You're not far off! Before DNS it literally was just one woman at MIT (iirc). When you put a new host on The Internet you'd email her the IP address and host name and she'd update HOSTS.TXT, and ftp it to everyone.

you should have forums for your hobby / subculture / open source thing / etc., that are not discord, and that are openly accessible in HTML online. you should try to make those appear on google and be like the place to discuss the thing, if that's at all doable.
many online subcultures used to have a politeness norm of "don't ask questions without first googling it". this rule is obsolete. googling it doesn't work anymore. stackexchange is dead. it is very difficult already to find reliable information. you need to make it as easy and inviting as possible for curious people and newcomers to get used to asking human beings about the thing. this means tolerating common questions rather than replying to them like "read the FAQ/TFM/search the forum" etc.
in fact, actively establish spaces specifically meant for people who are too intimidated to ask questions. in a reddit-type forum, do "weekly quick q&a thread—all questions welcome" kinda thing (it's less intimidating to post a brief comment than making a question post). do

@pandora_parrot exactly for that reason, there's no point trying to hide things from the LLMs. put some basic protection to prevent denial of service if you must but make your information as easily accessible for humans as possible, and ignore the chatbots. wait until GPU depreciation / capex bubble / climate catastrophe / ww3 makes the ridiculous amount of money burned on these things untenable, in the meantime focus on fostering human-to-human community.

I went to disable this crap in our Shiraki Press ad account, and got served a popup *demanding a reason why*.
Fuck Meta for this. Consent matters. We've just pulled all paid advertising from their platforms.

@xgranade It feels hard to justify yeeting Meta into the sun when running an online business, but I'm building an increasingly solid case that their supposed reach and monopoly on attention simply don't inure to the benefit of most businesses or creators any more, thus nullifying all claimed advantages. I look forward to the day when I can confidently pull the plug on their entire rotten ecosystem and know the business will remain healthy.

@josh I think the part that gets me the absolute worst—and this is true of so much modern software—is where they just change the thing out from under us after we've paid for it. It's like buying a car wash but then instead of washing the car they just rotate your tires. Nobody would be okay with that! But software does this all the gd time! 😬

google also does this. It'll hallucinate an ad for a product/service you don't sell, show it to people in a country you don't ship to, and charge you for the top spot. On by default, of course.
And if you manage to turn all that shit off you get monthly calls from "your new account manager" offering to "help" with your "ad performance".

Am Schönsten am dt. Bahnfahren find ich ja die tollen Sonnenuntergänge und diese magischen Momente, wo jemand unter allgemeinen "Bravo!"s und "Bin dabei!"s nach der zehnten Verspätungsmeldung mit solcher Inbrunst sowas wie "Wenn die 💩🤬 hier so weitergeht sperr' ich sämtliche Verkehrsminister und Bonimanager eigenhändig so lange im kaputten Zugklo ein, bis man hier wieder ohne Privatflieger von A nach B kommt" sagt, dass man die leise Hoffnung hat, es könnte wirklich wahr werden.
Ein Schulbus in Bamberg ist in Flammen aufgegangen und komplett ausgebrannt. Der Busfahrer konnte die 31 Schüler rechtzeitig aus dem Fahrzeug retten. Zur Brandursache wird nun ermittelt.
