power requirements and sizing a solar and battery system big enough to fill your needs.
Just as a thing to consider: you're talking tens and tens of thousands of hardware if your power bill is $300 a month, and the ROI on this is going to be 10 or 20 years, so if you're not living there that long, it's maybe not worth doing.
Do the math on how much power you use at peak draw, how much power you use in a month, and how big of a system you'd need to generate enough power, and how many batteries you'd need to store your non-solar needs (days with lower production, no production, overnight, etc.).

I did not spend $23,000 on batteries, because that would have been (and the math has tracked afterwards) more than a decade payback time, which was longer than the manufacturer specs indicated that I could expect the batteries to last.
I'm sure prices have decreased some in the last 2 years, but solar panels aren't too badly priced, but the rest of the storage stuff around it was just a bit too expensive to make any real sense unless I was somewhere doing the no-grid life, which isn't the case here.

They'll sell you A panel or pallet after pallet of every conceivable type and manufacturer and power rating. There is no sales tax in Florida on anything having to do with solar power, so that could also save you some money.
Here they have several examples of complete systems to give you an idea / crash course of what's involved.
These are examples, and as you start to learn more about the different components and choices (lead acid vs LifePo4 batteries, or home built or store bought, EV powerwall, etc etc) you'll see your prices change.

Also depending on you latitude and local climate it may be nearly impossible to go fully off grid without a huge system. Where I live we have about 6 weeks of very little to no sun (low sun combined with a lot of clouds and snow). That means all the power you need during that time needs to be collected previously and stored. This during a time it's cold af so the power usage is high (using heat pumps for warming the house, which is very efficient). This means a

This means a lot of batteries and a lot of solar panels, just to get through these 6 weeks. It could easily triple the costs or more, even if you have the room for it to begin with.
I would analyse the power usage and see where you can save money on. 300 per month seems very high. Where I live energy is much more expensive than in the US and my bill is closer to 100 per month.
Just call a company, have some panels installed for say 2500-5000 bucks depending on how much room you have on the roof and if you need upgrades to your power system. This will save you at least 50 per month on the bill. But be aware the ROI will be on the order of 10-15 years at least and more if you are unlucky.
Saving energy is free and means money in your pocket right away.
